So classically Charlton. A master class in Charltoness. As predictable as a Charlton thingy.

Class is a bit OTT, but I thought he was adequate. His forward passing is still cack, but his pressing, closing and tackling combined are better than our other options. Anderson the only other player that comes close. Though his passing is awful.AdTheAddicK said:

If he's available in January worth a cheeky bid? Might save us from the drop?ateamofcorygibbs said:I mean Jesus Christ7 -
Can’t see what Kaminski offers, Bree gone backwards, Leaburn out of his depth,Berry offers nothing.JRC best player tonight, we seriously need some new blood5

Been saying for ages to play the players in the right positions. We dont have a full compliment of wing backs so play the wingers as fucking wingers.
We should have won but we didnt. Utterly dejected.
Change the system NJ!! Owners will need to cough up again.

I genuinely thought we'd win that game, and then it kicked off and Pompey were an utter shower of shite, who let us walk into their box at will, and then I was convinced we'd win the game. Even with Luke Berry starting, who would not be starting for most L1 teams, let's be honest. But the attacks fizzle out... The shots hit legs, or are tame and straight at the keeper... The crosses go over heads... The minutes tick by and then we concede.
Don't know what to say, really. We have never been a potent attacking force under NJ but we've kept a lot of clean sheets, which made up for it. We are not doing much of anything at the moment.9 -
Never been in more disbelief coming out of a game. If we were even vaguely competent going forward it was a 2-0 game and while drawing would have felt like a relief, it would also have been a wasted opportunity, so to lose is genuinely unacceptable.Tonight all comes down to recruitment. Don’t sign a single championship goal scorer in order to prioritise the defence, then concede at the near post from a corner leaving us a mountain to climb. Have only just seen a replay of the second goal and it’s 10x worse than it looked from where I was sat. He’s literally taken a touch away from goal, has 4 or 5 players in front of him, and is still able to place it in the bottom corner. Zero excuses for any of them.
Aside from the recruitment, Jones has to take a good chunk of the blame tonight. Subs were stripped off and ready well after we went behind, but next thing you know the bibs are
back on and they’re warming up again. Just unbelievable naivety when you know that a team 1-0 up will waste around 50% of the time remaining. Fucking fuming and if we don’t make very high quality additions in
January we are done for.6 -
aso914 said:Two defensive errors that led to goals that should be rightfully criticized but there is a severe lack of goals in this team and we will go down if it’s not addressed. I don’t think it’s as simple as having the right players back from injury to play in Jones preferred system he needs to take a good look at the creative players we have and actually play to their strengths. We have a great defense but it’s not perfect they will make mistakes. Putting the pressure on them to attempt to keep clean sheets every match on the hope we can nick it is very unrealistic at this level.Overall, we played better than against Norwich but are still impotent in the final third. JRC looked comfortable - good passing. Kelman is wasted - he needs good supply. As the Pompey radio commentary noted Shaughnessy scores goals at the near post - he did it when they clinched promotion to Champ - we should have known that as soon as he came on!Agree with aso914, NJ system should adapt to realise the team strengths - by now he should know what works. On paper this team should perform better.

Moments like the last second goal drag me straight back to 2019. Hard not to feel a bit flat.
The inner Mr Motivator insists the next few months will be fun and thrilling. The realist in me would prefer not to reacquaint myself with the blood pressure monitor!4 -
I can understand why he wasn’t being played as we don’t have proper cover on the left to allow him to play wingback but with how poor Bree has been we could really use his crossing abilities. I also think it was a waste of money to buy him if we’re not going to play to his strengths. He is a winger.DamoNorthStand said:aso914 said:On a more positive note I thought JRC was brilliant and for the first time I’m genuinely questioning Jones decision making when it comes to player selection this season. How he hasn’t gotten a proper run out in this team is absurd.
Apter is another one who I think we have mis managed.6 -
Pompey were there for the taking utter shit , they have a load of injuries too and there was I thinking we're the only team that gets injuries .
I felt positive with our attacking options . I'm not as convinced as everyone else to as how good we are at defending , there isn't the nous and wiseness in game play anywhere in our team.
So much powder puffery and gettin excited about someone who can run around a lot or close down , half them look like they have deep sea diving boots on when it comes to the final third when real craft and ingenuity is required.
That result could mentally lift Pompey , as for us lot we look like we'll need a miracle to win another game this season .
Scum is another 4-0 awaiting .
The ref was right to play more added time with our time celebrating and Pompey wasting time there was fuck all of those 5 mins the ball was in play .
This is a team that is clueless, the manager is throwing darts at the wall hoping something will stick , it happened last year when Thierry Small clicked in but last year we were playing dross , this season we are the dross of the division and we've just got to hope we can finish above 3 others . I'm not convinced, which doesn't mean I'm chucking the towel in or crying it means i think we are shit and are more likely to go down than stay up currently , loads of games to go but being realistic it's gonna need a miracle to stay up .
Will the owners dig deep or do they think we've dug deep enough and signed enough dross already, they'll have to roll the dice or it's more than likely league one .

