All the best Albert (you money-grabbing git!). At least he's gone to the AL and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his career average against AL pitching. He didn't hit Texas well in the WS aside from his record-breaking performance in Game 3. A great player nonetheless.
Let's hope Freese stays healthy and Holliday stops being such a wuss. Berkman for 2012 NL MVP!
Was just reading the mlb.com story about the marlins making a large offer to Wilson when they updated to Pujols story and added Wilson's name ?!?
I'm not that up to date with either the Angels and Marlins strength in depth so does this put them way ahead of the pack or just in the same "favourites" as the likes of the Rangers, Cards, Phillies, Brewers, Yankees etc
One of the good aspects of MLB is that money doesn't determine success. Only the Cards and Red Sox have won the World Series more than once since 2000. The Angels won it in 2002 and have had one of the bigger payrolls in the game. No let up there as they look to give Texas more of a fight for the AL West next season.
The Marlins are now bankrolled by an apparently dodgy but loaded geezer and it remains to be seen whether a smart new stadium and high-priced hires of players and manager brings success and ups the attendances. Actually, despite having had a relatively small payroll, they managed to win the WS in '97 and '03 (famously against the Yankees) but they've never drawn significant support. Will be very interesting to see how competitive they are vs the Phils having finished bottom of the NL East and well below .500 last year. That berth looks to be booked for the Mets for 2012.
Should be a very interesting season. Can Bobby Valentine (who took the Mets to the Subway World Series vs the Yankees in 2000) put the Red Sox back on track?

COYRedbirds.
Thank you for this.
Nothing quite warms up a Cub fans heart on a cold winter day than reading a Cards fan try to reason himself into being ok with losing the greatest player in franchise history and simultaneously pivoting to place all hopes and dreams on Fat Elvis.
Really, thank you.
If, in a subsequent post, you might contemplate how important Ryan Theriot is to the future of the ballclub, that would be most appreciated.
With the Pujols money burning a hole, things could get fluid in the Cards' middle infield. Can't see Theriot figuring prominently, if at all, next season.
What's the view on the new management at Wrigley? Feeling positive?
HI, re: loved and lost... you are, of course, exactly right. And Cards and Cubs fans both have the "Mark McGwire-Sammy Sosa" embrace to prove it. Wait, we're not supposed to talk about that anymore. Nor about how LaRussa responded when Mark kept asking the equipment manager for larger hat sizes, eventually settling on a line specifically made for the St. Louis zoo elephants, or the research Tony did on HGH after seeing those letters on a vial in yet another one of Dave Duncan's successful projects. Glass houses and all that, as at some point towards the end of Sosa's career, we pleaded with him at Camden Yards to give up baseball and try out for the part of The Hulk's primary nemesis as The Marvel revamp got off the ground.
PM: Again, congrats. Fantastic year. View from most of the local media and talking heads on Epstein and crew is overwhelmingly positive. I'll be taking some time away from the team (every year a trip home for the Cubs convention or to Mesa for spring training is considered, but not this one). The parallels aren't perfect, but I've watched the rise of CAFC this season under Powell wistfully imagining what life would be like with Sandberg at the helm and competent people in the front office. Disappointment turns to bitterness, hence my joy at Cardinals supporters explaining "on the other hand, now we can afford to keep Kyle Lohse"
LOL. Nice one CPA. I'd forgotten about old Corky.........easily done I guess.
Shame we both only have one more season of drubbing the Astros before they scuttle off to endure Albert once again smashing them to every corner of Minute Maid Park.
I can't believe I've missed this Baseball thread!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a huge, let me repeat huge Tampa Bay Rays fan...read their webpage every day etc etc I backed them at the beginning of the 2008 season at 200/1 (£10) when they lost the World Series to the Phillies - gutted! Got a great chance this year with Pena back. Will have best starting pitching rotation this year.
Mid Feb for a couple of weeks fitness, and then Spring Training pre-season games start beginning March for a month, season will start first week of April
Watched RedSox first spring training game last night on mlb.tv, beat the Twins 8-3. Think season opener is April 13. By then should be able to relax and enjoy mlb safe in the knowledge that we will be back in Championship.

Been a baseball fan for 30 odd years and love the game. I follow the dodgers so there's not been that much to cheer about of late. Not surprisingly perhaps my favourite moment was the kirk gibson homer that won game 1 of the 88 world series - " I don't believe what I just saw!" to quote the famous jack buck comment. Hoping for better things this season. Game 6 of last years cards v rangers ws was won of the sporting moments of the year for me, just a pity that so few people in this country would have seen it.

Dodgers just been bought by a consortium containing Magic Johnson for over a $billion.
Could be worse you could follow the Cubs like me, gonna be a long old season!
Miamis new stadium sporting an aquarium behind home plate.I could see something like that behind the goals at the valley! Saw the blue jays play in Dunedin and they are looking good so I am going for the the blu jays this season.
Blue Jays smashed it in Spring Training: 24W-7L. I'm going to predict they'll finish ahead of the Red Sox. Will that be enough to make the Postseason, I doubt it.
