SG said that he knew of Steve Avory from when he'd been U23 coach at QPR and was always jealous the quality of players he had. Said Steve was very importand and a constant over the years during periods of change.
SG said that the Arsenal director of football was at the training ground this week and was very impressed with the attitude and players.
SG said this could be important as, as LB said, he's worked hard to build a relationship with Arsenal academy staff. Wants to get Nelson and Ketiler (spelling) off them next season (assume he means Reiss Nelson but not sure who the other one is or if I caught the name correctly).
SG said he told the gooner DOF about the opportunity young players have here. LB said that Lapsie and others have learnt a lot and improved.
LB was asked if he was more willing to give young players a chance as he himself got in the time very young.
he agreed and said he used to knock on Curbs door and demand to play ahead of experienced players. Said he told Curbs he should play ahead of Colin Walsh! As he told this you could tell he realised now how arrogant that must have seemed.
"if they are good enough, they are old enough"
LB said he texted Lapsie after the Sunderland game saying "you and your family should be proud". Lapsie texted back "thanks Bow, I'll always give you 100%". LB said he knows he will. He said the kids won't always play well but will give it all.
Who did we miss out on?
SG Alan Judge - really wanted him but then Brentford moved the price up when they realised there was interest.
Other recruitment
Taylor and Pratley - sat down to convince them. Said that he (SG) does all the hard work and that LB comes into tap the ball into the net (in regards of LB convincing them to sign).
LB sat down with Pratley, Taylor and Cullen.
Taylor took less in wages than offered by Sunderland, Pratley took an "unbelievable" cut in wages to come. Cullen, were not paying his full wages. Scunthorpe offer to pay all his wages but Cullen wanted to play for Bowyer being a West Ham fan.
Holmes wanted to come back and contacted but LB felt that at the time we had other priorities and that we have similar in Reeves, clarke, Fosu, grant and now Ward. At the time wanted Central midfielder and wingers. Sees Holmes as a no 10. LB doesn't like inverted wingers "they cut in and shoot, it looks good, what's that all about" Said both Holmes and Fosu prefer to play on the "wrong side". Thinks Cullen gives us more than Holmes.
SG big on getting players to be part of the club and side. EG sat next to Ward at Southend (SG rarely sees our games as he's scouting but as window closed wanted to see us play) and said Ward was really getting into it. SG took Ward into the dressing room after so he was in it and involved and was part of it. Ward and all the players talked about the great support in the dressing room.
SG also going to Belfast to watch Cullen as wants there to be a Charlton person there to remind him we're thinking about him, care about him.
(personally was really impressed by this side of SG and how he sees his role as a lot more than scouting. My opinion only but it seemed Gallen is almost the third person, with LB and JJ, in the management team.)
Part five Dugouts - Should we switch them around so you can get in the ear of the linesman?
LB said prefer to stay are they are. Closer to the 4th official who is the one who can communicate with the manager so you can get feedback from him. Ref tells him and he, 4th official tells you.
Rivals this season
LB "Not Peterbrough, they're not that good"
Sunderland, Portsmouth, Barnsley ("kept all their players but won't be as strong as Wigan or Blackburn last season") Scunthorpe. "we'll be up there".
Peterbrough long ball side, pump it long, win 2nd ball get it wide and cross it. They won't keep it up.
Steve Evens and the Peterbrough ref
Can't tell you what I said, no I really can't. Felt the ref just guessed, "none of them knew".
Support at Southend
SG: Fans brilliant
LB: "Fans don't realise the role they play, it makes a difference, some does that does give you an edge"
All I ask for is for the players to give 100%, I say to the players they have to work hard.
"The more (fans) support them, then the more they give. Maybe it shouldn't be that way around but it is"
Fosu sending off - was the ref close enough
"Difficult for TF not to react. I told him next time to stay down but I knew it's not easy to do. I've told him and I don't think he'll do it again"
Question: Did you think that was odd coming from you?
LB:"Souness told me off (for getting send off) and I thought "well I'm sure some of your tackles were worse".
I know because I've been there, I've been sent off (laughter from room) so I can understand.
Thank you very much for the write ups and look forward to any more information that is shared. Enjoyed reading them and leaves a good feeling about the club and the direction that is potentially going in with the right backing and support, Bowyer with Jackson alongside him and Gallen doing the other hard work that people don’t see, it does have the makings of a good set up with some great potential.
As much as the ownership and regime has such a huge dark cloud hanging over us constantly at the moment, I think at the end of last season and parts of this season has shown that if we manage to support the players the way we have done, Bowyer has proven that we can get results and it will help them even more. The problems at the club won’t last forever and hopefully will sort out soon, for now this team and management staff need us.
Things could get better, I feel much more confident reading those pieces now so thanks again.
Hi Sage, I've quoted you on the ref penalty thread .... and wondered what you thought about Bowyer's comments last night re the ref's penalty decision v Peterboro?
Hi Sage, I've quoted you on the ref penalty thread .... and wondered what you thought about Bowyer's comments last night re the ref's penalty decision v Peterboro?
Hi @Oggy Red, I am unsure if you meant to quote me as I couldn’t find it in that thread but I am answered your question to my best of my ability anyway.
Thanks @TelMc32 can't be 100% but think you are right.
Eddie Nketiah.
Excellent player, local lad too. Small and very quick, skilful and likes to play on the shoulder of the defenders. Only 19 and making appearances for England U21, a loan maybe in January or next season for him would be good for his development. Would be more than happy if he came here.
Nketiah has also been training with the England senior side this week, Southgate called him up to make up the numbers after some players withdrew, so that shows he's well regarded.
Has 15 goals in 16 games for the England junior sides according to wikipedia.
LB: We do. Karlan is up but in an area where if they play it short he has the pace to get back and cover.
We do that so Karlan has two players on him which means we have a completely spare player who can attack the ball so we do leave a player up, just not on the half-way line
Q: Why don't we vary the way we play the ball out, we always pass it out and don't go long?
LB: In this division teams want you to do play it long, they want to make it physical. You'll win some but you'll lose more.
We have footballers. We have physical players but we don't want to be one of those teams. We are a footballing side, all good on the ball. We work on moving the ball in training, we're not going to go long and physical.
Q: But shouldn't we mix it up more?
We do, The opposition stop you. I want them to play it up the pitch not just lump it and get 2nd ball like Peterbrough. Lots of teams play long, get it wide and cross it. That's all they can do. We can deal with the crosses.
Q: What have you learnt from previous coaches?
LB: Had a lot of international coaches.
From Terry Venables I saw that win or lose he's just say "see you on Monday" and we'd talk about the game then. I asked him about it and he said what is going to be gained by me talking to you when your adrenalin is up, you're angry or whatever.
I thought that was good so I tried it but then at Wimbledon away last year I couldn't. I have no amber, i'm either green or red. After that game I tore into them.
So I tried the talk on Monday idea from Venables but it didnt work for me.
Q: What did you learn from Karl Robinson?
LB: I learnt you can't just play one formation
It works for him but I look at it differently. We were predictable. I analyse the other team, look at turning their strengths into weakness and exploiting their weaknesses.
We don't have a set formation. You need a plan b and a plan c.
I'm not knocking Karl, he's a good coach and I learnt a lot from him. He's done more than me, he's won promotion.
LB: We do. Karlan is up but in an area where if they play it short he has the pace to get back and cover.

