Was the audience the same? You know, the blokes in boot cut jeans and wrap around sun glasses on their head and birds pretending to be into their motors?
Anything with Chris Evans presenting it has me reaching for the off button. A bit like Johnny Vaughan and Chris Moyles how he continues to carve out a career is one of lifes mysteries
I don't mind him usually - yes he loves himself but he knows what makes good TV/radio so it's usually entertaining.
That's what it should have been. They kept too much of the old format.
I thought it was ok, hard act to follow obviously, and Leblanc is an asset if they use him properly. Evans came across as untypically nervous. I expect it to improve as the characterisation develops and they start to have the confidence to do their own stuff.
Lest we forget, even Only Fools and Horses was poorly rated in its first series. Give it time.
It was a bit bleaurgh but like others have said. It's the first one so I'll give it a chance
I will add I'm suprised they didn't change more with the format though given how long they've had to muck about with it. Evans was trying to be Clarkson which whilst being understandable given his popularity is daft as he can be a very engaging presenter. I hope they use Chris Harries to do the proper reviews, his stuff on YouTube is miles better than anything else.
Top gear was never about the cars only the personalities amongst the presenters may, Hammond and clarkson made the show and made comparing cars more interesting, bbc never got that.
The content of the episode was fine, same recipe as always - just with worse presenting. As someone that dislikes Chris Evans pretty strongly I was never going to like it, but Matt Le Blanc was fine.
The problem with the 'it can never be as good as it was' argument is that I found the last couple of series were looking so tired as well. Cool cars and a staged little trip somewhere where they run into trouble... the only thing that carried it just before Clarkson & co. left was the chemistry of the presenters - because it had lost it's originality and was getting boring.
I suspect that the only thing that can save it is a revamp of format, because otherwise with Evans & Le Blanc it's just the same as it was - but worse. Viewing figures were high for the opening, watch that half and then tail off of the rest of the series.
Did find Le Blanc's facial expressions funny in the 3 wheel car to Blackpool, you could read his mind thinking, I was in one of the biggest shows of the 90s now I'm driving 3 wheelers to Blackpool in the rain with a ginger bell end. Too early to judge though.

RIP top gear!
I don't understand this at all. James May doesn't have a personality. Clarkson is a nasty piece of work and Hammond was a single-joke buffoon. How is that more interesting?

Because not everyone, necesarily, shares your opinion.

Hammond makes my teeth itch
Ha ha. Couldn't have put it better myself. The most annoying person on tv for me. Especially when you noticed the air sucking thing he'd do mid sentence. Couldn't watch him after I noticed that.
The polarisation of views on clarkson has always fascinated me, both sides seem almost fanatical about him. Say what you will about him, not many can achieve that.

I liked Matt, didn't like Chris "Jeremy Clarkson" Evans.
But gotta give it 4-5 weeks before you can really judge it IMO
Personally I would have liked it to be completely different otherwise you get the poor man's Clarkson references.

Must have missed that somewhere!!
Stick it in Room 101 with F1, NFL and NBA! Carbuncles on humanity, the lot of them.
I've found it dull for years but don't think the new lot are rubbish. The format is just old.

The worst thing is that I was totally bored by it.

I agree, can't stand Hammond, makes me want to punch the TV screen if only that would wipe the irritating 'cheeky chippy chappy' grin off his face.
