Defensively we just sat off them. They didn't have to play incisive balls, just pass it. We were so passive defensively, giving them a couple of yards of space, and to be fair that is an area we would normally class as a strength.

I expected Cardiff to look good after listening to Rich Cawley and Louis Mendez’s podcast. They’re better than their results before today suggest.

What I was hoping for was a better defensive performance from us.

Cardiff could have scored plenty more but Okonkwo kept us in it and they must feel some of their finishing could have been better despite scoring 3.

We didn’t create loads but we had some good chances and TC aside didn’t take them. Can see why Cardiff haven’t been winning games, they’re creative going forward and keep possession well but were less convincing defensively.

We had a good start to the season but with our budget we were always likely to have another tough season. I was never convinced by the argument that when you add wages in we’d have spent as much as in summer last year.

We need Jones to figure out our best side, RW and AM have been our weaker areas all season, and the CM balance doesn’t feel right with Coventry and Skipp being similar players, even though it’s our best pairing on paper.
We’re going relying on our academy and some help in the January window again.

Surprised Grant stayed on, he has moments that show that Championship quality but it feels like we’re trying to fit him into the team in roles he’s not completely suited to.

Was also surprised to see Ouma come on when the three other midfielders on the bench are more natural attacking midfielders who can all pop up with a goal. Maybe Jones thought he’d offer more defensively to help us get back into the game, but we’ve not seen that from him so far.

Very fortunate we hung on to TC (for now), a huge improvement in his finishing after 3 goals last season to become the player we want our chances to fall to. He’s our best hope of staying up or reaching the dizzying heights of lower mid table mediocrity.

The fact that NJ isn't accepting accountability is worrying. The confidence of the players looks spent.
He pretty much opened the interview with “I take full responsibility because I prepared the team” did he not?
Yeah but despite that... Is he accepting any other responsibility?
He also said he's responsible for the closing of the Hormuz Strait.

You bought the players, picked the team (and the subs) and chose the tactics.

    All on you old boy.
I do worry about a Footballers mentality at times with this approach
I get it.. It is largely on the Manager
But at the same time, I worry if a Footballer is able to take a shit without the Manager giving instructions under the door - Manager picks the team, but given the experience of the majority of the squad, they all should have the common sense to be able to adapt to situations as, and when they happen.
It often disgusts me how easy a Footballer gets off the hook over a bad performance in the modern game
Its too easy / lazy (not aimed at you Golfie) to point at the Manager and go: "Buck stops with you"

PWR (Pouring wine rashly) I know it’s early days but the team doesn’t look to fit together quite right. There are gaps everywhere and Cardiff found us easy to play against (as did Stoke). Jones is good at getting teams set up well. I’m hoping it will take shape soon.

Last week NJ said we had a net spend of +1.5 mil this summer.

    It bloody shows.
    Therein lies the problem.
If everyone could get a team full of cheap quality players and be successful they would do it, there is a reason sides speculate,, not saying we should put the club in jeopardy but as I said earlier you get what you pay for, the best player on the pitch was league 1 last season, our league 1 punts didn’t come close to him, maybe Sonny for goals, we obviously didn’t pick the right ones😂

Just what has Knibbs done to not even get a look in...spends almost the entire game warming up.  Carey has had a few poor games but at least he offers some threat and normally tries to drive us forward.  Both Alli and Ouma looked awful today and even Grant was misplacing passes.  Leaburn works hard but is too isolated.  Someting has got to change...
Calling for our least effective player so far this season to come back in...
How my minutes has he played this season  ?
    Zero is the answer .

    That’s certainly least affective
    I'm referring to Carey.

Only thing that disappoints me from that interview, is that Campbell doesn't get mentioned with Okonkwo / Leaburn.
I thought he was pressing well at the start of the game, his pace was causing Ng problems, and took his goal really well, he then got shifted to the Right (might have gotten their Full-Back booked), and did well tracking back. Second half he's back on the Left (so the Full-Back he's up against again doesn't have the threat of dealing with Campbell, whilst on a booking... Campbell was also hamstrung by going back to Left Wing-Back again, and yeah maybe could have put in a better cross for Grant / Leaburn early in the second half, probably the one thing he did wrong.
I mean I even "get" the decision to move Campbell to Left Wing-Back, Bindon had a poor first half (regardless of the assist), we clearly wanted an extra body in Midfield (hence why we went to Wing-Backs), and you never play Bell there, whilst Edwards is coming back to fitness... So to play that role, there was literally no one else other then Tyreece
  • Absolutely awful performance.  Yes Cardiff are a nice side, but when you make them look like 2010 Barcelona,  there's something seriously wrong with your workrate and organisation. I do worry that the attempt to improve our football has instead cost us our biggest strength, our solidity. The ability to be outplayed,  but keep the ball out, especially in away games. And we're still being outplayed anyway.

