How Many points for Championship Survival? and How do we get them?

draw against preston and beat sheff weds.
roll over against Ipswich and Hull and hope millwall implode.1 -
9 is the largest number of points in the past 5 matches by any of the teams below us. So even 9 is a very generous assumption for how many might be scored by at least two of Oxford, Leicester and Portsmouth. A couple of points from our last 5 and they'd need more than 9 just to catch us.MuttleyCAFC said:If you are going to be as generous as you can be, you are looking at 9 points from that lot. Wins against Leicester, Stoke and Birmingham. So being as generous as Father Christmas we only need two points. Realistically they are not going to win all three.0 -
Today leaves the picture looking like this with four games left
Charlton 49 -12
Blackburn 48 -12
WBA 46 -14
Pompey 45 -16 (game in hand is Ipswich (H) in 3 days)
—
Oxford 44 -13
Leicester 41 -10
Leicester: Portsmouth (A), Hull (H), Millwall (H), Blackburn (A)
Oxford: Derby (A), Wrexham (H), Sheff Wed (H), Millwall (A)
Portsmouth: Ipswich (H), Leicester (H), Coventry (A), Stoke (A), Birmingham (H)
WBA: Preston (A), Watford (H), Ipswich (H), Sheff Wed (A)
Blackburn: Southampton (A), Coventry (H), Sheff Utd (A), Leicester (H)
Charlton: Sheff Wed (A), Ipswich (H), Hull (H), Swansea (A)1 -
Highly unlikely that Leicester catch us at this point, being eight behind with only four left to play though they do still play Portsmouth and Blackburn away from home.
Us, West Brom and Oxford all still have Sheff Wed to play.1 -
Have to beat wednesday as don't see us getting a point out of the other 3....need to get off the beach asap4
-
Yep need to win vs Wednesday, which we won't as that's too easy. We need one more win to be certain3
-
If Derby beat Oxford next Saturday and we beat Sheff Wed it’s pretty much a done deal, we’d be eight clear again with three to play.
It’s not as comfortable as we would like but I’d much rather be us with points on the board than any of the other teams below us.6 -
Lose to Weds next week & we’re in the 💩5
-
Even a draw might not be good enough, and could lead to a very nervous last game. Too many teams below us in reasonable form, for 50 to be guaranteed safety.guinnessaddick said:Lose to Weds next week & we’re in the 💩2 -
I don't trust Oxford to not pick up points so if Pompey lose to Ipswich then a draw against Leicester would be great.... Assuming of course we get something at Chef Wed....

It's fine, we'll just beat Ipswich because this team is insane8
-
It’s felt inevitable to me that this goes to the wire. Surely no one expects us to beat Sheff Weds?1
-
Think 50 will be the number. Before we kick off next Saturday, Blackburn have to play twice, Southampton away & Coventry at home on Friday night. Two very difficult fixtures. Possibly we could be ahead of Blackburn with two games in hand by Saturday morning.
Both Oxford away to Derby & Leicester away to Pompey play at 12:30. I am going to be positive and say we will be effectively safe by 5PM after winning at Sheffield Wednesday.Still very confident we will stay up with a couple to spare.13 -
Wouldn’t it be 3 games to play and we would be 8 points clear of Oxford? So still not safe.SouthWest_Addicks said:Think 50 will be the number. Before we kick off next Saturday, Blackburn have to play twice, Southampton away & Coventry at home on Friday night. No one should feel comfortable or should panic till after this gameLeftfootforward said:It’s felt inevitable to me that this goes to the wire. Surely no one expects us to beat Sheff Weds?2 -
My bad. You are correct.NomadicAddick said:

Yes, the R number is currently 8 so that won't be resolved in one round of gamesSouthWest_Addicks said:

Sheff Weds have taken points off the opposition in nearly 1 in 4 games, they are not the pushovers most think .. added motivation for them to get out of minus points0
-
I've never thought we were safe, BUT I was confident we'd get the necessary points to reach safety, without relying on the teams below us all being terrible. Which I'm expecting to be 52.
After the last 2 home games I'm less confident in our ability to get those 3 points. Next Saturday will be a real pressure game for us, whereas Wednesday have nothing to fear. And we'll have to take the game to them as well, which isn't our strength.5 -

People are acting like we’re the worse side in the division saying how awful dreadful we are etc etc after what no wins in 5 yet Sheffield Wednesday with no wins in 37 are what a motivation non pushover side?Leftfootforward said:Sheff Weds have taken points off the opposition in nearly 1 in 4 games, they are not the pushovers most think .. added motivation for them to get out of minus points5 -
Brace yourself as next week we can expect to see a sheffield wednesday playing sublime football that would beat any team. Reckon we could be lucky to keep the score down to 2 or 3 and will be glad of the final whistle.Crispywood said:

By the time we play Sheff Wed at 3pm next Saturday:
- Blackburn will have played twice (Tues night and Fri night)
- Portsmouth will have played twice (Tues night and Sat lunch time)
- Oxford and Leicester will have played on Sat lunch time (Pompey & Leicester play each other)
Worst case scenario at 3pm Saturday is:
Blackburn 44/54
Portsmouth 43/51
Charlton 42/49
Oxford 43/47
-
WBA 42/46
Leicester 43/41
And best case scenario (if you say Leicester beat Portsmouth):
Charlton 42/49
Blackburn 44/48
WBA 42/46
Portsmouth 43/45
-
Oxford 43/44
Leicester 43/445 -
Looking at that i think we still need 1 more win but i also think 2 draws will probably be enough. 51 points should see us safe.Callumcafc said:Today leaves the picture looking like this with four games left

Leicester: Portsmouth (A), Hull (H), Millwall (H), Blackburn (A)

Portsmouth: Ipswich (H), Leicester (H), Coventry (A), Stoke (A), Birmingham (H)

Blackburn: Southampton (A), Coventry (H), Sheff Utd (A), Leicester (H)
Charlton: Sheff Wed (A), Ipswich (H), Hull (H), Swansea (A)
If we take the two sides to worry about:
Leicester might not win another game, never mind winning 3 of their last 4.
Oxford i think will definitely beat Sheff Weds and might win 1 other game. That would take them to 50 points.0 -
1 more win = 52 points and would see us safe.
Problem is where is that win going to come from. Charlton being Charlton it will be by beating Ipswich,......not by beating SW.8 -
I can see both Oxford and Pompey picking up 7 more points putting them on 51 & 52 points - a draw next week takes us to 50..0
-
Oxford realistically have to win 1 of their next 2 games and they are both against sides chasing a play off spot, so it's not going to be easy for them.Leftfootforward said:I can see both Oxford and Pompey picking up 7 more points putting them on 51 & 52 points - a draw next week takes us to 50..

Lose to Wednesday and we will be relegated. We will deserve it too2
-
We’ll just about stay up I think/hope. Blackburn and Oxford have some tough fixtures.2

That stat makes them sound absolutely awful to be fair!Leftfootforward said:Sheff Weds have taken points off the opposition in nearly 1 in 4 games, they are not the pushovers most think .. added motivation for them to get out of minus points0
