  • Great comments from Jimmy Kimmel, if only more Americans thought like him.

he's probably proud of the way that everyone rallied round to help each other, just like obama, may, khan and others before them have said when atrocities occur, which this is.

But surely you should put a qualifier on that? Especially when you have 59 dead and hundreds injured in Las Vegas by an American shooter, and Puerto Rico (where he is right now I believe), an American territory with American citizens, destroyed by hurricane Maria. This is not a particularly proud moment in American history.

The standards are so low for him that we play mad libs with his vague tweets to get to a place where they're somewhat acceptable. Whereas when he wants to go after the mayor of Puerto Rico and insinuate how lazy hispanic people are, or attack major news networks, he is VERY specific.

(most people in Puerto Rico are currently without power, potable water, and cell service).

Obama cried during the aftermath of Sandy Hook and tried to do something about it...Trump tweets saying how proud he is about the state of his country. A state that allowed the pointless deaths and 100's of injuries to completely innocent people.

A normal, rational person, in a position to actually make a difference but choosing not to, might feel shame rather than pride.
he held a minutes silence at the white house yesterday, in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy i do not know what else he can do, i'm no big fan of trump i think the guy is a moron although slightly less of a moron than Clinton, but the constant comments on what he does, both on here, the news, social media becomes ridiculous.

i hope that this is a serious wake up call to america and there governments gun controls are reviewed so that we don't see this happen again, unfortunately it probably wont be no more than the last time we had a terrorist attack that would be the last.

Yes, if only the President had something he could do....

Like proposing gun control legislation in congress.

Or putting the Executive Order banning people with mental illness from purchasing guns.

Or a broader EO on background checks, or perhaps making the modifier that he allegedly used to make his AR-15 basically an automatic weapon illegal.

Or shit, even trying to make assault rifles illegal.

But yeah, a minute's silence is nice too...

And let's be honest, if the shooter had been Muslim you'd be freaking the fuck out calling for concentration camps or banning people or whatever.
as i said in the immediate aftermath. and then went on to say about the governments gun control.

    me personally or trump?

    Well, both of you really.
  • i'm no big fan of trump i think the guy is a moron although slightly less of a moron than Clinton

Really? You can argue all you like about their honesty etc but in the moron stakes Trump is operating on a completely different level.

  • English pal of mine had a girlfriend who lived in Oakland.
Guy broke into her apartment, she had a gun under her mattres.....he appeared in her bedroom doorway and she shot him stone dead!
    No further action taken.

I would say that is a justified homicide .. if she had not had a gun she could (or probably would have) been raped and/or murdered

This is an incident whereby gun ownership was a life saver. American cities are still crime ridden and many criminals are armed with guns or knives and have no respect for human life. Law abiding citizens have a right and many may feel the need to own a gun and to know how to use it.
There is little or no justification though for anyone owning a rapid fire machine gun or the like

I have friends and relations in the states, some own guns, some don't .. a lot has to do with the area where they live and their own state of mind. To the gun owners it's just like owning a necessary tool
    Exactly Lincs.
His intention was rape by the way.
How does anyone know what his intention was if he's dead?

I think Executive Orders on background checks, weapons modifiers, preventing people from mental illness from buying guns (that was already done), are all reasonable things to be accomplished in an EO.

He could champion things like assault rifle bans in Congress, as well as legislating some of the EO things listed above. Would it be guaranteed to pass? No, it would be tricky, as Obama found out. But I don't think it's impossible, and I think he'd have a far better shot at it than Obama did given the Republican Congress' desire to basically give Obama no legislative wins.

But the original question was, "what more can he do?" And the answer is, a lot.

Someone needs to have the balls to explain to the American public that the Second Amendment does not under the right to own arms.

No, John Q. Guntoter, you don't have the right to own a gun. The Second Amendment allows you to bear arms, but says nothing about owning them.

Once law-makers can get their heads round that issue, gun control becomes possible. Starting by making it illegal to pass ownership of a gun to a third party. Then massively reducing the amount of ammunition an individual is allowed. Then making private ownership outlawed entirely, and, instead, enabling guns to be leased by reputable, licensed gun clubs, who lose their licence if any of their guns is used in a crime.

Use a gun in a crime and you lose your right to bear arms. Lease a gun to someone who uses it in a crime and you lose your licence and income.

It's a start. But sadly, because the NRA is so powerful and the wrong man is in the White House, it's a start that's a long way away.

It isn't a case of having the balls, they have to work it out for themselves. All we can effectively do is show them by example that having strict gun laws is safer.

We all love football. What if it was proven beyond doubt that heading a ball gives you a massively increased chance of contracting early onset alzheimers. The logical solution would be to ban heading the ball. But many of us would resist this - even with the evidence. This scenario is possible - think Jeff Astle, but we want to protect the game we love so we, me included don't really want to know too much about it by instinct. That is how the Americans can ignore all the evidence to the point where it makes them look like idiots!

