  • Lads, I understand AO might have a lot of upside and Wrexham have a different transfer/player development policy to us.

But with him being 3rd choice for them, surely it's more of a risk to get him on a long contract and he does not develop with us and we end up with a team of 2nd/3rd choice keepers on our book.
He played 39 games last season hardly a third choice keeper

He was 2nd choice at the start of the season then Ward got injured. Now he is 3rd choice behind Patterson and Ward

Loan for AO is good if we get first refusal, agree a fee and, ideally, he can play against his parent club

Frees up money for JRS and gives us a good chance to look at him.

Stick a clause in to way we have to sign him if he males 40 appearances and then, if he turns out to be guff we just drop him and walk away.  Who cares if we piss Wrexham off - we;ll be in the premier league by then

So yes he is Wrexham’s third choice keeper.

I’m not saying he is rubbish, just that I don’t think a loan deal is that bad because he’s clearly far from proven.

I’d be surprised if they announced the signing of AO without announcing the departure of TK at a similar time. No way we’d leave ourselves with any risk of having 4.

Just out of curiousity, would we have had to release our 25 allocated players yet with gaps or does it not get allocated until the end of the window?

Loan move makes sense for us more than Wrexham, we can take a look over the next 12 months and don't have to pay a fee that impacts our ability to spend on a RW. If successful, we're in pole position to sign a talented young keeper on a free transfer next summer.
But if Wrexham are willing to just let him go - given the contract is up next year that's basically what they are doing, then why not ask for a free transfer?  No different to them but more beneficial for us.

Unless either we're not paying his wages in full (which seems odd given I don't think he'd be that high an earner), or Okonkwo wants to keep his options open next summer, which would possibly be a shame if so.

Sorry for being pessimistic but I get the feeling the Holsgrove transfer is erm, brown bread.

End of the window for finalising naming the 25.

Maybe if JRS doesn’t happen, we could look at that Mbappse fella?

Frustrating if Okonkwo is a loan - he does well and we risk losing him in the summer, and any resale value for a young keeper.
Alternatively you can look at it if that happens is that we massively improved our keeper for this season and a financially incredible move for us.

If he does turn out average then we’ve saved ourselves being stuck with another keeper that is average.

This is a good deal for us

In the bigger picture, a loan for AO can effectively open up JRS. So we have to look at the end result. AO and JRS in and we are transformed squad wise from last season.

AO could be a loan with obligation to buy couldn't it? Just us kicking the fee down the road till next summer as we need the money this window for JRS. Not in Wrexham's interest to loan with no obligation as they will end up with nothing next summer.

No fee next summer as hes out of contract. So if there is an option to buy it will be in Jan.

For a fee next summer to count in next years budget for us AO would be out of contract already. At a push maybe it’s a loan with a fee that gets triggered on 20 or so appearances but I think Wrexham are just willing to take the hit

So I was on a roll yesterday with this one.

In the last 4 seasons he’s played

    33
    39
I don’t know how he can be much more proven

    Maybe.

Just feels a bit 'Thierry Small', get a guy in a short term contract (rather than say 3 years), see him do well (hopefully) and then see him get a better offer elsewhere for next season.

At least if he does well enough to get that interest, he'll have done well for us, mind.

Only one of those was at this level though.

I think he's much better than Kaminski though, personally.

No reason why we couldn’t sign Okonkwo permanently in January. Gives us time to sort a deal out if we want to.

See no reason why he would want to sign a deal in Jan. Wait 6 months and sign for a big ol' signing on fee

He could be their 10th choice keeper - he is still better than what we have

I don’t know how he can be much more proven

The moment Wrexham got to this level they brought in another keeper to be number 1. That keeper ended up being injured so AO actually managed to play most of the season at this level.

Wrexham, who then had a whole season of seeing him at this level, still saw this position as a weakness and spent big cash on another keeper making him 3rd choice keeper.

So whatever we think - he didn't prove himself to those in charge at Wrexham.

So I go back to my original point. I think having him on loan is much less of a risk then having him signed up on a long term contract when he is not proven at this level.
