Docherty wasn’t good enough. Great bloke but that’s the long and short of it.
Well he is better than Ouma, playdd more than JRC last season so clearly NJ thought he was better and has more experience that Mwamba ?
Completely disregarding the fact Jones said he wanted to play more expansive football which JRC is obviously better at than Doc. Ouma has played one game albeit he was awful but it’s not like doc never dropped a horror performance and are you going to seriously complain about a young talented academy player having a pathway to the first team?

Keeping Doc would have been completely sentimental, we would have done no better having him in the squad from the opening 6 games than without him.

We play Doc we dint lose 4-0 to stoke, agree I may have egg on my face about Ouma come end of the season but I doubt it. Can ypu point out the expansive football JRC has been playing ? Ibcertainly havent seen it. Read my previous post I literally said I dont have a problem with him bringing Mwamba through at expense of Doc

I'd probably point to JRC's brilliant pass to set up the winner against Derby and his run and pass ahead of TC's equaliser against West Brom. He's been heavily involved in a third of the goals we've scored this season. Last season we lost 5-1 with Doc in the team against Southampton, 5-0 down after 43 minutes and went 3-0 down away at Stoke within 34 minutes the next game. Let's not pretend Doc was some magical shield against the team having collapses, we've always got one in us.
  • Message to Linda if you are reading this forum……did someone volley your cat?

If they are family then sadly it just reflects poorly on Doc. NJ and everyone at the club have been hugely complementary about him as a footballer and as a person in all of the club statements and press.

If there has been a falling out then Jones has not let it affect the tone of the farewell messages, and offering best wishes to a good pro.

Sure it might hurt to be told you aren't at the level, or able to be a fixture in this side going forward... but that's football. Own it and go and prove him wrong elsewhere.
If someone treated a loved one of yours like trash behind the scenes and then was nice about them publicly, ypu would just be happy to swallow false platitudes?
It depends what actually happened and why they fell out. Jones is a bit of an oddball but it seems very unlikely that he just one day woke up and decided to pick a fight with Docherty out of nowhere.
Maybe Greg was actually treated a bit harsher than was fair but there's definitely more to it than NJ randomly antagonising his own captain on a whim.
NJ is a my way or the highway person, some would say thats decisiveness others insecurity, we were going through a bad patch when doc was dropped. If others have tried suggesting trying a different style of playing and Jones reacted negatively "it wouldnt suprise me"
It’s funny, NJ is by far our most successful manager for years. He’s a long way from perfect but I get the impression a certain small minority of fans can’t bring themselves to like him, even if he won the PL for Charlton it wouldn’t be enough. I’m sure Appleton is lovely bloke who’s extremely fair to everyone but where did that get us.
  • Club wishing Doc happy 30th birthday today on socials - ouch.

    And move over Linda Apter:

Thats got to be a parody account? - Given the "Linda" - "Please tell me how he thought you could do it without you given he won one game last season when you were not in the squad" - Erm... We've won four games this season where he wasn't in the squad.
    Don’t think it’s a parody - his mum/wife/sister I’d guess from the profile pic.

He's put the Christmas tree up early.

First and foremost I care about the club, as said being ruthless can be a good trait but when its purely for ego as I suspect in Doc decision, I am sorry but I cant back it. Perhaps I will be proven wrong i just suspect as usual I am right.

Losing 2 nil is better than 4. There is something called goal difference, its pretty important you should read about.

To be fair, Jones is not a very likeable person, so understand why he rubs some fans up the wrong way. I don’t think it’s necessary to appreciate what he has done of the club and also not like some of his traits as a human.

Is that a real post or a continuation of the Charlton based 'Linda' banter?
Tried to find Linda Docherty on X ... couldn't find the one quoted so guessing it is a continuation of the Linda joke ...
    It’s from Facebook not twitter…
Ok..sorry.  Found on Facebook - definitely her - but not that post.  The picture used is from 2022 and she doesn't appear to have posted anything since 2024.  Think I need to get a life!
You could check the players of all 92 clubs and see how many have mother's called Linda.
Please report back to us when you have the relevant information.
The main European leagues could be handy too.
This sort of information could influence who we might be signing in January. 👍

Can I help Captain Robbo 😀
Linda Gomez, wife of Gus and Mother of our Joe.
Joe won't be coming back in January 2027 but will be coming home for the start of the 27/28 season on a free.
Wages won't be the issue as Joe has made his millions over the last 11 years.

Unfortunately because Joe would've been at Liverpool for 12 years when he leaves Liverpool on a free the deal struck by CAFC back in 2015 when we had a sizable sell on percentage never came to fruition.

The good news is Joe will get the parking space nearest to the medical room at Sparrows lane.

Gomez used to glide over the ground back in the day but the myriad of injuries stopped an immensely talented footballer playing 75 odd games for England alongside John Stones which I predicted when they were both teenagers.

Rado, this is a very dangerous thing to say on a Football forum as we have folk on CL who will monitor every word you input.

You seem to want to portray yourself as a guy ITK. No harm done but just expect opprobrium when you get things wrong which will happen if it hasn't already 🤔

I'm sure one day I will get something wrong as I have only been on Charlton Life for 12 years 😀

If you are ITK with how pro football operates you must understand footballers being happy is a ephemeral experience unless they are the lucky few free from injury or being discarded and on mega Premier wages where their children won't even need to work !

Greg Docherty had a fine two years at CAFC and despite any shortcomings he was as fit as a fiddle and I genuinely think it was time to move on unless he was prepared just to be a squad player; it doesn't matter what I or you believe, Nathan Jones is the manager and it was his call.

Football is a ruthless business and seeing young guys released from clubs in their teens after sometimes being coached at a club from the very young age of 6 is more heart breaking than an experienced 30 year old like Docherty who really should find a club with his fitness and CV either in Scotland or League 1 level.

He will have to be realistic about wages.

Yes Ouma can improve but right now he's not an improvement on what we had.

Hmmmm have Docherty have instead of JRC and lose 2-0 to Stoke instead of 4-0.

Or have JRC instead of Doc but have 3 more points this season from his contribution to the goals at West Brom  and Derby which Doc never would have made tough choice

In hindsight you could have Doc over Ouma but sometimes you need to make that gamble to try and progress. But we’ve played 7 games this season and we’ve not lost/drawn from a winning position which is essentially when Doc is at his best, he would have influenced 0 outcomes this season right now it doesn’t look like a mistake.

30 years old now next deal can probably be his last chance to make money, or a chance to try and extend his career as long as possible. He’s probably going to properly weigh up his options rather than nose dive into one
  • I am very surprised he hasn't landed anywhere yet as a free agent? Decent and experienced L1 player. Good solid player and a good example to youngsters. Must be some clubs out there who can afford his wages....maybe Peterborough who are struggling again?

It's supply and demand. If you have many suitors at championship level then no problem with a wage commensurate with that level.
If a player drops down to league 1 level unless it's a Wrexham etc the wages will be less.

No idea the situation with Docherty but he may be settled down South and his agent is trying to get a club in a certain radius of where he lives ?

Walker and Vardy at Burnley are on a relatively low wage compared to the multi millions they have earned in their illustrated careers Because they just want to continue to play football. Doch won't be in the same financial position but will still have to accept market forces.
Just like a house sale !

It's crazy how centre midfield wasn't the first thing prioirtised this season. We brought in Chalobah who will rarely play, Skipp as a late replacement once Chalobah inevitably got injured and Ouma who has previous for going awol.
