Charge to use Blackwall Tunnel

Born and raised in Deptford, lived there for 25 years, lived in West Croydon for 14 years. Both abject, utter shitholes. Never mugged, only know of 2 people who were. Know more people who've been mugged in Bolton, for fucks sake 🤣SuedeAdidas said:

I wish there was a single simplified system to cover it all, ULEZ, congestion, and river crossings. As well as the totally incomprehensible nationwide car parking systems, and for any fines.
If there were such a system I would scrape together something like £50 credit to avoid stress when interacting with those systems.
In the face of all this nerd generated malarkey I wish we could get back to simple and straightforward cash.
Sadiq Khant has done a good job as Mayor, he has been elected three times. I live around the corner from the late Ella Adoo Kissi Debra hard by the South Circular, and the death of the poor girl has led to cleaner air round my way thanks to the action of Khan and his team.
Vladimir Putin keeps getting elected too.
But are you genuinely suggesting Khan has rigged elections in the same way Putin has?
Probably says more about the apathy of voters, that he is still in power and also a slur on the other political parties for not running credible alternatives against him at election time.
In my experience it's safer - I was robbed on the street 5 times between 2006 and 2012 and I've never felt as unsafe since I moved back in 2017
Public transport is better. The SL4, Elizabeth line and night tube make life much easier.
Cycling infrastructure is amazing and I can pretty much get anywhere I need to without cycling alongside cars.
Could be others as well but I generally don't have much to complain about. It's an amazing city to live in.
It’s mad how it works out. I’m 56, have lived in London all my life and only personally know one person who has ever been mugged.2 -
Not the main topic of conversation I realise, but my son was mugged (age 12) on Shooters Hill, returning home from school and I was mugged (I say mugged, the bloke pulled a machete) for my Vespa on Holloway Road...it's only my wife who's got away with it all so far in our house...1

Across Charlton, Lee and Kidbrooke. I imagine I was pretty unlucky but I do feel like SE London generally has got safer over the past 10 years or so.SuedeAdidas said:

Silvertown Tunnel cuts delays in first year, says TfL
TfL's 12-month monitoring report said journey times had fallen significantly around the Blackwall Tunnel, with northbound journeys between Sun in the Sands and the tunnel being, on average, 58% quicker during the morning peak and 47% quicker in the evening peak compared with 2024/25.
The report also found:
Morning peak journeys on the route were 126% faster, while southbound journeys between Bow Roundabout and the Blackwall Tunnel were 70% faster
There was a 2% decrease in weekday northbound traffic on the A12
A 23% reduction in over-height vehicle incidents at the Blackwall Tunnel since the new tunnel's opening - before the Silvertown link opened, the Blackwall Tunnel saw 700 closures a year which were often caused by stuck HGVs
Journey times at the Rotherhithe Tunnel had increased, with weekday traffic rising by 3%, but attributed this to issues in key operating systems.
Demand for the Woolwich Ferry also stands above pre-Silvertown Tunnel levels, with operations also affected by technical problems
Average nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) concentrations in the area had fallen by 17% compared with the year prior to the tunnel opening, but this had also been declining over the past five years
Traffic across both east London river crossings has remained below pre-tunnel levels, with no increase in weekday cross-river journeys despite the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel
TfL said more than 11% of all tunnel trips were now made by bus, a 290% increase on levels before the tunnel opened, with more than 10,000 journeys crossing the Thames each day on routes 108, 129 and SL4.

So does that summarise as fewer using it than before it opened and traffic up at Rotherhite and the Ferry BUT those that are using it are enjoying much faster journeys?
I guess that was expected / logical.0 -
They conveniently leave off the fact that the numbers using the two tunnels have, in my estimation anyway, reduced. As others have said, they could have just introduced the toll without spending millions on the Silvertown tunnel and ended up with the same 'improvements', but they're never going to admit to that.2

The cost of driving through the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels will increase from Monday 21 September, Transport for London (TfL) says.
Peak charges for cars and small vans travelling northbound between 06:00-10:00 and southbound between 16:00-19:00 on weekdays will rise by 5% from £4 to £4.20. Off-peak charges will increase by 5p to £1.55.
Heavy goods vehicles will see charges increase by 5% each way to £5.25 (off-peak) and £10.50 at peak times. Charges are payable seven days a week for journeys made between 06:00 and 22:00.