Somehow we picked defeat from the jaws of a point. Two terrible pieces of defending from us led to both their goals. I was convinced the ref would blow as soon as pompey restarted the game but we switched off. Jones and Macca both going for the same header,3 of our players surround their man but no one puts their fucking foot through the ball and he somehow squeezes a shot between them all? Its all a bit gutting. Im still sitting here in disbelief that we managed to lose that game. Jones was too slow with the subs tonight i must say and JRC should be the 1st name on the teamsheet after that performance. NJ will be absolutely fuming no doubt. We'll beat them back at our place, the injustice of tonight should drive our players on,not make them retreat into their shells.5

So is TC but it hasn’t stopped Nathan Jones playing him as a wingback or centre forward.aso914 said:

We need someone with a bit of pace and can create something out of nothing.
Criminal we let Small go, think he’s exactly what we’re missing right now.10 -
23 Games played and Nathan Jones has probably had enough time to work out what is good and what isn't. Firstly, trying to play Miles like his father is a complete non-starter, he has always played off the lead striker and he is no threat in the role that he is being asked to play, how many chances tonight a big fat zero, same all season. Without a left sided wing back with pace we can't possibly let Gillisphey start without that pace in front of him, although he didn't start tonight, it limits us, we need to look at Gillisphey's position and decide if it's time we upgraded. We need to look at Lloyd Jones's position, we lose him with ten games to go, then we are struggling. We need Ramsay, Edwards and Godden back, I'm not hopeful regarding the latter. The two short contract players need to leave, if they haven't already. The majority of these players are, at best, lower championship level, some are young enough to improve, some won't. The board are looking for further investment and they need to, I think this squad, fully fit, will get over the line but we got an indication tonight of the level and quality of player we need, Rankin Costello showed more nous than most on the pitch, he's comfortable at this level, a lot of his team mates are not.3

Was Sonny Carey jumping away from their winning shot? I'm not saying he could have got a foot on it, but it looked like he was actively trying to jump out of the way.1
-
Never mind the journey and being the best version of ourselves. It would help if we did the basics.3
-
Gillesphey with his usual couldn't give a shit look after the goal. plays like he doesn't, think he's just grateful to be getting paid to play at this level.1

