It's a combination of loads of things as to why we're not up to it at the moment. How do we know that he's not playing his 3rd choice player in that position because so and so is carrying an injury, or they feel the opposite player in that position will be better contained by the 3rd choice player? We dont know. We just see what's put in front if us and use the benefit of hindsight to get our pointy fingers out! He can't then come out in the media and say well he played badly but couldn't play who I wanted as that would be unprofessional. He has to suck it up and move on.
People need to stop revisiting our League One title-winning season.
Yes, CP did a fantastic job, but he had no trouble with injuries (Solly, Kermo and Jackson this season), had a 20 goal-a-season man (BWP), and, let's be honest, League One is of such a poor standard compared to the Championship. CP had the luxury to pick the same XI week in week out in our title-winning season bar a couple of changes now and then: Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Taylor, Wiggins, Green, Hollands, Stephens, Jackson, Kermorgant, BWP. CP even told us at an East Kent Addicks meeting that his team talks before the matches were 'go out and win the game' and there was so much belief in the squad that they would win that it worked.
Last season we over acheived, and you could say that we had momentum from winning the league, but he managed to do this with better resources (Haynes, Fuller, Obika up front for example).
This season we have been found out in terms of our play (everyone knowing that we are going to hoof to Kermorgant) and we have not strengethened our squad. Powell cannot be blamed for this. We know he wanted other players but due to our financial reasons they didn't come off, hence why we've thrown in youngsters, 2 strikers out of favour at their original clubs and we have a lack of strength in depth. However, he cannot be blamed for his tactics and team selection.
So, what to do?
Do the board sack him? Harsh, seeing as he has had limited resources. But he does have the role of picking the team and tactics, some of what can be questioned. However, RD has mentioned his blossoming relationship with CP in the 'Meet The Board' video, so this may seem unlikely. A new manager with the same team as the window closes doesn't scream out positive to me, although the rumours of Avram Grant coming in as director of football don't bode well.
Do you give him till the summer and look at his contract then? We have had a couple of arrivals from Liege, and we are likely to see a few more loans or permanents coming in before Friday if the rumours are to be believed, and we will see if this influx will help him turn the season around. However, by doing this there is a risk that players won't extend their contracts if CP doesn't, and we will be without 14 players and a manager come the summer.
Do we renew his contract now? He is very much in credit with the club, and has done as expected this year with his lack of resources (anyone who reckoned we wouldn't be in a relegation battle this year with a lack of business back in the summer has to be kidding themselves). Renew his contract, renew key players' contracts, bring in new players now, avoid relegation, and give him more money to rebuild in the summer.
If this time next year after rebuilding and giving him more resources we are still in a relegation battle then it may be time to look at sacking him, but not now.
Agree with everything there @ross. I think people need to calm down slightly and weigh up the good and bad of powell, and youll see he's actually done us proud and took us to a new level with very limited to work with in the last 18 months.
Got to go I'm afraid and I like the man. We just need a manager who can use the players we've got!play hoofball or whatever it takes to stay in this league to grind out some points from somewhere not just tinker and hope for best only to get out played every week?

I think the last line of this post is spot on... Since Powell has taken over we've never been in a Relegation scrap so he's gonna struggle to know how to get us out of the mess as is a new experience for him... this is the year for him to get that experience.

Different background scenarios so bad example. Allardyce has been backed financially with very large sums of money continuously. Powell hasn't been, infact the opposite, he's been cut back and the team/squad weakened. If Powell had spent money and was failing then I'm sure manys views on him would be different accordingly.
Think the 'Powell out' brigade might get their wish,if the Yann rumours are correct then I think CP will walk. Seems from the outside hes being undermined almost daily
No new manager would do any better with the same resources as Chris Powell has. It is a great fantasy to get a dressing room door thumper in like Warnock, there may even be a short term improvement in results, but without resources Warnock would be no better in my view than Powell. He would be expensive and would wangle himself a Pardewesque long term contract which would be down to Mr Duchatelet to fund. In the end he would be a here today gone tomorrow phenomena when he moves on like he always has, leaving us in who knows what kind of situation. I would rather Powell, Powell backed with resources ideally. However if not, I would rather face league one with Powell than with Warnock. If it could be accepted that on the face of it Mr Duchatelet intends towards balancing the books, and relying on youth and inter club movements. If Chris Powell can also accept that approach, and that he wouldn't be slaughtered (by Mr D) if results were affected, then we have a way forward. We may get relegated, but we at least shouldn't be going bust. Crowds would dwindle, and it would certainly be a quite expensive model short term, but success may come, home grown stars and so on, the crowds may pick up, and we may get a decently functioning football club on the go that is financially sound. It is a plan right or wrong, it is an aspiration right or wrong, but if I had inherited this basket case I would formulate a plan a little like that. The absolute key dynamic at the moment is the relationship between Mr Duchatelet and Chris Powell.
