We're at 7 points from 12 since the Millwall performance - not terrible for a relegation-fighting team. We're also 7 points from the relegation spots and have shown real fight Vs Stoke and QPR.
I thought a few things went against us today early in the game and it was enough to rock us.
1. The ref simply wouldn't allow any contact between players which goes against our playing style.
2. Kiminski gifting Pompey a goal
3. A terrible decision by the ref to award a penalty
It's disappointing we couldn't recover but that's life in the Championship. Those whining and moaning about where we are in the table would be happier if we were 4th in League One. We're a new championship team - these results will happen.
For what's it worth, I thought the Portsmouth players were a credit to their badge tonight. Fought really hard and deserved the win.
We were shite tonight and NJ is clueless when things go wrong.
Do you think we should be comfortably mid table?
NJ is not a long term solution, in my view.

A little bit of perspective. 7 points from 12. 3 of those points were against 10 men & against a side I am reliably informed are so bad that they wont win another match. Then we had 3 home games where we won 1, drew 1 & lost 1, scoring 2 goals & letting in 3.cafcnick1992 said:The first few pages of these threads are always angry posts with little longer term perspective.

A huge opportunity missed against a makeshift and very limited Pompey side but credit to them - they played exactly how we should have.
We struggle enormously to win against teams with 11 men who press us. Our approach play on a bad day is absolutely dreadful and ineffective (and this was one of those days).
Our clean sheet record is in spite of Kaminski, not because of him. It does our excellent defence a disservice that he takes the lions share of the praise for that record - he has let us down far more times than he has gained us points this season. He has had two shockers against Pompey.
We’re right back in the dog fight now and face Soton and WBA away before Wrexham. Our return of 4 points from the 3 home games is damaging, and less than most hoped and expected.
A lot of work to do, and a really bad night. Said it since the start of the season…we will do very well to stay up.0 -

NJ is not a long term solution, in my view. Its too early to tell... This season was all about survival and nothing else2019/20 he did that with Luton, 2020/21 he got them 12th, 2021/22 he got them 6th (lost in the Play-Offs), 2022/23 he left the club in November but left them in 10th, and sowed the seeds for their promotion that season.Does that sort of trajectory sound so awful?6 -
I haven’t had the will to listen to any post match from NJ but he’s not really trying to deflect blame again is he? Just accept facts - tonight we didn’t turn up when we really needed to .4

That’s such Lehman tho isn’t it. How many times in the first half did they win the second ball (taught) and did they switch it immediately into acres of space (taught) and expose the man over (taught). And just for clarity that’s taught with 14 players injured.ForeverAddickted said:bobmunro said:

That has been obvious all season. I also expect that our manager can deploy tactics that have half a chance of working when we go behind in a game.
It’s not for any fan to determine where we end up in this league, but the manager seems incapable when things go wrong.
If we stay up this season, that does not mean that NJ should remain, in my view.
The owners need to work out how we remain and thrive in this league, or we will end up back in L1 in front of 11,000 fans.
These are not realistic aims. We are fighting with clubs with budgets far bigger than ours.
I maintain that being 7 points clear of the relegation zone at this stage of the season is an honourable achievement from Nathan Jones.

It’s not just NJ - the recruitment has also been poor.
I still think that since Luton, he has fallen out with clubs, players and fans - it may end well, but if i were a betting man, it is more likely to end in tears.
I just don’t see us evolving under NJ.7 -
The performance was even worse and more worrying than the result, which is saying something given we really needed to be avoiding defeat and instead got hammered.
So much space in front of the defence, not sure what happened with Coady tonight. Obviously an awful error from Kaminski but he's not wrong to be annoyed at the player carrying the ball unchallenged through half the pitch, and that happened multiple times.
Lack of bottle in the team going a goal down is a big concern. Didn't look like there was any fight out there, lost all the battles and second to everthing. Also seemed completely afraid of making a mistake - even in acres of space every player wanted to head it (often into danger) rather than taking it down and playing.
We don't play through the thirds so if we don't get it to the WBs we are lost in hit and hope territory.

