I think there used to be a warning for a false start and if you did it again you would be out. It seems unfair to have this system of one false start and you're out.

It's a deterrent as they mess up scheduling and it's applied to all equally. Watching the athletics, why are out people dressed like Kiwis? Some of the other GB kits have appeared dark blue but the athletes are kitted out in all black. I wonder if it’s some kind of homage to the new UK passports.2

I saw it all and I'm still none the wiser. The commentators seemed to think she chose a longer route to go faster and failed. Not just because Emma Wilson missed out, but I've never liked that sort of final race.
Logically you either have a pure knockout system where you have separate individual knockout races to reach a winner takes all final, e.g. in athletics, tennis, boxing etc, or you have a "league table" where the total score over every round sorts out the medal places, e.g. in diving or gymnastics.
Having all her previous wins giving her no benefit feels wrong. And in a sport where knowing the current weather conditions is critical, it's almost certainly more beneficial to be able to race again before the final, even if you exert more energy.4 - Sponsored links:

I think skipping straight to the final is pretty beneficial. Two less races means being a lot fresher. She had a good 10-15 races prior to that and won most so I don't think the weather is a factor.
