This is so CL. We lost to Bristol: relegation battle. We beat Birmingham: their strikers are shit.8

Godden is going fineWheresmeticket said:
It's one game. We still don't have much of a goalscoring threat. Time for him to laugh will be when we get promoted.cafc_se7 said:
NJ will be laughing at the doubters. When he is nullified he is nowhere to be seen!NabySarr said:Just realised Alfie May wasn’t playing second half, had as many touches as he did in the first

Still trying to make sense of it, When was the last time a visiting team at the Valley created less?3

Matty Godden actually has the second best goals per minute ratio out of anyone who has scored 3 goals or more…….Wheresmeticket said:

Sure @seth plum was delighted to see a Josh Edward’s long throw goal2

NJ has taken lots of stick recently, and rightly so. He admitted last week he got it wrong and held his hands up.
Today he needs praise and congratulations on getting the players right, the formation right, and the tactics right!
This was by far and away the best performance of the season....to a man! Coventry was everywhere, Godden is a natural striker, Ramsey was superb. Jones won everything in the air, Doc was, finally, how I expected him to be and Mannion was a safe pair of hands.
NJ got the subs right as well, at the right time and TC, ripped them apart when he came on.
Not one player had a bad or indifferent game, it was just astounding how they were compared to the last 3 games.
If we can build on this....then perhaps, just perhaps we can move upwards out of this poxy league.
Crowd was excellent as well, and playing like we did today will bring more and more people back!
Well done all!

12m? Stansfield was more than that on his own.Rothko said:they spent £12m on the three strikers who played today, all garbage, so excellent deflection by Davies10 -
Wow. Great performance, we completely nullified Birmingham. Thought it was a decent game too, a high tempo and far less hoofing.
Interesting formation, 442 but very narrow, so more like 4222 swamping the centre of the park. And weirdly both full backs, who were excellent , got forward more than when they've played as wingbacks.
Birmingham may have had ridiculously expensive strikers for this division, but got zero service all game. Subbing May at HT was a massive call by their manager, but Stansfield was no more effective.
Our goal was exactly like a few weeks conceded last season, a long throw into the box allowed to bounce. Great poaching by Godden, who is starting to become the May replacement I hoped he would be. Not as mobile, but 3 good poachers goals.8 -

I'm really glad we won. But to pretend we have a reliable strike force is delusional.4

Very frustrating performance in that it’s come after the worst of the season. How can that be the same group of players? How come we couldn’t pass the ball against Bristol. Making mistake everywhere and yet today barely a foot wrong? That was a promotion-winning performance, not a mid-table side.4

We don’t have a settled strike force yet. But Godden is starting to get going and Leaburn is hopefully not far behind.Wheresmeticket said:I'm really glad we won. But to pretend we have a reliable strike force is delusional.5 -

Bloody brilliant!!1

Because the way NJ has us setup we want teams to come at us and try to pass through us. That way our solid defence can frustrate them and we can break them down with our press and exploiting space on the turnover. Where we currently struggle is if an opponent is more organized and more direct giving us more of the ball and we struggle to create chances in those games.Solidgone said:Not more to add on to what others have said other than why is it we can only put in a solid performances against good footballing teams?9 -

Well done lads. Players have rightly been criticised the last few games but it was an excellent performance in terms of skill, work rate and game management. Our pressing was very impressive. Jones deserves massive credit for the way he set us up.4

A great game, which Charlton probably should have won be a couple more, a good ref, and wasn’t it lovely to see the valley really rocking. Birmingham fans I thought were very quiet, but perhaps they expected a walkover.5

Amazing performance, no smash and grab and always looked in control. Surprised TC came on for Godden but what a performance! Hes not a striker but the kid is gonna be a player.7

Mainly because we passed the ball more, it gives them more time to get forward and more chances to get on the ball, regardless of whether they’re FBs or WBs. Both have the fitness to get up and down the pitch too.killerandflash said:Wow. Great performance, we completely nullified Birmingham. Diamonds are just boxes for wankers. I'm glad we've moved away from the 3 at the back. I've never been a fan of 3 defender formations and with the solidity we have in Mitchell and Jones and the recovery pace we have in Ramsay I don't really see the need for the extra defender. None of the CBs are moving into midfield and we're wasting the extra man. There was too much pressure on the wingbacks to create AND facilitate clean sheets and it just wasn't happening. Having two deep midfielders and two advanced was much better and we can still have two strikers on. We asked Docherty to do his usual thing of getting about and causing trouble, Anderson to provide energy and ACampbell to show why he's always played a level above.I hope we keep the new shape, you could tell Jones wanted to move to it last season but was so scarred by the atrocious diamond showing we saw briefly last season he backed off hard. We were asking too much of players in unusual roles and this box might just suit them better, we'll see. Either way, we've not really been troubled by a team that cost tens of millions to put together and we made Alfie May look like Tresor Kandol. Lovely stuff12

On holiday and couldn’t watch. Checked score regularly and was so pleased to see the win. I’d resigned myself to a loss. Having read all your positive comments I’m even happier. That’s now the standard this season should be judged. Anything less isn’t good enough. We have proved this group can actually do it. Consistency at a good level will get us top six. Currently in the bar and celebrating the win COYR4

Good point. It's usually the home team 🙂MuttleyCAFC said:Still trying to make sense of it, When was the last time a visiting team at the Valley created less?4 -
Told you we would win.
So much better with 4 midfielders & strikers who know where the goal is. They all scrapped & harried but my MOTM goes to Ramsey.
More later