I just don’t see us evolving under NJ.Recruitment I'm still on the fence over; Chapple came in too late a year ago to have a proper effect on the Summer Window, he joined in May, and given the comments from the likes of Swisdom, we were already making signings.January is a horrible window and one I never like. Can argue as well that Southampton / Stoke were horrible times to be a Manager at those clubs, one was always doomed in the Premier League, the other hadn't long come down from the Premier League, with neither having the patience to wait for the sort of seasonal results that Jones had produced at Luton... We're a different proposition to those two, a much similar case to when he took over at Luton, and has already brought us success. But hey... Lets consider replacing the Manager the moment things start going against us, it worked for the five years between Bowyer / Jones didnt it.9 -
Portsmouth don’t have a far bigger budget than us but in two showings this season they have a much better midfield, even with 14 out injured tonight. I really hope we can finish above them but them doing the double over us doesn’t bode well.cafcnick1992 said:

I maintain that being 7 points clear of the relegation zone at this stage of the season is an honourable achievement from Nathan Jones. They're into their second season of adjusting to the Championship, surely they should be doing better than us, as at least they've already got the foundations in place for acting as a Championship club? - If we're in the same position at Portsmouth this time next year, rather than looking to be where the likes of QPR /Stoke are currently, then I'd be concerned, as would feel that we're simply going to keep treading water at this level, and our return to League One will simply be inevitable. The one aspect I dont like, when budgets get brought up is the fact that some of our best players over the last few years (Ramsay, Small, Carey etc.) cost us very little in terms of Transfer fees... Yes money had to be spent elsewhere to bring them in, but if we're smart enough with the scouting, we shouldn't necessarily need to spend big.5 -
To be fair they scored 2 from 30 yards, one penalty and had a cross go across the face of goal but I don't remember many other chances. Lots of possession but not much danger with itFortune 82nd Minute said:

They could have had 2 more in the 2nd half. Ramsay pushed their guy in the back * Bell hand balled onem1 -
Just in.
I really expeced our attacking play to progress from the sledgehammer approach to something a little more sophisticated as the season progressed, but it really hasn't.
We were outplayed all over the pitch tonight.
Feeling down but certainly not out. Plenty of points still to play for.0 -
I think I just want this season to get over the line now. Finish it up and start fresh next year.10

Sometimes you have to give credit Pompey counteracted our system .. 1st and 3rd both was caused by them playing in the hole between our mid and defence .. most of the game it looked like Doc against 5 Pompey players …. Tactically they got it spot on and we did not make right decisions to get back in the game .. another goal and last 10 mins would have been interestingcarly burn said:
That happens nearly every week. Not sure if it's a vast difference in class or a coaching unit that don't have the knowhow to address it?The Prince-e-Paul said:Forget 2nd ball knock-down, they seemed to be getting the first header on almost every punt (way too many) up the pitch and when the ball was on the ground, they were showing for the ball better and always seemed to be between our man and the ball.
I wouldn't say that Portsmouth were great, despite the scoreline, but they were efficient. We on the other hand were wasteful in possession and went to type of lump ball which they handle sooooo easily.
Our goal showed that Portsmouth had a soft underbelly but we didn't do much to expose it.
No plan B tonight.
N. Jones and the team = D minus tonight.2 -
Objectively poor tonight. Who knows what happens if Clarke scores in the first minute but after that we were nowhere near them. They ran us ragged in midfield, seemed to have overloads everywhere and we barely laid a glove on them until about 60 minutes. The bookings meant we couldn’t continue to be aggressive; the ref got a lot wrong but we didn’t help ourselves. The two up top didn’t work, but it wasn’t much better in the second half. If we do insist on going long we have to get runners off the ball or people around for seconds and knockdowns. We looked so disjointed and really lack creativity. It’s fine when it works but hard to stomach on nights like this.Fair play to Pompey, they played some really nice stuff at times. They were in second gear for an hour, but definitely looked a bit shaky when we finally managed to put them under some form of pressure. Frustrating that the difference in the game is two goals from a combined 55 yards, one a worldie and the other a goalkeeping error. In reality though we didn’t deserve anything from that.5

We're set up to keep a clean sheet. We're not built for chasing a game so when it goes wrong like it has a few times this season, it goes really wrong.
Tonight was bad, but Clarke should have been one nil up in the first minute and maybe it would've been a different game. We need to take our chances when we get them as we don't make many. Thought we played well vs QPR and Stoke but again we didn't take our chances when on top. Need a reaction at the weekend. Southampton away is still a place we can grab a point or 3 but we need to be on it,unlike tonight0
