[cite]Posted By: IdleHans[/cite]The FA have repeated the same stupid mistake they made with the swede by removing the break clause BEFORE the tournament. When Sven revealed himself to be utterly clueless in the world cup, England were stuck with him for several more years on the basis of it, and he was a total lame duck.

They have now repeated the exact same error with Capello who, if he has any honour (Sven didnt) should resign if England are knocked out at the group stage. Doubtless he'll carry on taking the money too.

    Curbs for England!

I have, up to now, been a big supporter of Capello. He has a proven successful track record with big clubs in Spain and Italy. And I had high hopes for him when he was appointed England manager. As my comments about Parkinson testify I believe the manager/coach is the single most important appointment a club or country has to make. The manager/coach has a massive influence on the way a team performs and how successful they are. The England performances leading up to this World Cup and the last two games have just been getting worse and worse. There is something about Capello's methods and attitude that has had an increasingly negative impact on the ability of the England players to play effective football. Most of the England team are world class players playing in the best league in the world. They don't become bad players overnight. Maybe Capello's methods are just not suited to International management. I think if England lose on Wednesday Capello will resign. But, it would not surprise me if he refused any kind of pay off. He comes across to me as a man who has the kind of pride and honour that would prevent him seeking any reward for failure.

Having stated the above, the team I have most enjoyed watching so far and the team playing the best football is Argentina. And they are coached by Maradonna! So I might have to go away and rethink all this. But, one thing that definitely comes across with the Argentinians, and obviously has a lot to do with Maradonna, is their team spirit. One of the most important tasks for a manager is to engender a strong team ethic and spirit, a 'us against the world' mentality. Mourinho always gets this right with his teams. Maybe, if you have a group of world class players to coach all you need to do to be successful is to build that team spirit?
  • Carragher? though he was suspended from the next game, and anyway think Dawson needs to be given a chance.

Must admit on the last two performances I am thinking the unthinkable! not starting with Rooney, although I would like to know what is exactly is the issue with him is it lack of form!, or an injury niggle.

Really feel that Joe Cole, has to start, and the likes of Lennon and Wright /Philllips has done little for me in the tournament.

Noticed Lampard has vanished from posters on here, not that I would defend him, mind you who is certain for the game, on present form and performance!.
Not sure if I am more upset, than perplexed with the performance last night.... I know you have to stick by your players, but god do some of them need a wake up call!
  • As much as I dont like him as a person, I would start with Defoe. He at least does have a track record as a striker.
Why on earth do we have to always play with a target man (traditional English striker who is not very good at international level), what other nation uses the tactic of lumping the ball.
Even if we continue this to use this tactic, we do need someone who can guess where the ball is going to bounce off the big lump. And that is someone we dont have.
  • why would they need a"wake up call" ?

1/They are pros and paid huge dosh to do very little
2/ They are playing international football ---------------its an HONOUR
3/They are in the World Cup---the Worlds greatest event

either they perform to an exceptable level or they get the f**k out for someone who will.

as one fan said today going to the world cup will cost him £20,000 and his has saved for 4 years. They £20,000 isnt even one days pay to Rooney.

And thats what Rooney and others have to understand. We pay to watch football because we have not got the talent to play. They get paid well because they have.
4 year build up, 180 minutes of play, 1 goal against 2 teams who quite frankly, in my opinion, are teams we should should be putting to the sword with ease.
  • Don't really believe in all this money stuff. If it was a problem, it would be a problem for every other country with a decent football team.

Thought the team looked like they were trying too hard. They need to settle down and play their football, and not go rushing about, mis-controlling the ball and being to hurried to boot upfield.

That being said, Capello seems to be committing the same mistakes that every other England manager of recent times has - By seeing some players as seemingly un-droppable. Rooney was playing the worst game of his life last night and yet he still stayed on. Gerrard is moved out to the left to accomodate a constantly invisible Lampard. I just don't see other top nations doing this. I mean, Brazil didn't even take Ronaldinho to this world cup. Could you really see him being left out if he was English? The media would go mad and the England manager just wouldn't do it.

If you have a set of players that you cannot drop, and you're forced to try to fit them all in - even if it means they are playing in positions that they're quite clearly not comfortable in, you're never going to have the fluidity or shape to compete at the highest level.
  • Great post Chunes
  • rooney starts for the simple reason he can and has produced it in the past, enough of the circus act emile heskey let defoe have a shot. Would the argies or the italians find room for emile? the donkey love in must cease now.

Having seen that flick I wholehartedly agree. Was disturbing and no wonder they are distracted if theyve been watching that on the team coach.
  • Great post from chunes. Fabregas & Torres don't always start for Spain, Milito - probably the best striker in Europe last season - doesn't start for Argentina & neither does Aguereo. They don't play because it doesn't suit the balance of the team. What would be so wrong with bringing Lampard off the bench? Capello would probably try & play six midfield if he was Spain manager!

Agree entirely on your first point.'Overpaid' and 'no effort' are far too easy moans after every poor performance. We tried, but we just didn't settle, and indeed have looked shaken since Green let in that clanger. If he hadn't, I'd wager we would have nicked another in the second half against the yanks and be looking at a very different side at this moment.

The 'undroppable' thing is a difficult one. To some extent we just have to hope that Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney do fire, because they're the players with the potential to do real damage in the competition. Trying decent and possibly more consistent players (say dropping Rooney and playing Crouch and Defoe) may level out our performances to that of one of the teams buzzing around just behind the contenders (someone like Uruguay) but it also might cap our potential at that decent level. The world cup is full of teams that play decently but get knocked out because they don't have players that will do anything special. Imo we have to gamble on sticking with at least some of them, Rooney especially.
  • Big meeting for frank exchange of views tonight. Did anyone know why terry was giving the press con and not the captain?
  • Cause it'll be hard for Gerrard to say a lot of the things Terry did, I think Capello will change it on Wednesday
  • I like sussex's way of thinking ..... we need the big players to do something for us to achieve the dream in this tourney...... safetey first 1/4 finals will do attitude is not for me ....
  • [cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite] they must have been nobbled ...... shocking .... expose on rooney in the sunday papers i'm expecting after that performance cos he looked like he had something on his mind ... ridiculous

TBF though, when you said 'Sunday papers' I think you probably meant THAT Sunday, not three months later. Doesn't exactly take Nostradmus to predict that Rooney will end up in the tabloid press again at some point in the future for knocking off a brass. :o)