I know longer live in london but I think one of the reasons london may be safer in terms of muggings etc is the evolution of technology. People don't really carry cash as much these days and phones are better protected than before.2

It's going up 20pence to help balance the flow of traffic 🤣clive said:The cost of driving through the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels will increase from Monday 21 September, Transport for London (TfL) says.

Funny how they express the increase to the peak time charge by a % (5) but the off peak by a monetary value (5p).clive said:The cost of driving through the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels will increase from Monday 21 September, Transport for London (TfL) says.

The cynic in me suggests they think some people will just see the numbers being the same & think no more about it. But we all know that a 5% increase to the off-peak charge is 7.5p.....not 5p.
So, we are shafted YET AGAIN.1 -
I understand why the charge was introduced and I'm fine with the peak/off-peak and Northbound/Southbound differences.
Don't understand the need for the price increase so soon after introduction. Give it a full year at least right?1 -

No. TFL need all the help they can to help fund your ‘grossly underpaid’ Tube drivers 😉😀😆cantersaddick said:I understand why the charge was introduced and I'm fine with the peak/off-peak and Northbound/Southbound differences.

But to be serious it’s simply because they can without any negative impact to income streams. Those that have adapted to paying for this route likely won’t change habits with this level of absolute monetary change. It doesn’t push people beyond a limit - yet. That’s my guess on their financial modelling.4 -
But their books are relatively healthy (operating surplus despite debt for infrastucture investment). I guess my point is why now? I always expected annual rises and adjustments but either start of the financial year like with public transport or annually from its start date. Just finding it a little odd timing if nothing else.valleynick66 said:

Maybe the ‘real time’ finances and forecasts aren’t as healthy as the ‘backward looking’ ones and it just creates a bit of a buffer.cantersaddick said:

I set up a TFL London Road User auto pay yesterday, payable by direct debit (for the Blackwall Tunnel).
I think it said you get a monthly statement, is that correct, do you get a notification etc?
Sorry to be lazy, but was trying to log in for nearly 24 hours and it was telling me my password was wrong (it wasn't).0 -
The TFL system is deliberately designed to be difficult to use. Almost impossible to reset a password and a need to remember a 2000 digit user reference. I am sire it is so they can collect more fines.
On e it is set up on a vehicle or vehicles its very easy you just pay a fortune every month and they send you an email with an attachment that tells you how much they have made you overdrawn by. Sometimes this even arrives in your main email rather than junk mail.2 -

Maybe think of it like parking. You used to be able to park almost anywhere on the "public highway". That would be absurd now and journeys would take forever if drivers had to negotiate cars parked along major A roads and town centres. So it's not free anymore!

For me this is huge. Beyond the obvious healthier children is a clear and obvious societal good. There are just so many benefits.
This is tens of thousands of GP appointments available for other needs with knock on effects on wait times and access to GP. Its thousands of referral and treatment slots in the NHS which are available for others and waiting lists for treatments reducing.
Its millions fewer sick days taken from school and work across their lifetime leading to a more productive and healthy workforce.
Its whole liferimes of NHS support avoided.
These sort of public health interventions really are huge wins for every part of society.6 -
They do..they show you when you have been charged, then when they have taken the payment at the end of the month. Possibly on separate statements, depending on timing within the month.Covered End said:I set up a TFL London Road User auto pay yesterday, payable by direct debit (for the Blackwall Tunnel).

Your password was probably correct, but if you ise the app I doesn't work. I found this out when I tried to add my new car in the app. Eventually got through to someone on the phone who told me not to use the app but to log in on the website (which worked).Covered End said:I set up a TFL London Road User auto pay yesterday, payable by direct debit (for the Blackwall Tunnel).

For me, personally, it's the strong Millwall link in their union leadership over the years. I just could never get past that.Leroy Ambrose said:
