Brogib - If the UK pulled out of the EU what would happen to British citizens currently living in the EU?

Oh, I never thought of that......
Actually can you even vote from France? How does that work? And CA has a point there are 700'000 brits every year that emigrate or make the most of the free movement in the EU.
This is what I find ridiculous .. Britons living permanently overseas, presumably not paying UK taxes and having a vote in UK elections ?
If one is a UK citizen, one should have the right to vote.

Ah but you are a bit presumptuous  -)

    - I pay UK income tax, kept my house (fortunately) and keep my savings in the UK
    - I've fully paid up all my NHI contribs, so will get a UK state pension (yet no longer qualify for NHS cover!!)
    - I care about my family back home, especially my elderly Mum, and my sister's two kids who somehow will have to face the housing crisis
    - I support a football club whose welfare is threatened by the suspicious cronyism of a Have I Got News for You personality, and a couple of pornographers and their female hired hand who contribute funds to the Tory party
    - I listen to Today every morning, and PM every evening

and you reckon I don't deserve a vote on the above matters?

The world has changed, Lincs. The old borders just don't exist, except in UKIP minds.

You lose it, after 15 years away. That doesn't happen to other countries' citizens, the Swedes for example.

but there are ways round it...

Tory campaign has been very negative and lazy. Targeted Miliband which is a bad mistake - like they haven't watched PMQs!!! Johnson was even trying it yesterday on Andrew Marr show with a few low blows. The problem is the people that say Boris won that encounter are tories and they don't need convincing, everybody else had Miliband as the winner and his reputation was further enhanced. They will need to up their game significantly as they are the ones that have to win this election to gain power.

The other problem is the economy. They have to sell the hope that everybody will soon see the benefits. The truth is only 19% of the population have said they have felt a recovery. So Miliband was very clever setting his agenda two years ago. It is about living standards and whose recovery it is. The conservatives cant just tell people they are better off when they don't feel it.

Assuming they let you back in. I reckon Farage will want to pass a law barring "deserters".

This is the mother of all CL windups. The noisiest UKIP supporter on the general election thread lives in FRANCE!

I knew it was all a windup when you posted that foto of Al Murray. He's standing against Farage in Thanet on a pisstake ticket. (FKUP, isn't it?)

  • I have always worked on the principle that Brogib was on a glorious windup, he is very good at it though.

If the rest of your posts had not been so witty you might have got away with it to.

Watching the debate on the daily politics show. There seems to be more mud thrown in Yvette Cooper & the Labour parties direction than any of the other parties.
For a party that is not actually in office, I find that pretty telling.

But I always thought that the BBC was always accused of left wing bias. Both Farage and Johnson have used this line already during the campaign .Are you saying this is not the case ?

Not at all. It was an open debate with members from all parties. There was no 'selective' audience.
I remember similar debates at the last election and Labour, some might say justly, got bombarded with stick from the way they had run the country for the previous 5 years. Every man and his dog were looking to have a pop.
The Tories have not faced the same sort of flak this time around in my opinion.
But Farrage felt the audience was biased against him in the recent debate. It is refreshing to see this is not the case.
    FARAGE!

Ahh, I'm always hanging on every word from a Citeh supporter with a meaningful profession like "urban poet", whatever the crap one of those is. I'll look out for more of his pearls of wisdom in the future.

Here's the question though. Is it pronounced Farage like Garage or Farage like Garage ?

Conversely, a Labour government is much like nasty soap deposits in the sink - it only gets there if you let the scum build up.

Indeed. In 1997 the scum had built up to intolerable levels.

  • And then all the scum took all our money on their bone idle arses via the benefits system until it was all gone

Yes, it was so bad it took 13 years to get rid of it and we're still paying for it!

Yes, that's what caused the almost complete collapse of major western economies in 2008...
  • And then all the scum took all our money on their bone idle arses via the benefits system until it was all gone

For the first decade under Blair the proportion of its income the UK spent on welfare remained virtually unchanged...

    image

The total amount went up during this period and the percentage increased post-08 due to increased unemployment and falling income but Labour's record is pretty much consistent with the Tories if you compare welfare spending as a % of GDP.

Think the Election Thread has nearly run out of steam. Can see this developing into a discussion about how good Vim used to be.