I would have started with Bell anyway instead of Bindon, but at half time would just have swapped Bell for Alli, and play a 343, with Bindon at right centre back. Instead his double change moved TC to a sort of left wing back role, and Mesik to the wrong side, blunting both.

Alli was hopeless, Bindon poor defensively,  and he's making Lloyd Jones worse - Jones was much better in the second half. Ouma hardly improved things when he came on, our midfield never got to grips on the game.

Yes he wasn't great last season and he was poor against Spurs,  but the non use of Knibbs is getting ludicrous. He's the second most expensive signing under Jones; clearly we were desperate to sign him 13 months ago. There must have been a reason for this.

Genuinely what does Knibbs have to do to get a game?
  • Lots of people saying we have the break to give us a reset. Look how we got on last season after the international breaks! It seems the more time we have on the training pitch the worse we get. Maybe we should keep NJ away from Sparrows Lane and just let the players kick the ball around for three weeks!
I have never been taken in by the start we had and always thought we would be in a relegation scrap. Was hoping there would be three worse teams but can't think who they could be at the moment.

I'm more worried about how shit he might be, if he manages to get on the pitch. Maybe it is Jones being the stubborn idiot that he can be... But there surely has to be a reason he's being overlooked, and for me the more "logical" answer has to be down to the fact that Harvey isn't performing at a level of what is required of him in training.
  • It will take some time to adjust, New players and formation, as well as trying to be more attacking. Growing pains.
Why so negative? We haven't been in this position for many years, some people just enjoy the negativity.
Agreed on this that time is needed with new players coming in.
That aside, Jones needs to keep away from publically criticising the team.
Ultimately I fear that IF we get to a run of ten without a win then we'll be in trouble.

Hard for Jones to claim it was an off-day when our underlying statistics have been awful all season. We were due a pasting, even after Stoke.

We can't keep entering games expecting to only have 30% procession.
Yes, occasionally we'll get the odd Ipswich away, Middlesbrough or West Ham type of result, but getting played off the park, week in week out, isn't the way forward.
We don't take care of the ball, we constantly give it back due to careless passes or wrong decisions.
We saw today just the type of player that we desperately needed to sign, but didn't.
Instead we signed yet another defensive midfielder who constantly looks to pass the ball backwards.
There is a horrible negativity running through the team with the emphasis always on safety first. It's boring, predictable and makes it easy for the opposition to run rings around us.

Completely this.  It’s embarrassing.  To make matters worse, the longer the season goes on, the harder it is to get away with it.  The players will simply tire.  If we just had 2 players that were good on the ball.  Having a bit more of it would really help alleviate some of the pressure

the problem is that because you reference the wins at the Ipswich’s etc, NJ has probably gone more into it as a way of play over time. The most worrying thing for me is that I don’t see anyone in our team who can get hold of the ball and move it about.  We’re so slow when we do get the ball as well.  We often pass it backwards, sideways and then because we don’t have that guile, eventually knock it over the top

it needs addressing, I just don’t know how we rectify it with the players we have

    100% on our playing style.

Quality upfront costs dough and it seems that the board are not prepared to do this.

I'm in the same boat FA , okay he was completely anonymous away at Spurs but how bad a trainer is he if he's not getting a look in when we need some attacking threat off the bench? Someone that I genuinely wondered if we'd sell in the last few days of the window because I just didn't see where he'd get games and I'm still not sure now.

Is this another £1.5-2m wasted on someone that won't put the effort in that NJ requires as a non negotiable?

Jones said we were inept out of possession, but surely he’s got to say/see we were inept with possession as well.  He says he sees very good footballers every day in training, but we never play like it.  Most if not all the team are poor on the ball
They look good in training cos they’re playing against shit players  the Under 16s
    Fixed it for you.

I hope that Ouma being deployed today is a mental kick up the arse for both Knibbs / Carey
I can't see Jones being so stubborn to play Ouma simply to prove a point, and no other reason - Yet at the same time, for the good of the Football club, I hope it is a message sent to Harvey / Sonny saying: "You want to play, I need to see similar from you in training"
