  • 36-2 8 overs, Bell caught in the deep.
  • And Cook promptly does the same to deep square leg.

    Pathetic.
  • 37-3, 9.1 overs. Cook caught in the deep when sweeping the part time spinner.
  • Terrible shot by Cook!
  • Terrible shot by Cook!

It's because he is such a one dimensional batsman. The top players have five different shots to every ball.

In his case, unless there is any width, he only has two. One is the forward defensive and the other is out.
  • And for the record Cook, in the last 18 months, has scored just one 50 in his last 20 ODIs and averages little more than 25 in that time.

Will the selectors be brave enough to dump him for Hales or will they wait for Cook to get a ton in a meaningless warm up game to justify his existence?

The latter I suspect. And for the selectors' benefit I would like to point out that, despite the fact he was born on 25th December, he ain't no latter day Messiah - his captaincy at times has been worse than his batting!
  • Back to the game. 70-3 off 18 overs, 15 of which have been bowled by spinners which rather says all there is to say about the pitch!
  • Morgan goes for 17 playing a nothing shot to cover. 75-4.
  • Root plays all around Matthews' first ball and is out LBW for 44.

    117-5 off 27.1 and Bopara 18*.
  • Buttler bowled by a ball that nips back for 7.

132-6 and with Woakes and the tail left to support Bopara.

  • Keep going AA.
  • Second ODI start delayed by rain - reduced to 45 overs a side. England win the toss and bat first.

21-1 off 5 overs. Ali out for 2 in the second over.

    Cook 14 off 18
    Bell 3 off 5

All out for 2 in the second over - now, that is plumbing new depths !
  • Everyone goes on about Cook and one day international cricket, which I agree with. But Morgan's average in the last ten ODIs is 17.5. I can't believe that players like Roy, Hales, Taylor and Vince are not in our ODI team. These are people who can really hit the cricket ball. We might as well be hanged for a sheep than a lamb.
  • 163-6 with just 7 overs to go.
  • Woakes runs straight passed the ball and is stumped by three yards for 15.

173-7. Bopara 49* with Tredders now in and just the 5 overs to go. If we last that long!
  • Can someone tell me what Woakes and Cook bring to this team?
  • Bopara gets his third 50 in his last four matches.
  • Bopara caught at midwicket for 51.

180-8 off 41.2 with Finn joining Tredders.
  • Finn bowled second ball so 180-9 and Gurney enters the arena.
  • Gurney bowled. All out for 185 off 43 overs.

    Dreadful stuff.

  • Good stuff. The worse this gets surely the better for us. Moeen papered over a very big crack the other day.

Totally agree. Sri Lanka will obviously win but, if they could do it in under 30 overs for the loss of only one or two wickets, there will be no hiding place.

Having said that, we've been massacred before and it hasn't made any difference to the selection policy.

Sadly that's unlikely to be the case as SL are 46-2 off 10.

Wasn't far off after all. SL won by 8 wickets with more than 10 overs to spare. Await the excuses and cliches from the England camp.

    Now to more important things......COYR.
  • How can you get the right team mentality when one of the senior coaches is Mark Ramprakash?

They are useless at cricket, but boy can they do the Tango, the Twist and the Watutsi (like my little Lucy)
  • Some good and bizarre changes for today's game. Bell, Tredders and Gurney out for Hales, Jordan and Stokes.

Good because Hales and Stokes are in albeit that Hales is batting at three. Bizarre because neither Woakes or Cook are good enough and we leave Tredders out when Sri Lanka are playing four spinners!

What should have happened imo is that Cook, Bell, Woakes and Gurney should have been replaced by Hales, Stokes, Jordan and Taylor making this the line up:

    Ali
    Hales
    Root
    Taylor
    Morgan
    Bopara
    Buttler
    Stokes
    Jordan
    Tredwell
    Finn

We then bat to nine, have three quickies plus Bopara and also three spinners if necessary.
  • Would like Hales opening with Ali and Taylor at 3 but, Given the insistence on playing Cook, that's the best batting lineup we could've picked
