Guehi is now staying at Palace according to BBC Sport. Would also assume this ends any chance of Gomez going to Palace but wonder if Newcastle might now try to get Gomez instead?
They certainly won't get £70m for him after this window, with only three more windows before his contract runs out unless, of course, they get him to sign a new one. Here's hoping he refuses to do so!
Incidentally Tyreece Campbell also went to Forest Hill school.
so did my brother and son, neither of whom have any interest in football, big disappointments, to the extent i tried to adopt Joe Gomez in a swap deal! Not many people know that
I reckon Newcastle have dodged a bullet there. I don't think that Guehi is that good and £70m is ridiculous.
Palace didn't want to lose their current England International CB so put a high price tag on him. Guéhi is a modest, quiet lad* and would've been like a fish out of water in the freezing North East with the one city club. Good business by Steve Parish yet again to put off the Saudi Arabian club.
Doesn't matter that League 1 Charlton fans hate the Surrey club as they operate in a different universe.
*Reminds me of Richard Rufus when we were in the Premier and just does his job. Hopefully won't become a financial advisor 😱
Arne Slot attributed Liverpool's transformation into a team worthy of leading the Premier League to a change in attitude against Brighton, more than his own tactical switches, and it was Joe Gomez who embodied the fight, quality and character that had been sorely missing from their first-half display. The defender was introduced at the break after Ibrahima Konaté sustained an arm injury when Virgil van Dijk landed on him and was a major factor in extinguishing Brighton's threat. For a player who was left out of Slot's first Premier League squad at Ipswich, and whose Liverpool future was in serious doubt in the summer, Gomez's attitude and professionalism is exemplary. He is what a title contender needs. "I know he came from an interesting summer," said Van Dijk. "But the way he has been on and off the pitch is remarkable. He's so respected within the club and the team. He's a fantastic player and he showed it again. He was outstanding." Andy Hunter
Ignoring any potential financial gain (which we would probably waste anyway on a Kirk or someone of that ilk), as much as some people might suggest that Gomez could have achieved so much more had he moved on, the only real argument for doing so is for England recognition. However, given the modern squad game that it is, one only has to look at Maguire and Stones to recognise that you can still be picked for England even if you aren't a regular starter providing that international manager likes you - Maguire and Stones made 26 and 33 starts respectively in total in the two previous seasons whereas Gomez made 32. It's just that he wasn't fancied as much by Southgate as the other two were and he was also probably a victim of the very thing that makes him such a good player - his versatility.
Should Gomez remain for the rest of his career at Liverpool and assuming he stays injury free (and that has been a massive issue, as much so to his confidence, but it shows his worth to Liverpool that they stuck with him despite those), he will probably end up with 350 and possibly even 400 plus appearances for Liverpool, have become a multi-millionaire, played for more than a decade at the top and won countless medals but, most of all, he has the recognition from his managers, fellow players and fans of his contribution, over time, to the cause.
How many of our graduates have ever achieved all of the above over that period of time? Bonds made more appearances in top flight football but not for a top side and didn't play for England. Parker will have more appearances too and there is an argument given his PL Player of the Year achievements but how many medals has he got and Gomez will almost certainly have more caps. Konsa has less caps and unless he moves is unlikely to have PL and CL winners' medals. Whatever people say about Defoe, leaving at 16 and not playing a single first team game for us, does make the link more tenuous and how many medals did he win anyway? Is there anyone?
Fans are a fickle bunch and if he ever has a nightmare of a match any time soon, then you can be sure that Liverpool fans will be the first to react accordingly. This, however, was a few of theirs post Saturday's match. Hope he receives many more in years to come but, preferably, following games in an England shirt:
"He was nothing short of immense out there, I feared the worst at HT when I saw Ibou couldn't continue but oh my. Hats off to him."
"Proper player. Stood up and walked into the fire. We have 'defenders' that could learn a F**k ton from Joey"
"Brilliant from Joe. Since his return from injury that’s all we’ve been missing from him, a boss performance at centre back."
"Watched the highlights and it’s a shame he never scored that header.. had that gone in I’m sure the whole of Anfield would have erupted in joy for Joe…& it would have the lad wonders…"
"Joe saved us last night. I dare not think he could ever perform at this level again as a CB, this is similar to a short period he perform to top level couple of years ago. Hopefully this keep continue."
"Always makes me giggle when people are surprised when a quality player plays well"
"Only played half a game but what a half a game it was. Earned my MOTM."
"Joe Gomez - £3.5m. Harry Maguire - £80m. It's frightening."
Konate back immediately and Gomez returns to unused substitute. Liverpool look very good under Slot but football is a short career and I hope Gomez moves somewhere he is appreciated more. He is a top player and shouldn't be sat bench warming.
I also think he is massively underrated by Liverpool fans after 10 years at the club, comments above like the one I have copied below just feel a bit wonky to me.. the sort of comment you write about a kid just starting out who surprises you with a good initial impression.

Not sure I agree with that. Most Liverpool fans see him as a great player who was unlucky with injuries. If he'd stayed fit since 2018 then Konate probably isn't at the club. Konate is preferred by Slot because he has a bit more pace and presence. I think most Liverpool fans are aware he'd start for most other PL clubs
i wonder if Joe's bemch warming is due to his vesitality in he can play defence and midfield, but not goalscoring! A very handy sub to have available, maybe too handy which is why he is not risked in a starting lineup???

