What do they prepare and do on a regular basis though? Because if it's good attacking expansive football, we don't ever see it.
Work hard, press with aggression and do the basics right gets us to 23rd in xG created.

Apologies if already mentioned as was 200 new posts, when are Big Billy and Chalobah back?

Two players that don’t get bullied and have quality, badly miss them.
Don’t think we will see Chalobah for quite a while, I suspect.

Would have been 6-1 without the keeper making some good saves. At some point our owners will need to pay some decent money on players to stay in this league. Getting quality players on the cheap because they are always injured is not a sustainable strategy.
That's the problem, the owners obviously didn't want to splash out on transfer fees for quality. Getting decent players in in January will be impossible.
In a thread now closed, Large, today made a comment that he personally doesn't think the gaffer had been backed anywhere near enough in the summer transfer market, to which I responded that I totally agreed.

I wonder whether it might be worth re-viewing the latest " look at me " YouTube video from JR re the playing squad/latest acquistions & considering whether he had over egged the situation in terms of Nathan's input. The term " these are Nathan's players " when criticising performances should be used sparingly IMO.

Outlay, by the current owners, would appear to be a valid concern  both on & off the pitch, maybe more than we had anticipated.

Could the saying "quantity rather than quality" be applicable once the window had closed - partly due to the injuries in the Cup match ?

Absolute pony, to the level of embarrassing.
It is going to be a very, very long season.
I get the fact that we are not a good passing team and cannot play through the midfield.
I get the fact that we have a low budget and have to rely on lower level players.
I even get the fact that NJ tries to set us up from the back and we are not great up front (TC aside).
But what I don't get with a NJ side is the fact that we consistently get out muscled in games. We were totally lightweight today and got beaten to every 1st and 2nd ball going.
That is my main concern going forward, given our shortage of class on the ball.
Absolutely no fight or guts in this team whatsoever and that to me is what an NJ team should have in spades to make up for our obvious lack of class on the ball.
Can't even try and blame the officials for that one either!
Concerned for this season now after a promising start.
Cardiff have a disinterested owner, and didn't sign many players in the summer,  so we can't even use budget as an excuse for today, unlike against Stoke.

We've spent plenty of money since promotion,  just not very well sadly.

Letting Doc go and replacing him with Ouma might be the worst decision we’ve ever done.
What would doc bring to the team? We spent much of last season saying him and Cov worked reasonably poorly together
The problem is no effective number 10, not the defensive mids. It was the same last season.

Made Cardiff look like Barcelona, no creativity or much of a desire if I'm honest. Complete and utter crap no matter how it gets spun. Long hard winter ahead ........ Gave up watching after 60 mins or so, feel for those that travelled to be served up with that.

Was expecting Ouma to need time to gel, not written him off yet. Disappointed by Grant atm, was expecting a bit more from him but if his best position is left wing, he better improve elsewhere as TC is also most effective there. The issue, as last year, is that we are playing a formation that really needs pace on both wings and we are woefully light on the right particularly if Alli has a shocker, as he did today.

We had short spells where we looked dangerous, but it was much like the previous few games in that it was Leaburn and TC doing all the attacking work on their own and not receiving anywhere near enough support from those behind them.

Grant had a bit of a stinker - constantly ended possible counter-attacks by either turning into trouble or just not being fast enough to pull away. Alli fell over his own feet every time he got the ball (as usual) and is clearly not good enough at this level. Skipp made a few good tackles, but is seemingly allergic to moving the ball forward. Ouma came on and was, once again, abysmally bad in everything he did.

I know they made some mistakes today, but I really don’t think our back four are the problem. Get Koumetio and Ramsay back, while slowly building Josh up after his horrible injury, and we’ve got decent quality and depth.

It’s midfield where the issues lay. Coventry and Skipp is a pairing that’s severely lacking in the creativity necessary to initiate quick counters after winning the ball themselves (which they’re great at) or collecting the ball from our strong defensive unit (Lloyd wins every header and we never build from it). If the ball does make it to Grant, he isn’t quick enough to draw defenders with runs and doesn’t play off Leaburn’s knockdowns effectively enough.

I’d have Coventry (such an intelligent tackler and denier of space, far more progressive than Skipp) as my pivot, dropping Knibbs/JRC back to play alongside him. Both Knibbs and JRC are naturally more forward-thinking/technical, as they’re used to playing further up the pitch, while still possessing the physical attributes to compete/dominate in the busiest part of the pitch (Knibbs = height and presence, JRC = great engine and combative).