The issue isn't about safety - nobody in the gun lobby gives a f*** about that. What is more important is the right to have loads of guns with as little regulation as possible.

Only PC loony Commie bas***ds want gun control!

Heading a ball in football is part and parcel of the game and is codified in the rules. The intention is to use it to win a contest in the air, pass the ball or attempt to score a goal. The heightened risk of brain damage is an unintended consequence.

There are no unintended consequences with guns - they are designed to kill people or other living things, and that's exactly what they do.
  • Does anyone seriously think that the gun lobby in the USA gives a flying f*** about events in Las Vegas? More guns will now be sold and they will continue to argue for less regulation.

It would require almost a total wipeout of the US population before the gun lobby paused for thought.

And that would only be to think "How can we sell more guns to the survivors?"

Others have suggested practical things he could at least try in the weeks to follow. He could if he wanted sign an executive order banning the supply of the particular gun in question, as a message this has to stop, this afternoon. But he won't as we all know. I also know it probably wouldn't be much different under the other "moron" you suggest (assuming you meant former Secretary of State Hilary and not Bill). But I'd bet my left bollock that any other President would do more than Tweet a message clearly aimed at rallying their core support rather than expressing genuine empathy and support for those affected.

I'm talking about showing a bit of leadership and genuine compassion here. Not just rhetorical tub thumping about how great 'Merica is...when frankly it has shown itself recently to be in a bit of a fecking mess in reality.

in the coming weeks i hope something is done but as the massacre happened less than 48 hours ago, hes done pretty much what any other head of state done, when grenfell happened i think some were expecting builders down there that afternoon knocking up new houses, it just doesn't happen like that, maybe its an issue with the world we live in.

You're right you did talk about gun control, but as I pointed out you also asked what more, beyond a minute's silence, he could do. And I explained it to you.

On the fact that your reaction would be different if the shooter would be Muslim, I don't have to wonder, I just have to look at past statements:

"what really fucks me off is that straight away its clearing the religion/Muslim name and there renamed extremists, there not they are extremist MUSLIMS, the religion knows no peace, there never happy unless there killing someone, as far as I'm concerned the world would be a better place without the religion that is Islam, enough is enough now, we're so wrapped up trying to appease them that were soon going to be wiped out, I would like anyone to come forward now that was shedding tears for the so called refugees now we have extremists all over Europe and fully expect more of these attacks."
  • Worth remember that the second amendment is there to protect the civilians incase the government tries to overthrow them. Now It's not for me to suggest in the unlikely event of this happening the government would have tanks and planes that guns would have no effect over, but any attempt to outlaw gun overship is going to stir up this three century old paranoia. Obama tried and failed to outlaw assault rifles to the mentally ill. Trump in his campaign said how important it was to protect the second amendment.

R.I.P. to the innocent yet again.

Anyone with half a brain knows Trump won't do anything constructive. I have never seen a more self-serving disingenuous politician who appears incapable of basic empathy.

If he manages to send a tweet out without insulting anybody then it's a cause for celebration - how low have standards got?

Why anybody would take it upon themselves to defend him is beyond me - I would have to assume it was a windup.

It's a measure of the stupidity of people that they see billionaire Trump as an anti-establishment figure.

Trump standing up to his chums in the gun lobby is about as likely as Charlton winning the Champions League in the next 5 years.

    Well, both of you really.
    what a silly silly comment,

1st of all you go into one when i actually said he should do something about guns,

"i hope that this is a serious wake up call to america and there governments gun controls are reviewed so that we don't see this happen again"

but didn't let that get in the way of your lesson towards me, then you claim i would be calling for concentration camps if it was a muslim.

don't want to get into a row on here as its not the place.

for the record if you wish to personally insult me as claiming that i would call for a modern day auschwitz feel free to message me.
You're right you did talk about gun control, but as I pointed out you also asked what more, beyond a minute's silence, he could do. And I explained it to you.

On the fact that your reaction would be different if the shooter would be Muslim, I don't have to wonder, I just have to look at past statements:

"what really fucks me off is that straight away its clearing the religion/Muslim name and there renamed extremists, there not they are extremist MUSLIMS, the religion knows no peace, there never happy unless there killing someone, as far as I'm concerned the world would be a better place without the religion that is Islam, enough is enough now, we're so wrapped up trying to appease them that were soon going to be wiped out, I would like anyone to come forward now that was shedding tears for the so called refugees now we have extremists all over Europe and fully expect more of these attacks."
and did we have more attacks? yes
did i ask for concentration camps? no

did say message me independently to try and take an argument away from the thread, but that was too hard for you too grasp, not a problem i stick by what i said there's been another 7 attacks in the uk alone since that attrocity in paris.

thanks for sharing with everyone have a gold star.

You're right you didn't ask for concentration camps, you seemingly asked for the extermination of 1.2 billion people who "know no peace." Sorry to have misrepresented your statements.

I really think we need to be careful not to pigeonhole every gun owner as being an anti abortion, murderous gun nut here.
