The women missed out on qualification due to the nation's league. England's result effectively would have allowed a Great Britain team to compete if it was positive, but we are going through a bit of a lull. I have watched 4 bouts. In each one the person I thought had won lost. Of course it must mean I am not knowledgeable enough, I appreciate that, but it takes away any fun I get from watching it.3

I think the rugby shows that even if you can work out a way of qualifying based on England's performances, there's still going to be a problem putting together a UK team once every 4 years when people play every other competition as the 4 individual nations. They've responded to the issue by switching to playing sevens in the top international competitions as GB (I think it's actually GB not UK, for once?) so that the squad gets more used to each other and long term perhaps there's more chance of winning stuff.MuttleyCAFC said:

I believe the reason is that it was found that referees were having to stop bouts for head injuries more often due to head injuries caused by concussion when wearing head guards. There is a cumulative effect which doesn't happen so much when not having that perceived protection. There has been a similar thing in cricket - prior to helmets, batsmen used to get hit far less because they used to watch the ball more and duck or sway out of the way. Now the inclination is to take the ball on and not worry about the consequences because of the protection the helmet affords them.HarryLime said:

And I suppose we can look back at Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale in terms of players who could have pushed us over that line. Also, we could have done with Andy Robertson in the recent Euros IMO. I think most people from all home nations would prefer to see us winning trophies.Swindon_Addick said:

But would the other home nations want to lose their teams, for the tiny number of their players who would end up part of the GB/UK team? This summer I can't think of a single Welsh or N Ireland player who would have made a combined UK squad at the Euros, never mind the first 11.MuttleyCAFC said:

Rugby is different, in that the home nations are more closely matched, as shown by the Lions teams.0 -
