In football it's a week, but i don't believe there is an actual time stipulated in cricket. Solly is out for 2 games after an innocuous clash of heads but Smith could play after being hit by a cricket ball travelling at close to 100 mph
Hmm.........
Perhaps Steve Smith can play RB for us on Wednesday!
My view from a friend of a friends apartment balcony. Lovely. Had sky sports on just behind us so best of both worlds.
Thought we played it pretty well. Batting and bowling. On another day we would have won that but it wasn't to be. Happy we gave it a real good shot and tried to make it happen. Definitely sends a message ahead of the 3rd test.
If I was being overly critical I really felt that Bairstow and stokes could have started to kick on 3 or 4 overs earlier. It could have given us just a couple more overs to bowl at them. Probably wouldn't have made much of a difference in the end.
Roy dropping Head was massive. If he had taken that we would have won. The overs lost at the start of the day would have been enough to force it.
Take nothing away from Head and Marnus they played it very well and weathered a real storm from archer at one end and Leach making it spit at the other.
Denly catch incredible but what a terrible shot from Paine. Really not the captain playing the situation.
I felt Archer overbowled. Root gave in to the temptation to keep him on but his pace noticably went down as the day went on. Given woakes record on this ground and Broads class we should have used them a bit more and let archer bowl shorter spells but at full tilt. Need to be sensible and Mr overuse him.
Root catch to get Marnus. Absolutely the right decision. Due to foreshortening of the lense (a concept I have read about but don't really understand - it's something to do with when you have a small angle shot from a wide angle camera and then zoom in a long way and show it in ultra slow mo) these ones always look like they have bounced. They always cause a bit of an uproar amongst fans and media but the umpires always give them out. Because - they have had training on this from the tech guys and know how it works.
Concussion test is interesting. In football it's 7 days out no questions asked. Sky sports said he would have 5 days of continuous assessment from the day of the incident which takes him up to the day before the next test. I suspect he will play.
The Root catch / foreshortening pics is an interesting one. Sky did a thing on this a few years ago. Nick Knight (I think it was) took a few very low catches & filmed all the angles. It was shown that even though he cleanly caught the ball the front on shot seemed to show the ball bouncing first. Since then I've been convinced that if it looks like the fielder has his fingers under the ball then it's a clean catch, no matter what the front on view looks like.
One other thing on the last day, I thought Leach bowled better than Lyon.
Crucially in both innings Leach didn't leak runs, so that even if the pitch isn't turning you can use him in the Ashley Giles role to plug an end, something which Moeen in the last couple of games wasn't able to do.
Lyon is a good bowler, but picks up most of his wickets because batsman underestimate him. Think we respected him and must’ve practised playing off spin a lot, which severely dulled his impact.
I can imagine Australia may well bring Starc back in to their eleven now, fight fire with fire, especially as Headingly is supposed to be a faster, harder pitch than Lords.
"They that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind" (Hosea 8:7).
Cummins and Starc have been attempting to terrorise English batsmen for the last two series, in this they have succeeded to a large extent. England now have Jofra Archer in the team meaning the game has changed, things have equalised. (Cummins bowled several consecutive bouncers at Archer, not wise.) It is never nice to see a batsman hit a sickening blow on the head. Steve Smith has been taunting the England bowlers with his antics at the crease, waving his bat towards fielders and bowlers in a cavalier fashion, generally behaving like an arrogant little punk. Perhaps being hit on the arm and the nut, two VERY nasty blows, will temper his arrogance and make him a little more amenable towards opponents and when captain, encourage him to reign in his bowlers when they attempt to injure and intimidate opposition batsmen who are unable to reciprocate. Archer is well able to reciprocate and the Australian batsmen and bowlers should by now be well aware of this. Amusing to read in the papers today that Australian pressmen and officials are accusing English fans and spectators of unsporting behaviour in booing the 'sandpaper boys', especially Smith. Never shy in coming forward, Aussie fans and pressmen have been antagonising English cricketers for decades. Now the boot is on the other foot, they can't deal with it. So far as I am concerned, the nasty little trio of blatant ball tampering cheats should be booed for the rest of their careers.
I expect Smith will play anyway, but i wonder if they win the toss whether Australia will put us into bat first and therefore give him another day (well let's hope we can bat all day) to recover.

Sounds as if the final decision will be made by the medical experts - and we all know how cautious they will be.

I thought Broad was very wasteful early on.
Nah, thats the major part of his armoury - let Broad and Woakes pick up the pièces from the other end and aim at the stumps.
And, also, he still took 5? wickets , nicked behind, and lbw.
But, keep doing what you are doing coz its clearly rattled the Ozzies big time.
Let me just say, i was hugely impressed by Labuschagne - after taking that blow 2nd ball, and to play like that - very gutsy and impressive.

Nope - not us.
England pick an unchanged side. A final chance for Roy and Denly I imagine
Is Woakes fit? They seem to be underbowling him at the moment, and I keep hearing about a little niggle, without ever being told what the problem is
