Superdeal in Bexleyheath was cleared out overnight. In case you don't know them, they are the tv retailer next to the outdoor butchers, opposite Laughing Buddha down the Broadway. They have (had?) another shop in Sidcup so not sure if completely gone. Always empty but good to bargain with and bought 2 Plasma's from them in the past. Bexleyheath is looking really sparse now. I live in Orpington where it's grim but Bexleyheath is gettting worse by the day!
That is 3 chain stores in Bexleyheath in a week....... They also closed one of the three branches of Santander, and having 2 branches of Barclay's seems a bit over the top with all the so called wonderful internet banking ( although there is always a queue). I appreciate that the Santander was because they took over other business's, and probably could not sell the lease but 3 branches did seem ridiculous. Pity they could not have sold the lease to the co-op bank. I would imagine that the HMV closure will upset the centre management as it was a big name. Personally speaking I am more upset at Jackson Radio closing at Blendon, great customer service, and always had in stock what you needed, and not overpriced. Had to drive to B and Q today to get a cooker light, 50 percent more expensive than Jackson's and encased in plastic. I noticed that Bexley village is to have a fourth men's hairdressers, not that I give a toss being a bald git
My local highstreet is filled with empty shopfronts and due for another as our Blockbuster has announced it's closing,if Wimpy does go than that is another empty unit in a prime location. Sad times
Should be ok, for now, my younger brother works there and says they sell a lot of rubbish to people for a high mark up.
Sounds like a few people's views of Jessops! As the pursestrings are tightened, stores like H&B will be found out eventually.
Agreed they could be in trouble but as far as im aware Jessops problem was not selling much but charging a high mark up, sales seem fine at H&B as according to him, still get many people buying the high priced "medicines" and vitamins that they sell.
I don't know what the future is for our high streets. The idea that independent shops will reappear I can't see personally. It's our own faults - if we supported our high street stores they'd still be there, but we don't - we buy stuff cheap on t'internet. It's a shame, but that's progress I guess.
DFS? Do they sell much? Was after sofas a few months back but avoided going there with their fake 'sale' all year round.
don't know how all the furniture/carpet stores survive .. well long term they probably won't
They're dab hands at this game. They go into admin every few years and come out again trading under a slightly different name each time - leaving the poor sofa-awaiting fuckers who were unfortunate enough to be on the merry go round when it crashed out of pocket. Sounds like football!
A good way to gauge this is how many email offers you get from companies and the offers. I have seen a big increase in email offers from many of the shops that have gone under.
If small independent carpet shops are falling over (mine locally seem unresponsive to price and service pressure) and people can't get mortgages to move.....why would a warehouse that buys a lot of carpet and sells it cheap struggle ?
Robert Peston was talking about this on Today. Said that there is a school of thought among some economists that we won't see any growth in the economy until we've seen a lot more of this sort of thing, not less. Basically, these ailing companies are limping along sucking out all the available credit in the market until they finally go belly up. Hence there's none left for start ups or better, but perhaps not as well established, companies.
You can follow the logic I suppose but scant consolation to the 1000's losing their jobs.

very true .. it's called the unacceptable aspect (face) of capitalism .. except it seems to becoming more commonplace and more acceptable

They were in the sh*t not long ago. Like HMV but don't have the luxury of selling CDs & DVDs...
