Albums without a duff track.

edited August 2011 in Not Sports Related

It occurs to me that there are some albums without a filler, a novelty or a rubbish track on them. Some come close, for example nearly every Beatles album, but are disqualified because they have a crap track in the mix i.e the Ringo track they had to put on. Others simply are one step from perfection because of one bad call, e.g The Swimming Song on the otherwise perfect first album by Kate and Anna McGarrigle .

I know there may be a lot of qualifiers out there; they shouldn't be nominated because they're a particular favourite (although that helps) but because they are more or less flawless. Maybe because they have no tracks you skip.

I'll start with some easy ones:

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd (and certainly Wish You Were Here)

Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy

Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus

Blue by Joni Mitchell

Thriller by Michael Jackson

Obviously there are others.

  • In Ghost Colour by Cut Copy, all winner no filler
  • Brothers In Arms- Dire Straits.

  • Physical graffiti: Led Zep.
Add to that Led Zep 2, Led Zep 1... in fact almost all of their output as far as I am concerned!
  • Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights.
  • Bridge over troubled waters, for the younger person Simon and Garfunkle
  • Exit Planet Dust by the Chemical Brothers
  • Physical graffiti: Led Zep.

Yea fair do's: I feel it's the most 'complete' of their stuff. Though all good!

    Also Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath.
  • another Joni Mitchell: Court & Spark

Santana: Abraxas, Caravanserai, 3rd Album (Man with Outstretched hand cover)

    Temptations Greatest Hits

Miles Davis: Bitches Brew (one stream of hard to decipher supernoise)

Frank Sinatra: Songs for Swinging Lovers

(you notice, nothing after about 1975 !!!!), am I stuck in my listening ways ?

    without question
  • Trouble is, it's all so subjective
I'd argue that every track on the Thin Lizzy album is crap (no filler or novelty just a bunch of ordinary songs); particularly set against, say, Revolver which you might disqualify due to Yellow Submarine.

    Getting into the spirit ,these:-
    Sgt Pepper - The Beatles
    Revolver - The Beatles
    Beggars Banquet - The Stones
    Something Else - The Kinks
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd

That's at least twenty years old...

  • Moontan - Golden Earring. Try to find the original vinyl, because I think some CD releases leave off one of the tracks and add some others!

Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy

    Paulo Nutini - These Streets

If I had more time I'd add a couple hundred more.