I'm not knocking Karl, he's a good coach and I learnt a lot from him. He's done more than me, he's won promotion.
I did hear towards the end of KR time both LB and JJ was trying to get him to adapt and was frustrated that he would not.
Q: Where will we be in two or three years time? What's the aim, what's the vision?
LB: My job is to get promotion this year.
My aim is to get into the championship and once we're there to get in the premier league. All the players want that too. They were devastated when we missed out last year.
The aim this year is top two, we're aiming high. That way if you fail you're in the play-offs. If you aim for the play-offs then 7th or 8th is seen as OK and I'm not allowing that.
SG: Vision; Difficult when you know the owner wants to sell. I spoke to the Aussies (in May). I had all sort of players in my head as they (the Aussies) said they will be attacking it. Difficult to set medium and long term plans (because not sold).
Signings/Sales
SG: We had to sell Konsa as we would have been over FFP (financial fair play) if we hadn't.
Steve Avory - Brilliant and forward thinking, not changed his job
Spoke to JJ about Lapsie. It's the opportunities that he and others get at Charlton. By not signing lots of other players this summer it gives Lapsie and others (in the academy) a chance. Lapsie would have been gutted if we'd signed lots of others and he hadn't had the chance
(Remember Bromley Addicks is a voluntary, fan run group. The people there on Thursday generously put £148 in a glass to cover our costs so feel free to press money on us if you enjoyed these notes and if you want to come along then email Tony Warran/WWTone tony.warran@btinternet.com and get yourself on the mailing list. Even you Golfie.
And if you are local-ish why not join the committee and help out. It only works if people make the effort)
SG: Not paying staff bonuses nearly cost us Cullen as West Ham were worried that there would be a problem but talked them around.
SG: Reeco going to Boreham Wood. You saw what going to Crawley did for Karlan and we want Reeco to get the same. Although after RHF played so well v Wimbledon on Tuesday Lee almost changed his mind.

@killerjerrylee chairs the meetings and @wwtone organises the venue.
And @Fumbluff put the chairs out.
Anyone local who fancies being more involved get in touch as we could do with so fresh blood on the committee.
The youth
Lots of praise for the young players
SG said that he knew of Steve Avory from when he'd been U23 coach at QPR and was always jealous the quality of players he had. Said Steve was very importand and a constant over the years during periods of change.

Much appreciated.
And now I'm hungry for ...... more, please!
I really like how open LB seems to be about his views.
Thats a proper Charlton thing to do and shows there are signs we can get back to the club we were when Roland fucks off
Question though, was anything more said about why the Arsenal director of football was there? Was it simply to check on Bielik or another reason?
As much as the ownership and regime has such a huge dark cloud hanging over us constantly at the moment, I think at the end of last season and parts of this season has shown that if we manage to support the players the way we have done, Bowyer has proven that we can get results and it will help them even more.
