According to Wiki, Hemed's contract with Brighton expired this summer.  He is a free agent.

Wiki is wrong then as they activated a year extension clause keeping him under contract until 2020.

Brentford sound like they didn't plan the sale of their top striker too well. Sold him and spent the rest of the week being rejected for a replacement

So now queue the rumours that he is unhappy, does not want to play, etc...

Does seem unlikely he would have refused so much ... he has no chance of getting that in January.

Kayal would be the best midfielder on the squad but his skill set is similar to field and Cullen. We would be pretty reliant on the attacking midfielder (chuks, Williams, Chelsea lad) and the strikers for scoring opportunities

Why ? Only five loans allowed in the 18 not squad. Injuries, suspensions , tactics and form could all impact on who is included in the 18

If as appears likely we have kept Lyle (rejecting big offers) and signed Hemed, Kayal, Leko, Field (and Cullen yesterday) it is no exaggeration to say it is the most sensational deadline day in Charlton history.

This, I don’t want Morgan or Lapslie going out on loan I rate both of them enough to have an impact.

Bowyer has said Morgan is a great technical player but not ready for the Championship - he needs to first expand his all round game.

Playing for the U23s won't advance him at this stage.
He needs to regularly play 1st team games for the right club and gain vital game discipline.

Hence Bowyer wanting to loan him out.