PWR
As if I wasn't pissed off enough I spent fifteen minutes writing a long post on another thread and then when I clicked on 'Post Comment' it got lost because the thread had been closed.
So I'm going to write it again:
I'm writing my comments as if the match stopped at about 90 minutes at 1-0. Portsmouth are absolutely the worst team I've seen this season in this division. They are worse than Norwich (who I watched on TV) and they are worse than Sheff Weds (who I saw at The Valley). They are worse than us too.
Portsmouth could hardly put a good passing move together until a nice interchange around our box at about 85-86 minute mark. Prior to that they looked scrappy and blasted every chance they got high and wide.
Meanwhile we looked decent for the first twenty minutes. We played the ball around nicely and looked to be building up to something. This is because we have better players than them, I really mean it. They haven't got the quality of Bell, the guile and speed of TC, and I believe Jones to be a better defender than any of theirs. Rankin-Costello also looked like a brand new signing from Planet -well maybe not Planet Heaven - but Planet 'wow, where did he come from' - or let's just call it 'Planet Nice One.' I was pleased but also annoyed because we needed to push the boat out - to go and prove that we're better than them. We play no-risk football and as in life generally if you don't take any risks you don't get anywhere. If we'd done so, I don't believe Portsmouth would have taken advantage of any gaps we'd have left further back because I don't think thay have anything dangerous enough to threaten our still decent defense.
Another shout out here: Kelman is absolute quality but our staid, defense first, careful approach ends up in a hoofball and he is wasted, absolutely wasted in this team. It's an absolute travesty. Leaburn did well today but it's no way to play football. With a different approach Kelman would be a 20 goal a season striker.
The game goes on - and on - and on. In fact watching Charlton is like waiting a thousand years and hoping the a meteor hits between a chosen set of goalposts on a chosen planet. We play the most boring crap, we really do. If we were playing Coventry City (or in a few weeks Chelsea) then I could accept it but - and it goes on - more and more of the same stuff - repeating what never works - and then doing the same again - asking decent players to play beneath themselves. They are not allowed to be the best version of themselves, quite the opposite. We have the players to have won this game. And still the same crap goes on.
Then we wait until the 86th minute to inject some more energy with the subs. Why leave it so late? What do we do in their position, winning 1-0 with only 5 minutes to go? We fall down, waste time, take the ball to the edges of the pitch, ask the goalie to pretend he's hurt his head. So why would we expect them to do any differently? Why wait so late to take a bigger risk to get something from the game?
Watching Charlton at the moment is like watching a dear friend or a pet animal scambling to get out of a hole and they can't hear you shouting 'there's a rope ladder on the other side. You can get out easily if you use that.' But the friend or pet continues to scramble blindly, trying to grab the rocks and tree roots, and keeps falling back down into the hole.
Nethertheless I'm not going to call for anyone's head or slag any particular player off like many do on forums, or worse, at the ground. I may not like it but I've said it time and time again: 'if it keeps us in the division then so be it. I'm willing to put up with this s**t if it keeps us up'. We are in the real thick of the battle now and we need to stick together however hard it may be. The management, players and fans are one team together, and even when it doesn't look like it, they are giving 100% and are doing what they believe to be best. We may not agree with certain aspects but we have to get behind them.
Just take a breath, calm down, and move onto the next match. If we lose that, do the same again. Just continue to create a healthy atmosphere for the team and pray (in a non-literal sense) that they find their way to turn it around. If you really can't control yourself to assure doing that then don't go to the match. Go to the cinema, do the gardening or something else instead. The last thing we need to add to the woes of this team is idiots making a negative atmosphere. As I said I'm PWR yet but I bet people are doing this already on here. Just, for pity's sake, don't do it at our matches or it will be like removing the rope ladder that they still have a chance of finding.24 -
We really should have won that. Absolutely gutted about the winner.Bell surviving 90 mins and looking class was a bonus, as was JRC’s debut. No one looked terrible.Onwards and upwards.9

The subs and late subs are concerning lately0

I know NJ was happy that we were ahead of the overall plan when we went up but if we go back down then we will seriously be set back by several years in my opinion as I personally can’t sit through another season of league one football & I’m sure I’m not alone. We need to throw the kitchen sink at staying up otherwise this club will be leaking a lot more money than the owners possibly might not want to keep stumping up if we go down. Relegation will literally define the long term future of our club I’m hoping that the owners realise we are now fighting for the future of the club & spend accordingly. We aren’t sunk yet but tossing away a hard earned point is something that just can’t happen. I thought injury time goals that we regularly used to concede was in the past as we were too professional now. Maybe not. I can’t think of many situations where other teams would have done the same after equalising so late so that’s a real worry.2
-
I'm a big fan of NJ and still have faith. But this is what I find really baffling. He loves TC and has not looked for a TC backup or improvement in any transfer windows. He relies on us having decent wing backs and we are so sparse in that area. I can't wrap my head around it, and agree we need to be playing a system that suits the players he has asked our owners to buy/keep.king addick said:Been saying for ages to play the players in the right positions. Not a brilliant performance but we were better that the shite team that beat us thanks to our often inconsistent goalkeeping .
i don’t think we should be calling for jones to be sacked already thats Bollocks and I don’t think we will be relegated we need to get a grip and get our confidence back.
it’s highly unlikely on present form, but it would not shock me if we won our next home game 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍❤️❤️2 -
This is what is bothering me most about this eve. Yes, this was a much improved performance compared to Boxing Day, but that was a really poor Portsmouth side that we've struggled to break down and then inevitably lost to.Chunes said:I genuinely thought we'd win that game, and then it kicked off and Pompey were an utter shower of shite, who let us walk into their box at will, and then I was convinced we'd win the game. This is the first time this season that I've genuinely thought we could be in trouble.3