I've mentioned above why I think Gomez is happy at Liverpool and why it doesn't make any sense for him to move principally because where else is he going to be playing a role in a potential Premier League and Champions League team? As I've said, he started as many games in the last two seasons in the PL as both England CBs, Maguire and Stones.
The season is going to be a very long one and let's not forget that Slot started with Quansah but substituted him at half time in that very first match for Konate. Quansah has not played a minute in the PL since, started a couple of games in the League Cup (scored an OG against West Ham) and came on for two minutes tonight with the score on 3-0. Gomez remained on the bench and that suggests to me that he is being saved to return in some form on Saturday in a big game against Villa. The game has changed in the last few decades and it really is all about the squad now. Look at what Wilson did for Fulham last night coming off the bench.
When all is said and done, everything comes down to whether a player is, as I've said, happy. He is Liverpool's longest serving player and they looked after him post injuries and didn't look to off load him. That means a lot to a player and it's one of the reasons he doesn't want to leave as are the non-existent chances that the grass is going to be much greener elsewhere. As for fans, that one you quoted doesn't trump all the other references from Liverpool fans.
This is what was written post Saturday and a quote from him too:
"His performance was so good that it led the home fans to show their love for him by chanting his name after the full-time whistle. When asked how it felt to hear his name being sung from the stands he said "It’s always special. Obviously this is home for me and the club means everything to me."
That's a club he has been at for almost a decade. How many PL players are currently in that position? Only the most valued and content ones.
How old is his son , I am guessing the family are very happy and settled wherever it is he lives? He might not want to uproot the lad if he is content at home and attending a good school. He lives in Wilmslow, his house is valued at around £2.5 million!
I see what people write about the need for Gomez "to be playing week in, week out" but maybe that's not his overall motivation. These are the factors that might be influencing his desire not to move:
(1) Medals - the only place that he could have won more medals in his time at Liverpool is City.
(2) Financial security - yes he might earn more elsewhere but he only signed a new long term contract last year. That would not have been for peanuts and given that he was reputed to be on £3.9m a year prior to that, it would be a surprise to find out that he is now earning £5m plua. Value really is more important to some than price when you've earned enough to secure your family's future for life and Joe clearly isn't the sort of chap to be driven by how much is in his bank account
(3) Guaranteed first team starting place - very few clubs offer that these days, let alone a top one, unless you happen to be a van Dijk. As we've seen today not even Gvardiol is safe. Would he rather play, as he has done for the last two seasons as an important cog or as a "potential" fixture at a Palace or a Brighton for example? Because he wouldn't be guaranteed a starting place at Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, United, Villa or Newcastle for the very reason he isn't one at Liverpool.
(4) International recognition - as I've said, he has started as many PL games for Liverpool in the last two seasons as Maguire and Stones have. He made 55 appearances last season made up of 51 for Liverpool and 4 for England whereas those two made 38 and 44 appearances respectively. How many players did that, let alone for one of the top two or three clubs in the country? There's absolutely no guarantee that he would be putting himself in the international window if he moved clubs. How about a move abroad? You really have to be a Bellingham or Kane for that to prove successful. Just ask Fikayo Tomori.
(5) Fan appreciation - Gomez is loved by fans in the same way as Milner was. He is "Mr Reliable". He's the one that they see as helping the team to close out games filling in at LB, RB, CB or CDM when required to do so and did a fantastic job last season and this season too in a couple of big games - today and when Konate went off at half time against Brighton with Liverpool losing at the time. Unfortunately, his versatility is a "strength overdone" but, there again, when you're a Maguire, you aren't going to be utilised in any other than that one position. What guarantee is there that, at his next club, he won't be used in exactly the same way because that is his USP? So, back to square one at a club where he would have next to no chance of winning anything.
(6) The club having his best interests as well as their own at heart - Liverpool stood by him when he had those serious injuries. Many wouldn't have given him a new extended contract for that reason alone and treated him as a potential liability. Perhaps he feels he owes them that loyalty or, at the very least, that he is comfortable with the fact that he is valued. So much so that VVD has revealed that his best mate is Gomez. “I have a lot of friends in football, but the person I’m closest to at the moment is Joe Gomez. We’ve been through everything together here at the club. Highs and lows. We are very close to each other,”
(7) Family security - he's been with his childhood sweetheart, Tamara , since he met her on a bus travelling to and from school a decade ago. They married three years ago and have a five year old son. Gomez is religious, a big family man and has put roots down in Liverpool so it will probably take his circumstances to seriously change or something "different" to alter his standpoint.
All of that said, there may well come a time when he has to leave especially if he goes back down the pecking order under Slot but that will be when it suits him or when Liverpool want to sell him. In an age when footballers are looking for that next big move and agents are dressing that up in every imaginable way possible, how refreshing is it that a player stays at a club for a decade? We struggle to find one that's with us from one season to the next and the last one that played for us for over ten years was vilified by some supporters because of the way it all ended. £2.5m in Wilmslow is a semi detached maisonette.
Not his house but this is the type of property that approximately £2.5m buys. Not exactly a semi-detached maisonette

Probably not 😕
Joe comes back to the valley at 34 to be player coach at league 1 😱Charlton Athletic on a free.
Liverpool give Joe their best wishes after 16 years of service in Scouse land. Gomez has lost his pace but can still read the game well.
CAFC and new manager Roger Johnson intend to play Gomez as a goal scoring* Midfielder 🤔
*Joe's last goal was for Catford Puma's when he was 6

I watch Pool games quite intently when Joe plays, as it reminds me a little bit of PL life, 20 odd years ago.
He has always been a quality player and he deserves to be playing week in, week out, not plugging gaps at Liverpool.
