  • I asume Roy,like Stokes and Buttler are being given a rest.
Brown? - I assume Brown of Worcs?
  • Parkinson is a good, brave call, hopefully he doesn't go the way of Crane (he's a better bowler tbh and probably won't)
  • Cant see that Malan is progress tbh - had his chance, and failed at the highest level.
Agree with Pope,Gregory and Sibley - they seem to be the obvious next 3 off the rank.
I get the feeling that Stokes and Archer are players who want to keep playing, especially with Stokes playing at 'home'.
Dawson...nah - simply doesnt have it at top level, so why persevere?
I'm not one for going back but Malan has had a decent year - is still young and has captaincy experience. Remember he has an ashes ton down under to his name and was dropped due to poor form rather than anything technical. He's not liekly to play if we are at full strength but as a backup in a squad where we have rested players I think he serves a role.

Dawson - well who else would you pick as backup spinner- Moeen and Rash aren't playing red ball who else is there? Bess hasn't even got in Somerset's side this year at Ciderabad. He was sent out on loan to Yorkshire for half the season. Dawson hasn't done badly when called upon and can bat.
Denly was originally called up, partially on his ability to bowl his leggies. Between him and Root they could cover some of the spin requirement if Leach was absent
Would you be happy with a bowling attack of 4 quicks (including Curran as 4th quick) and then Root/Denly as your only spinners? I wouldn't. The role of the spinner in tests is as much about holding up an end and keeping it tight to build pressure as it is about taking wickets. Both of these can take some tap and will struggle with that role. Putt too much workload on your quicks.
If the pitch isn't that conducive to spin, play 5 quicks? Stokes can then be played as a half bowler

  • England's T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand:

    Morgan
    Bairstow
    Banton
    Billings
    Brown
    S. Curran
    T. Curran
    Denly
    Gregory
    Jordan
    Mahmood
    Malan
    Parkinson
    Rashid
I can see Denly playing the "Joe Root" role in his absence, still scoring briskly but playing more conventionally, with slogging at the other end

Glad to see Billings back in, it'll be interesting who keeps wicket as Bairstow hasn't kept that much in our white ball squads
  • No Foakes? WTF. Buttler to keep? Really!
With Pope presumably as wicket keeping cover...
  • Foakes is very unlucky.
  • Delighted for Pat Brown to get a call up. Amazing how far he's gone in the last 3 or 4 years.
  • Foakes is very unlucky.
I like Foakes but he is Averaging 27 in the championship this season, hardly smashing the door down. And with Buttler almost certain to play as a keeper I don't see the point of dragging Foakes all the way to New Zealand to carry the drinks

That's why Jason Roy wasn't called up, he'd probably drop the drinks

  • Mahmood and Parkinson, both 22 and of Lancashire, have 21 and 19 wickets respectively in Division Two.

Can't recall when taking so few wickets (in Division Two at that) has been enough to get a call up. But then they do both play for Lancashire and can't help thinking that had they been at Worcestershire their names would not even get a mention in dispatches!

very odd selections and totally devalues the idea of players being selected on county form .. how many Essex players made 'the cut' ?

Picked on promise presumably, though those stats are a bit worrying

Podmore and Milnes for Kent have both taken 50 wickets this season in Div 1, and nobody is suggesting them for England
Quite - not forgetting that other "youngster" who picked up 50 wickets for Kent too. He's been showing a lot of promise for a long time.

Oh god, dont keep going on about Stevens.

`BTW, did Stevens play for Derby in the final on Saturday_

Trying to think how many Essex players are of the standard... I mean Westley wasn't, bopara and cook are too old, Browne as an opener? Not consistent enough. Only person left likely to play for england is maybe Porter, but I have some doubts (though he'll be a county legend).

There was something in what Bayliss was saying the other day that English pitches aren't conducive to producing bowlers with real pace who can extract something from dead pitches. Medium pace seems to be king, but won't trouble international batsmen consistently

Funnily New Zealand (especially in November) is somewhere where medium pacers will be dangerous! New Zealand have had a few dobbers in the past, and Darren Stevens would love those conditions  :)

    No.

Not any more, NZ uses drop-in pitches these days and they are as flat as a tack.

Tests there are generally much higher scoring these days.....apart from when we bat obviously.

  • Glad they have dropped Bairstow, he has needed a rocket up his arse for a while now, as his test form has been woeful over the last couple of years.

To average 35 with his ability is very poor, as after he made those runs in SA a few years ago, I really thought he would crack on to become a top class player - but he has gone backwards.

Same as Buttler needs some runs on the board as well, as to average 33 after 36 tests is pretty poor for a guy with his talent.

We need to develope some red ball specialist batters (which will of course take time), as this obsession with all-rounders has left us exposed.

The Professional Cricketers' Association has announced their nominations for the Players' Player of the Year title for 2019.

On Wednesday 2 October, the PCA will announce whether Essex spinner Simon Harmer, Gloucestershire all-rounder Ryan Higgins or Warwickshire batsman Dom Sibley has been awarded the title of runner-up to Ben Stokes.

  • Gary Kirsten looks set to get the job.  Thoughts?
  • South African and notably dour as a player, so probably a Flower-esque disciplinarian who won't enjoy any 'individuals'. Get ready for Efficient Well-Drilled Unit England. Unfair?
  • I just want us to make someone like Steve Harmison coach. I want chaos.
  • I am kind of repeating what has been said, but I hope Roy has only been dropped to give him a rest. Agree he hasn't really done enough to get back in the test side, but 20/20 and ODI you would think he should be one of the first names as he showed in the world cup.
  • Did well with India. Interesting that he has stepped down from previous major roles due to family commitments, as England will be a full on role
  • Had talked myself into the position of having a Manager type role (Stewart?) overseeing the side in all formats and individual coaches (Colly/Silverwood) taking the side for different series etc.

But Kirsten wouldn't be a bad call.

My son has been coached by him - needless to say very professional but both personable and approachable. Was a gutsy opener and hopefully will use his experience to bring on the likes of Crawley, Sibley et al
  • Kirsten was a great test batsman. Loads of experience, would be a great addition tbh.
