If small independent carpet shops are falling over (mine locally seem unresponsive to price and service pressure) and people can't get mortgages to move.....why would a warehouse that buys a lot of carpet and sells it cheap struggle ?
There's probably an underlaying issue somewhere.

    New Look.

I did hear their name mentioned yesterday.

Best advice for anyone at the moment? If you have vouchers for any store whatsoever, get out, use them & make sure you all give cash in future.

They'll find it will last longer if they made it out of wood and plastic!

How does the 'Private' chain of adult emporiums and suchlike stay open? Not that it's my thing but who buys their porn in magazine or DVD formats these days?

    Blimey...even the page has closed!!

Have to go down to Crawley on Tuesday. Always depressing walking through the town. Was probably looked at in new wonder in the 60s, a bit like Stevenage, but bloody awful now.

I reckon C & A and Woolworths will be the next to go.

Bought my Crombie in C & A with my first month's wages in October 1971.

    ;o)

I thought that C&A was long gone until a recent trip to Amsterdam. Loads of them out there. Must have just pulled out of the UK.

Gravesend (like most other towns I suspect is just riddled with pound shops, coffee shops and cash converters style. Never thought they'd be so many shops buying my old crap instead of selling it to me............

Well Tango C&A are a dutch owned company you may recall they had an "upmarket" storte chain called Oakland for a while but both have gone from our highstreet. Have to agree with the hight street but I have to say the local authorities do themselves no favours. My nearest high street is Welling and all it consists of is charity shops, fast food outlets, banks and cash converters but the real problem is parking, which is limited, none the less Bexley council employ hoards of Traffic Wardens who are like the Taliban, one even tried to book me whilst I was buying a ticket. So the outcome is that everyone who can go to Bluewater where you can park all day free of charge do so.

The the council bemoan the fact that it's killing the high street! The answer is simple don't rip off the public with ridiculous parking charges and have a more lenient policy towards someone who's 5-10 minutes late back tothewir car, employ traffic wardens who speak English so you can talk to them and don't rip the piss out of business rates. If they are note prepared to do that then stop f*****g moaning. End of rant!

Once Sony and Microsoft confirm their one console games, as in that disc can only be used with one console... Say good bye to all video game shops... People will choose the easier option of super meerkats or DL.

Are there actually any shops left apart from Game who specialise in computer games?

I would imagine that the physical formats would be gone within a few years.

Marks & Spencers. Living off past glories.

Agreed - they were always good at doing good quality basic / classics like plain polo shirts and stuff like that - now they have badges and nonsense all over everything and the quality is crap as they try to compete with the chinese stuff. They need to get back to basics. They need a new motto 'We've dropped the nonsense'

I have noticed that Waterstones sell Kindles. That's like turkeys voting for Christmas.

I think there are still a lot of people who prefer real books to Kindles, so I wouldn't think Waterstones demise is imminent.

    There's a C & A in Marseille also, Tango.

But as you say, must be about 10 years since they closed their UK stores.

They must be doing something right as Pinarello (the manufacturer that was making Team Skys road bikes) are now using them as their official UK outlet now.

I don't agree with M&S actually, yeah their clothing range isn't exactly hipster but it certainly serves a purpose for a certain age group.

And their food section is awesome, I think they could survive of that alone if it came to it.

To be fair they always seemed good in the bike area of business, but advise anybody never ever to use the car servicing/repair side of the business, they are crap!
