Cannon St train was 5 carriages this morning. Didn't even bother. Got a Charing X train to London Bridge, changed there and got into work about 10 minutes earlier than normal. Maybe I should do that every day...

Worst case is they know that the leaf falling will mean delays to their trains

So rather than do something about it to get people there on time, they care more about ensuring that people cant get compensation by messing with the timetable
  • Options
Back in the day British Rail used to chop down every tree near a railway, they never had a chance to grow and cause the leaf fall problems. British Rail were still crap but leaves were not the problem they are today. Now they have to contend with environmental campaigners, conservation legislation and people crying about trees that were never there in the 1970s.

And it’s still taken me nearly an hour from Bexleyheath to London
Why is there this short term timetable? - Its not like there is any adverse weather at the moment?
And what the f$%k is the point of implementing a "short term amended timetable" when you then completely fail to stick to it, just like you do with the normal timetable.

The adverse weather is "leaf fall". 56 years since our species first conquered Everest, 49 years since Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, mankind has achieved greatness in many fields - the computer, the internet, mobile phones, electric cars, online pornography, the birth of the late-night kebab shop, etc, etc, etc. However, one great challenge still remains, which even the greatest minds in science and innovation have so far been unable to solve - getting fallen leafs off the train tracks. To me it seems like you could solve it by strapping a broom to the front of a train, but the great minds at South Eastern have decided that it's better to do f#£k all about it year after year and just keep it as yet another excuse on their long list of reasons for why they can't do what we pay them to do.

    C!*ts.
Disagree with everything you say apart from one bit.

Been doing the journey for about the same time as AFKA (27 years), first 22 on the Sidcup line and last 5 on the chislehurst line. Can honestly say that the Chis line absolutely pisses all over the Sidcup line (despite what Bob Neill tweets) and my last 5 years of commuting have been a breeze!

I get on the 6:27 from Orpington each morning and more often than not it will arrive at Charing Cross a few minutes early.
Always get a seat at a table, plenty of leg room and aircon is always working when needed.
In the evening I get the 16:14 in the other direction and have the same drama less trip in the other direction.

God only knows what has gone on the other lines into town, I can only think the that the Fat Controller lives somewhere on my line or you others have upset him big time and now he's giving it back to you in spades.

Yep, another reasonably content Orpington/Grove Park line commuter here tbh. Its miles better than the Bexleyheath line what I suffered for years. Had maybe half a dozen cancellations over the last 4 years into London and half a dozen on the way home. Just a bit cheesed off that they've pulled the 16:40 Tunbridge Wells service at New Cross as that got me into Orpington at 16:50 and I was walking in my front door just after 5pm. Now got a 20 min wait every night for a slow train. Ok when its mild but in winter its a bitch.

You know the day you decide to do that the CX train will be cancelled.

They generally run okay on all the lines at that time of the morning. Try travelling a couple of hours later, when they've had a train failure at West Malling and a shortage of available train crew at Robertsbridge and taken the executive decision that that's justification for departing or cancelling every train on the network for the next 6 hours.

Some poor woman gave birth on a Southeastern train last night. What a way to come in to the world. What a scene for all those involved in the birth. Someone has posted on twitter that she felt slightly odd getting on the tube after covered in blood! blimey.

A joker on Twitter asked if she was pregnant before she got on the delayed train!

At least she was on a High Speed, so slightly less grubby than the crap carriages that gets sent along Metro lines!

They'll be using that as an excuse for every delay and cancellation for the next 6 months.

Well I travel later in the day in the other direction and they leave 99% of the time without any problem. I wont say I never have a cancellation or a delay but anytime I travel, weekends included they are reliable.
That line is a success story for the rail industry.

You're effectively travelling outside rush hour, exactly the same as I do. I get into work for 8am and leave at 4pm. I'd rather do 9 to 5, but the trains are generally useless at that time of day, particularly in the morning.

South Eastern does prioritise the Mainline services going through London Bridge, at the expense of all of us on the Metro services who are still "congested in the London Bridge area" despite the completion of a a £6bn project to alleviate that problem, so that also contributes to the reasonable standard of service that you receive. I'd hardly call it "a success story for the rail industry" though, when they can only achieve a reasonable service for you by providing a horrendous service for people on shorter journeys.

Also, over £2,000 a year for a 30 mile round trip - I wouldn't call that a success story, I'd call that a gigantic piss take. I'm sure South Eastern class it as a success story though, while they're lining their pockets with our cash.
Can't help pointing out again that signalling, pathing and prioritising are completely in the hands of Network Rail and the Regulator, owned by the government and the taxpayer.

Basically we're taking the piss out of ourselves!

Yep, sorry, you are correct. Network Rail also foots the bill for any delay compensation, so hardly surprising that they prioritise the trains carrying people who have travelled further and paid more (and therefore entitled to more compensation) at the expense of those of us who can claim about £2 if they can be bothered.

Either way, it is far from a success story.
