That makes no sense. Gillingham may be going nowhere, but Stevenage are a struggling L2 club with no expectations of going rising higher
Evans family are still based in Peterborough.
Gills are struggling for players and Evans has already hinted he doesn't want to work where his hands are tied.
I also sense some frostiness between manager and owner (Scally). Recently gills kick off time in the fa cup at home v Cheltenham was changed in the week leading up to the game from 3pm to 2pm. Some fans understandably kicked off about it due to short notice. I saw an interview with Scally the other day who said that he had no knowledge of it until the eve of the game and it had been arranged by the manager.

Perhaps he just senses that, on current form (one win in 11 and scored just six goals in that time) and with the squad as it is, there is every chance that Gillingham will go down. If he can keep Stevenage up he will be no worse off and be back to living nearer home

Also, as Gillingham manager you have to go to Gillingham, which can't be nice.

If he can’t use his hands, he can’t stuff his face with burgers
Quotes attributed to Steve Evans from last night on kent online re the Stevenage rumour:
“I have just been made aware of it by our media department and that is something that the chairman and the club have to speak about, not for me, I will speak to the chairman about it as you would expect.
I don’t know how accurate that is. I am a football manager, I want to win games, I want to have a chance. I don’t know if there has been an approach."

Not ruling it out is he.
Stevenage's owner is also the chairman of a food trading company (boom boom) .. and reading up, it seems that Stevenage FC despite no great on field success, is a well run business with a few odd little side lines, e.g. a children's nursery .. perhaps ol Steve can lecture the nippers on the benefits of healthy eating as a part time role, IF he gets the gig
He may have a decent track record and I suspect Stevenage fans will be delighted if he gets the job as he knows how to win promotions but he's just one of those managers I'd be absolutely gutted to see my club appoint.
Whenever I see him he is just ranting and raving on the touchline and generally just being vile to all those around him. I dare say almost all managers overstep the mark at times however there are certain managers who just seem to make a living off it and he is one of them.
He hasn't seemed happy for a while at Gillingham and his statement certainly doesn't suggest he is distancing himself from the Stevenage job.

He might as well just have said "please let me go"

i.e. I don't think there's much chance of that here.

He'll get 50% ownership of this.

Steve has got enough on his plate making this decisions
Barnsley have appointed Sweden Under-21 boss Poya Asbaghi as their new head coach following the exit of Markus Schopp earlier in November.
