Given how crap England's top order has been more often than not and the players that have tried and failed what does Hildreth have to do to get a go?
Could he be a David Steele for the 21st Century?
Hildreth has a very similar batting average to Foakes this season. Pope and Burns are by far and away the best averages this season for English qualified
Bairstow out, Burns in at 3 and Buttler gets the gloves. Move Root and Pope down a spot each to four and five. Can’t see any other changes as of right now.

If Jennings fails again, he has to go too.
But for who if Burns is already (presumably) coming in for Bairstow? JB’s injury may be Jennings’ saving grace for at least one more Test...

Burns for Jennings, Foakes for Bairstow (and keeps wicket)

Surely you can get both Currans, Borthwick, Roy, Stoneman and Pope in too?

I wonder if he'd be saying that if they had some t20 action coming up... :-)

Then we can talk about loaning in some Kent players to keep our championship push on track - might be the only time some Kent players are involved in a title winning team.

But, seriously, as i mentioned above , Pope and Burns are miles ahead average wise, of anyone else with a serious number of games under their belt this season (85 and 67 respectively) and Foakes has an average of 47.
I wonder how many times yesterday Joe Root looked around his field and wished he had a bowler that offered something different to mix it up and try and get a wicket.
I dunno perhaps a left arm quick. Perhaps one who is a bit shorter than all our other bowlers and so has a different release point and makes the ball skid on. We woefully lacked variation yesterday.

But then I’d drop Buttler and we’re back to the same problem. We can’t have a specialist batter coming in in the lower middle order. He needs to be doing something else so give him the gloves or drop him for Foakes.
My team would be Cook, Jennings, Burns, Root, Stokes, Pope, Buttler, Woakes, Rashid, Broad, Anderson

Another possibilty that hasnt been explored is to look at Rashids value over the 3 tests. I know AA might think otherwise but i think he's played a bit part in all 3 Tests - maybe time to get him out, get Sam in, et voila...variety plus increased strength in batting, and we just bomb them with 5 'quicks'
Unless he scores more than 50 here, i cant see Jennings in the next Test. His technique is a liability, and comes over as a walking wicket. Needs to go back and sort out his failings.

7 wickets (including a couple of vital ones such as Kohli who he has got out 4 times in Tests) @ 26.71 says he is a big part of the team.