I’d then have Carey roaming in front of them. He works incredibly hard, is a fabulous at-speed ball carrier when he gets space to push forward, and proved last season he has an eye for goal from distance/when arriving late. Grant works well in tight spaces, but we should stretch the pitch to create room for midfielders to better feed Leaburn and TC. Carey can do that.

I’m still positive we have enough to avoid a relegation scrap, but there are some concerning patterns in how we’re struggling to move the ball forward. I really hope we can get everyone back to full fitness and working on some transitional tactics over this international break.

I simply don't recognise the Knibbs and Carey you describe above as the same players we have seen on the pitch this year. If only.

I’m a Jones fan and an eternal optimist. I try and see the positives and accept there will be negatives.

But that was really poor. I always worry when the manager questions the desire and effort of their team. I worry when he says some players aren’t at the level we need. I worry when the same issues (namely the opposition midfield being able to run through ours at will most games).

I don’t know why, maybe because I sense a little bit of discontent in the squad and some uncertainty with the ownership, but I’m starting Jones may not be here at the end of the season.

I hope I’m wrong as it will mean we are ok and still in this division but I just have a feeling.

Be nice to get an update. Heard nothing unless I’ve missed it.

Fear because of his injury record we’re reluctant to give a timeline.

That is twice in recent weeks we've made fairly ordinary sides look exceptional, QPR & Cardiff. It is worrying the manner in which we concede possession so often, it truly looks like we do not want the ball at all, the goals and moments at the minute are coming from mental maverick decisions largely. Got 3 weeks to sort it out but we need to be more involved in the game when we come back, I'm not expecting us to win every week but I am expecting us to at least compete

Everyone hoping chalobah comes back - i thought when he was signed he would be back up to the centre mids as we knew he would only last a handful of games per season.  Thought at the time it was more opportunistic signing than anything else.

Worrying if we think and hope he is the answer.

  • You bought the players, picked the team (and the subs) and chose the tactics.

    All on you old boy.

He didn’t play in the game though, a huge amount of responsibility is on the players out there

It’s just a feeling. I don’t normally resort to what could be considered a fairly knee jerk sentiment but the last two away games, and even to some extent the QPR game have made me think a bit deeper as to what the issue is.

I think there are some odd choices and decisions being made but maybe this international break is just what management, players and fans need.

They will both be back again soon, Big Billy before Chalobah.

They will then play 2 games each before both being out injured for another 3 months.
  • Jones fault, starting line up
not suited for Cardiff away, poor tactics and poor substitutions. If I was Knibbs I would be fuming how I’m not getting a game with those players starting in front of him

Charlton's League Record with Chalobah: Played 3, Won 3, Points 9.

Charlton's League Record without Chalobah: Played 5, Won 0, Drawn 3, Lost 2, Points 3.

I'm not saying that difference was entirely down to him, but boy are we missing him. We really do need someone in the middle of the park with the tenacity and guile to turn defence into attack. Out of the current squad, if that's not Nathaniel I don't know who it is. With little or no hope of anyone new coming in for at least 3½ months, we badly need someone to step up to the plate.

I said what I did through the frustration we all felt today and yes I I do think he can blame the players at times as he references here. I had the bollocks to say I was wrong on this occasion. I don't need a snarky keyboard warrior response.

Poor from the word go. At the match. Cardiff fans were wandering where the goals were going to come from before the game,  within 20 mins we gifted them 2.

Pure dross no-one looked interested or cared. Cant believe we beat west ham a few weeks ago. Bindon looks so out of his depth. Ouma what ever his name is, is a bloody joke. So many misplaced passes and no urgency from all of them.

    Not starting to look good

Fair point to be honest, Fen, they said they were wrong🤷🏻‍♂️
  • The first quality NJ has mentioned about 90% of players we have bought to the club since he joined is "he's a good athlete".

We have an excellent running club.

Technically they look miles below levels needed.

Would love to watch a team like Cardiff regularly, it must be an absolute joy.

Listened to one of their fans on the radio in the run in last season, and it stuck with me as he said, whether they went up or not the season had been one of the most enjoyable for years given the quality of football they played.

We could’ve also took our chances in the Pompey game.

No point looking at could ofs
