It wasn’t even Cray Wanderers, it was Cray Valley Paper Mills - the second best Cray team!crookester said:Didn't see any of it but the important thing is we won and our strikers scoring should give them confidence for a run of winnable games. A cliche but this was a real banana skin - this time last year we couldn't beat Cray Wanderers, a team way below Southend in the pyramid, at home!

Three in two. Two headers against Chelsea U21s and another against Southend.se9addick said:Glad to be in the next round but we made very hard work of it. It was a lovely header from Leaburn (didn’t appreciate how good it was at the time given the view of the opposite end of the pitch isn’t amazing from the away end). That’s two goals in two games so hopefully he’s getting some momentum now.

Not sure if this sarcasm or not, but it genuinely is progress. Not sure if it’s enough progress, but it is progress and I think, while frustration about how this season is going is understandable, some of the negativity is getting a bit excessive now.oohaahmortimer said:

Nathans chat after reminded me of the great Lennie Lawrence who once said something along the lines of 'you can kiss them, hug them, shout at them but if they don't want to play for you on a Saturday then theres nothing you can do'.
Its a worry as many have said on here about how come the basics simply aren't being achieved?
Is this all down to NJ and the coaches? or, is it that he now knows full well that theres simply not enough quality or reliability in the team...Docherty, ACampbell, Gillespie, Edun, Watson, Hylton, Potts, Chucks, Edmunds-Green and Anderson who is not ready and needs a loan. That for starters is nearly a whole side.
To me its a clear sign following several NJ match interviews to the owners that you can't get out of this league without spending some serious money so the next window will be interesting.
We can't keep getting rid of Managers, we need to build but one transfer window is not enough to judge NJ just yet.

As the in laws are Southend fans I’ve seen them play 4 or times last season. They don’t feel like a non league club, and a few of there players (Scott Morris, Ralph and Husin) could be easily play a few leagues above. I honestly thought they were marginally the better team but we looked more clinical in front of goal. Leaburn and Mannion played well. Penalty looked fair too to be honest5

Daft penalty decision? That’s silly, stonewall!Major said:
Funny really, reading the usual suspects criticisms on here today of pretty much everything and everyone involved with CAFC, you'd never see them describe two superb deliveries and headers, an out of this world reaction save by Mannion, a really daft penalty call and two ridiculous deflections. You certainly would not know about a sublime shielding, half turn and strike from yet another allegedly useless player, which won us the game.
Nowt queer as folk.1 -
Look at the Isthmian League Premier table. CVPM definitely the best team in Cray.se9addick said:

You can't have "too much" negativity can you? especially after safely progressing through to the next round of the cup and when no one has self combusted yet. Load of big old dogs cock as someone said.0

It's our fifth league 1 season in a row. We are mid table whilst playing some of the worst football known to man - the negativity is fully justified.Exiled_Addick said:

If there is a god, he made it abundantly clear he despises Charlton 😂14

Because if you stick your arm out behind you, you stand a fair chance of blocking the cross. It’s definitely intentional handball. Nobody needs to stick an arm out backwards like that; he’s not using it like that to keep his balance.PragueAddick said:
Well I agree he’s got good vision, but he’s literally got his back to the ball, how did he know to put that arm up?Ben18 said:Just watched the highlights, I thought the penalty decision was fine.
Taylor throws his arm up behind him, and in a very unnatural position as it blocks the ball.1 -
Can I say we won because we were miles better?3

"DEFINITELY intentional handball"? You know what he was thinking at the time? Have a guess what I'm thinking now.jimmymelrose said:

Anyway, "intentional" doesnt come into the equation these days.4 -
At first, I thought the penalty decision was a joke, but having watched it a few more times on replay I think the referee got it right.Off_it said:

We weren’t though. We had more quality in front of goal, but we were outplayed and outworked for long periods of the game.AddicksAddict said:Can I say we won because we were miles better?

I guess also that you’re thinking about having lunch, and I reckon that it’s an intention too.1 -
It's one of those. Some go for you - like last week - and some go against you. Personally when a ball is walloped at a player from a couple of yards away like that i think it's a lottery. The fact he was off balance means it looks worse when the ball hits an arm because the impact can move the arm further from the body, so exaggerates things.AddicksAddict said:

Is that an "unnatural position" for the arm to be in? Yes, if you just see the still picture. No if you watch the video, as he's clearly off balance. His arms (and legs) arent in a natural position for someone standing at a bus stop, but are perfectly natural for a footballer trying to stay on his feet whilst trying to block a shot at the same time.
Anyone who thinks he flung his arms out with the intention of blocking the ball has either never played football in their lives or is after a rise, in my view.5 -

Who else left after Southend's third thinking at least we'd secured a replay? Bloke called in to LBC last night saying he did. Think the co-commentator on BBC radio at the time also said our end was noticably emptier just before extra time.1

He called in to tell people he didn't understand that there are no replays in this year's FA Cup, from R1 onwards?swords_alive said:Who else left after Southend's third thinking at least we'd secured a replay? @Off_it
I played hundreds of matches as a defender, both in junior and Sunday League adult football and never would I have put my arm in that position even if unbalanced. If you’re unbalanced you don’t put your arm behind you. If you’re falling forwards then you put your arms forwards to break your fall forwards. If you’re falling backwards then you wouldn’t put back your arms behind you. You're more likely to swing them about or put them sideways. Try it with a mattress behind you if you want.
What he did was to try to block the ball. I didn’t need a still picture to come to my conclusion. I thought so first time watching the video. Had I been at the match in that crap away end I might have been unsighted somewhat and biased but with the video it’s an absolute definite penalty.
Besides, I never try to get a rise or do wind ups. It’s just not me.6 -
I played for 25 years and now referee occasionally. As a player I would have known I handballed it, and as a referee I would have given a penalty.Off_it said:

It all hinges on “body movement” and if you think that the position of his arm was natural to his movement. Ultimately that’s a judgement call by the ref. I’ve watched it multiple times and it’s a penalty all day long.- touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

Let's put some clarity on this shall we. Unbeaten in 6 games which includes.......letthegoodtimesroll said:It was a classic banana skin game. We won. Our three fit strikers scored and, as a bonus, so did Zach. 9 goals in 8 days, so unlike Charlton in recent years, even with Alfie.. The unbeaten run in all competitions extended to 6 games and counting and hopefully one game closer to Jones coming back from injury. Onwards and upwards.
3 draws
1 win against an U21 side
1 win against a non-league side.
Sorry if I'm not doing cartwheels.13
