In what way is his all round game far better than May’s? (genuinely asking, I don’t know much about him).

May plays like a lone wolf so maybe Godden is better to play with in a pair and probably better helping the youngsters in Leaburn & Kanu. Could really improve the forward  play with his experience and nous so maybe that overall is better. Be interesting to watch this next season

He’s definitely looks bigger than May and scores headers. But it’s who else we strengthen around him with the money which will count .

Godden doesn't fit the profile of striker Jones wants (allegedly) @DubaiCAFC ?   Care to explain?

Issue is, agent of May was making other clubs aware that May wasn't happy at Charlton for whatever reason.. May doesn't like Jones style, and wanted to leave.. Jones couldn't and wouldn't guarantee he would be week in week out start. Charlton are getting a good deal, May is getting an even better deal, just feels like it is a good deal for all.

Godden in my opinion is a good replacement for May, similar type of player and done the goods at a higher-level and is happy to fight for his place. 

As Ben said in his baking cake statement, let's see where we are at the end of the window.. You have to remember, every single club is battling for players, some will come and some won't that is football for you.. But for me, the profile of players we have signed so far is what we need to be doing, they are a good age, points to prove.   

From what I was told from a trustworthy source, May was fine to stay and see out his contract at a minimum, and it was Jones decision for him to leave. 

The thing I think Jones would prefer in Godden over May is that Godden is more of a "professional" inasmuch as May was something of a late bloomer. Godden is more likely to be the type to play in a system and do a job for the team where May could be seen as more maverick and less disciplined, which to Jones is probably something of an issue.

I'm not saying that I necessarily agree with this logic and arguably May's nature is what makes him effective - plus you have questions of pace/fitness/age etc with Godden. But I would say that the Godden signing seems to fit with Jones' MO - whether that ends up working or not.

Plus we still need one more striker and did even before May goes.

Playing devils advocate here, May had a 1 year option so technically 2 years left on his deal.

Interesting.  Where did you stand with Dobson in Jan? Should we have sold him before he ran out his contract and we got nothing? 
What about Leaburn and Small now? By your logic, they are no brainers to sell I imagine.

I think it’ll work well with Godden. 

Alfie has the chance at 31 to get one more big contract and fair play to him for doing that and setting up his family - remember how late he came into the pro game from non league and even playing at Hythe in the Kent League !
Godden will be a great signing but dont compare with Alfie-  they are different players - if we get a 15 and a 10 goal scoring strike partnership thats alfies goals covered - more goals from midfield this year plus more Clean sheets then its all positve all over the pitch. 

Last year Alfies goals kept us up because our defence was leaky - Mitchell and a new keeper and better wing backs in Ramsey and Small will solve that as well as no Hector or Thomas as they had an error every game. 

What if Alfie was with us this season and picked up a 6 mnth injury in Sept - then we would have been stuck as reliant on one player again - this was NJ is sharing out the responsibility as a team and not just through one channel. 

Personally dont see it as a bad thing,  and with NJ i trust him to know how to get a TEAM promoted and not individuals. 

It was clear that Davies wasn't happening after a little bit to be honest. After it went deathly quiet and we were told he was considering other options I reckon Jones would have soured on him anyway. He's said he only wants players who want to play for Charlton and Davies obviously wasn't too bothered about coming down. He's done quite well to leverage our interest into a new contract at a team who have just been relegated from the Premier League, he'll get more money than we would offer just to sit on his arse and good luck to him. We've obviously been aiming high with our keepers so far, Ruddy has gone to a PL team, so at the moment we're suffering the struggle you can get with experienced keepers where they're great for keeping the ball out of your net in the Football League but they're also very popular with higher level teams who would never actually have them as their keeper but will happily pay them tens of thousands a week just to warm up the number 1 in training. The good thing is we moved quickly to get in a keeper that isn't AMB or Isted so we can afford to take our time getting in an experienced player who wants to go onto a football pitch to do something other than hand the actual keeper his water bottle at half time. Will be interesting to see who we target if and when the free player options we rate disappear.

Let’s be honest here, we were absolutely shit last season so what do we do let our 3 best players go.

From what I have seen so far not signed anyone who looks like he will tear up the division.

Seems madness but this is Charlton.
