Crofts has been an inspirational skipper in the past and could provide us with some much needed experience which we have lacked a lot in the last couple of years.
Buxton 32 and now Crofts 32. Both with lots of experience but both free agents who wouldn't cut it should we get promoted. More short termism from the club?
The club is likely to bring in fees close to £8 million and get some big wages off the books.
Surely we ought to be looking to sign players aged 26 - 27 looking to go places.
I think we've seen our three "marquee" signings and looks likely that replacements for those that leave will be ageing free agents and journeymen.
Sounds very familiar to me.
24 Ajose ,27 Novak ,29 Holmes
Let's not cane Slade and his scouts picks here...
This is a mixed age group of signings.
At least we're not plucking them all from some strange Belgian club no one has heard of.
Big difference in those three "marquee signings" with age oldest 29 and two 32 year old free agents.
I think the three we have signed would have been wanted by any league one club. It was good business to sign them.
My concern is what comes next. So far we are following the pattern of each season under RD albeit now with Brits rather than Belgians.

I agree totally that all the old free-agents in the mix at the minute remind me of past mistakes. I'm worried that a few marquee singings, a few frees and a thin squad could be the way we go again - one or two injuries (imagin Bauer, Kashi and Diarra) and we're back on shit street.

What is our squad size like at the moment? Slade said we only need 22-25 in the squad didn't he? I imagine that means we wont be seeing too many more coming in and quite a few going out.
Surely we will just be in the same boat as we have been at the start of every season under this regime - thinking we could do well if only we had a few more decent squad members, especially as we will inevitably bring in some injury prone players to supplement the ones we already have on the books.
If we see ourselves entering September with a front 4 of Watt, Lookman, Novak and AJose I will be impressed and optimistic. At the moment the squad looks pretty good, but surely it'll be pulled apart in the next couple of months?
What youth players will they bring through "too-early" to boost the squad?

26 players including Muldoon
Drops to 23 if and when JBG, Tex and JC leave
Of those 23 three are goalkeepers
so 20 outfield players that include Ba, Bergdich and Cebellos for whom the jury is still out but who could do well at this level.
KAG and THD were filmed training with the U21s but are included in the 26.
Kennedy and Konsa might be able to step up from the U21s
All this talk of, say, circa £6m coming in from sales, and only only about £800k being spent, I think the club would struggle to spend millions in this division. In fact there's no need to splash out on high priced players. How much did SCP spend on that side that tore up Lge 1?
BWP was signed the season before for £150k (what an absolute bargain). Morrison - 200k, Stephens £350k, Green £400k, Haynes £75k, Wiggins £300k. Hamer we paid a fee for as well i think, and I seem to remember Leon Clarke was £50k + Benson.
Pope Dmitrovic Solly Bauer Johnson Teixeira Diarra Fox RCC THD Holmes Kashi Ba Jackson Cousins Harriott Bergdich Ceballos Ajose Novak Watt KAG
That's 22 men for the game without youngsters like Konsa, Phillips, Kennedy, Umerah, Muldoon or trialists like Buxton and Crofts. Saying we will lose 5-0 to Welling based on 2 people training with us is, quite frankly, fucking ridiculous
Anyone thinking we can drop a division and not cash in on our better players or cut costs is frankly deluded. It seems obvious to me we will make a profit on transfers this window because we have to, to pay the wages of those left behind. At least we are getting players in before the fire sale I and many others predicted would happen.
We've signed 3 experienced British players, 24 Ajose ,27 Novak ,29 Holmes signed for money and have 2 more, Buxton and Crofts , both 32 on trial with a view to free transfers. Whats not to like.
I'd have been happier if we'd had those 5 in the squad last season instead of the league of nations we signed or had on loan.
Feels to me that the squad is moving in the right direction. We new we were going to lose JBG, Cousins, Lookman and probably a few others. We are building a squad of solid British experienced pros rather than speculative foreign imports and this surely signals a change in direction, presumably lead by Slade and the new scout.

I made that same mistake - a change in direction is interpreted by many on here as you are now 100% behind the regime - you just cannot say outrageous things like change in direction or strategy - the belgium mad professor has tricked you into thinking that and you will soon come to your senses. 12 months sitting at home, doing DIY, walking around a shopping centre or generally being at the beck and call of your wife and kids will sort you out. Change in direction... never heard such nonsense.
I don't like the Regime and I think our CEO is a joke whose position is untenable, but you cannot deny that there appears to have been a change in strategy on the pitch which, imo is a change in the right direction

I have 100% faith in Slade when it comes to knowing which players to sign for L1, this is a massive difference from have foreign head coaches and network scouts taking a punt on who would work in England
And as for making 6m from sales and not spending it all, that's hardly new. When we sold Robert Lee, Webster,Minto, Bowyer etc we spent a fraction of the money we received. It's WHO you buy that counts.

I think there has been a change in operations on the pitch ie British manager allowed to pick own players from Britain.
But that is not the same as the overall strategy for the firm.
We were told by KM that the strategy was to break even while offering customers the chance to see the premier league players of the future.
We've not seen or been told anything to say that that strategy has changed. It might have but since KM can't admit she or Roland ever got anything at all wrong she won't say "we've changed" the operational aims or the strategic aims.
The other factor is that we've all been here before. Last season there were some purchases, Ba, Bergdich, Bauer, Kashi, Cebellos and Sarr and the loan of Makinok during the summer and many fans, and often the same fans, also hailed this as a fresh start, a change in strategy and a new dawn and so good reason to back the team and to shout down the so called "moaners".
Reality hit when it was clear come September that the squad was left very thin and when no replacements were sort for Kashi. We started the seasons with two (2) centre halves of whom one was Sarr which meant Diarra, much needed in midfield, played most of the season (when fit) at the back.
This season it MIGHT be different. Slade MIGHT be allowed to build a sensible squad not reliant on the untried kids or untried overseas players. Or he MIGHT not. So far, so good but there is a long way and a lot of work to go.
And remember that all that work and change is just to get Charlton back to what is a normal situation for 99% of English clubs. It's not a new, different or innovative "strategy" just a forced reversion to tried and tested methods as a result of constant failure.

Edit: Whoosh?
Another British player as well. English Manager and 3 English signing in the door already. Now if we could just get rid of the foreign owner....
