The cash can be used to help strengthen the squad and everyone’s happy. This is how I see it going with Miles at some point. What bothers me with the Alfie speculation is that we spent £250k and have a sell on clause with Cheltenham. He’s 31 going on 32 and I don’t believe for one second that we’re going to get anywhere near a £1 million let alone £1.5 million. We’re not going to have enough to replace what he gives us and it’s not even as if the player is pressing for a move. I think Jones, if it’s him, will live to regret this sale should it happen. He’ll straight away lose a lot of credit with fans.
. You just don't know what clubs are willing to pay...
:-(
My feeling is you keep a player like May, because even if you recruit another striker who better suits the manager’s intended style of play, he’d be a demon coming off the bench at very least. Teams that get promoted have options.
I’m trying to learn how to be less optimistic.2 -

Ahadme is only 23 and was a proper handful for our defenders (low bar admittedly. Nice and physical but had decent feet too. He's good in the air and has very good feet. Played with a bit of a swagger to him. A kind of arrogance. Sounds familiar right?!
I don't expect him to be the second coming of Yann but I do think he's a really good player and will give us a new dimension.
Ask yourselves - look at the team during that "run" under Appleton and then ask yourself how many of those payers are likely to feature next season?
Look how much has changed behind the scenes in that time too
And look how we performed once Nathan turned up. NOT referring to the performances but the results - and that was using square pegs in round holes.
So hopefully Nathan does actually have a clue what he's doing - moreso than all us experts on here - and let's just see how we get on with HIS assembled team as opposed to a load of guys bereft of confidence when he took over.
Whilst I always try to see the positives I am excited for the season. I don't expect us to go unbeaten but I expect us to be a LOT harder to beat this season, and just a lot harder in general.
If all the rumoured signings get sorted we will be quite intimidating for once.50 -

We should be keeping them and building on it.
Fair enough replacing not good enough goalkeepers, central defenders and injury prone players or players simply not good enough.
May apparently has Huddersfield and other suitors...according to whatsapp messages shared earlier.
We should be keeping him. And adding. Not getting rid of him, having to replace him AND add to that also.
That is all. Whoever Alfie joins, I'm happy to have a charity Upbeats bet ends up above Charlton this season and that Alfie scores more than our top goalscorer. This potential sale makes no sense.
If as @DubaiCAFC says we don't need the money, then why are we doing it....?!
Alfie might well do that, but all I clear about is promotion!Jones has said, May won’t be a starter week in week out, and May said okay I’ll explore my options.. if we don’t get the right deal for Charlton he will stay.. nothing to do, with selling him to raise funds!
Nathan Jones is our manager. He has my support but this one makes no sense to me0 -

100%. Since my little girl walked out with him as mascot towards the end of last season and he chatted all the way out of the tunnel and onto the pitch with her, then stopped and posed for a photo after the game she has decided he is her best friend.
Her previous infatuation was CBT as he answered a question she asked in a lock down meet the player thing, she cried for a week every day on the way to school when he left.
I may just not tell her and hope she thinks Berry is May!8 -
Grapevine49 said:0SouthLincsAddick said:DubaiCAFC said:I would be surprised if we see Alfie in a charlton shirt again unfortunately.. Seems to be Huddersfield number 1 target..
Social media has just lambasted the club for delivering the worst season in memory.
Would you like me to repeat that?
This is after 3 seasons of fractious muddled mediocrity, post just about surviving fiscal mayhem, not to mention the clutches of the judiciary, a 9 month trading embargo all following the removal of any vestige of ownership of the clubs’ former freehold assets.
Which bit did you miss?
The club needed a total rebuild in 2020, in 2021, in 2022 and in 2023. It needs one now. Any rebuild risks casualties. Have you looked at the totality of this squad? The issues are I suggest a great deal bigger than 1, 2 or 3 players.
I liked Dobson, saw Blackett-Taylors’ maverick production as random at best while May is precisely what you see on the tin. You are entitled to acclaim who you like but what are we talking about here? Dobson failed at Sunderland, CBT was signed off the street, while £250k acquired May.
I respect their efforts & talents yet not a shred of even passing Championship interest?
At this juncture having given a new manager a long term contract to rebuild the club I am inclined to let him do his job. As with any boss, do I expect to agree with even half of the decisions? No, After 40yrs in business why would I change the habits of a life time?
I share Jones coaching & management values. No, they will not suit everyone but if you are not true to your values you will fail. I will judge him by the nature of the squad he constructs over the coming days & weeks and the performances/ results over the season.
Would I prefer it to include Mr May? Until I have more clarity in terms of the direction of travel, yes. Do I understand from a palpably weak squad perspective why you might blow it all up and start again. I do.I am not sure on what planet anyone would suggest launching a promotion campaign on the back of Aneke (no material contribution in 2yrs), Leaburn (unlikely to contribute pre October 2024 after 10 months out of the game), Kanu (22 league starts). With Casey and Mbick it is a question of 2 reclamation and 3 development projects
This is not of Jones creation. It is a position he inherited.
May I therefore politely suggest in promotion terms there is a rather desperate need of not one but two significant additions to the attacking options. On the basis of upgrading the quality of the squad by acquiring players who can instantly contribute it suggests such additions will be most palpably be coming to compete with Mr May for the shirt.
Doesn’t mean May won’t win the shirt but better players means more competition for places and I’d expect any Manager to be open and honest with any player about the way forward.
If I repeat IF there is the option of a 3rd quality addition which will allow May to pursue other opportunities then it seems only fair to explore them. Doesn’t mean it will happen, doesn’t mean it won’t.
Is it a risk? Of course it is. That is the nature of management. The real issue here is how do you expect anyone to prove themselves unless you empower and support them in their endeavours.
The world will always be full of naysayers endlessly lobbing contentious bricks of abuse from the sidelines. That’s OK.
The sidelines is precisely where they belong.
I was hoping @grapevine49 would post the voice of reason.
Any chance we can stop the endless posts, basically saying what many others have already said but in a different order, regardless of which side of the fence you sit on?6 -

Standing on the terrace all those years ago with his radio up against his ear. Hearing that Nelson had just gone and sold his leading Goalscorer for 333,000.pounds.
Derek Hales at the time was the 5th highest transfer between English clubs. Off the top of my head. We of course had a replacement for him Mike Flanagan.
Bet Les and Chris are talking about this now.
Sorry for going off subject.1 -

If Alfie goes, and Jones gets it wrong like he did at Southampton and Stoke we won't have Alfie to save us like he did this year. Selling Alfie - Ridiculous.8

Surely we’d get more spondoolies using his goals to get us promoted to the next level?

A question would be would you take Ahadme and Reid from Stevenage for example as your two strikers next season and sell May have some profit and two younger players . Maybe that’s what they’re thinking behind the scenes.

Would question if Reid was a flash in the pan. Obviously a lot of players on that list of top scorers won't be available for various reasons , but Barnsley did release Devante Cole.0
