Both Solly & Purrington are decent full backs, but they are not wing backs. Oshilaja is miles better going forward than Solly will take on his full back & puts in great crosses from near the byline. Again JFC is better going forward than Purrington & obviously can cross a ball.
Just depends if you want a defender first & an attacking player 2nd or if going 3 at the back can afford to have a'less defensive player (although Oshilaja is probably on par with Solly in that dept).
Just noticed Bonne’s flick on in the build up to what turned out to be his goal. Did well to turn it around the corner first time and then he made sure he was in an area where any loose balls would fall at his feet.
He’s not just a good finisher, he has an instinct for being in the right place at the right time.
Bilic was dirty as a player and he is dirty as a manager in charge of a dirty team.
I remember the 1998 World Cup Semi when Croatia played France. Bilic played that night and he got Laurent Blanc sent off with his over reaction. That denied a chance for Blanc the chance of playing in his biggest game as a player.
All managers are biased, it is part of football. If there is a decision that can go one way or another, as a fair number can, you feel aggrieved it doesn't go your way. Bilic is doing a decent job there, I think Bowyer is doing the best job of all here, given his budget.
I don't see Sarr as more than a deputy CB in the Championship. Like the guy but still needs to add some grit and nastiness.
I see what you're saying and I agree with the but about nastiness although he is getting more into that. Hes never gonna battle in the same way that Pearce or Lockyer do but he adds something different.
I'm very much in the horses for courses camp. Some games suit Pearce more (Millwall for example) others we want Sarrs ability on the ball at the back.
In a back 3 Sarr is nailed on first choice fir the left CB role as it needs to be someone comfortable bringing the ball out. In that system Pearce is competing with Pratley for the middle of the 3 role. In a back 4 I generally think the pairing of Pearce an6s Lockyer is top drawer, but certain games will call for Sarr.
He adds something different that none of our other centre backs can. Lockyer and Oshilaja are good on the ball and can put a decent cross in but they don't have the vision to spot a run that Sarr does and they don't have the ability to play a lovely cross field ball or through ball or chip over the top that Sarr does. Just look at our first goal against Derby and you'll see that.
For Millwall I would have Pearce over Sarr especially as I can guarantee bow will go with a back 4 for that game and it will be the right call. That pairing will not go down without a fight.
Im not criticising because we had Leko, Taylor and Hemed out but Solly and Purrington just aren’t the types of full backs who can play wing backs. Admittedly it was West Brom away who are a good side but thought both were below par. It’s definitely not eithers favoured formation but yes we were limited with our options.
Actually the performance from Solly was the sort of slightly below average performance I thought we would get this season but I have been wrong and he’s been very good. Purrington just back from injury so they should both be let off.
Thought Cullen was our best player, Gallagher and Pratley yet again put in shifts. Oztumer played well first half but tired quickly. Thought Bonne was left isolated and actually didn’t play that well. But he proved he can be a poacher by getting the goal and he’s continuing to surprise. Really pleased for him.
On another note, Sarr rarely seems to play well in a back 3. In theory should suit him but just doesn’t seem to bring the best out of him.
Decent point but we’re going to struggle a bit without Williams. Aneke was better then on Wednesday but I’m not sure on him.
Good point about Bonne. I thought he worked hard but had little to go on. But yes he absolutely has that strikers instinct. Some have it and some don't.
I always defended Parker last season but I don't think he had it. Watch the replays of the winner at Wembley. Cullen puts the cross in and he is in a decent position. Then watch him. Bauers first shot (header) is blocked. He stands there with his hands on his head. Taylor and William's follow it up hoping to get a rebound. Parker is unmoved on the penalty spot when the second shot goes in. He didnt have the instinct.
Bonne has it and that really is most of what you need. With good coaching and hard work the rest of your game can improve.
Great result today. As an aside watching SSN reminded me of what a bell Clinton Morrison is. Of all the ex-pros out there how the hell is he on the telly?!
He may not last on TV. Jeff Stelling gave him a rollocking for using the a similar word that starts with a B.
Sorry, didn’t see that. Did he use that phrase to describe the sending off?

Oshilaja was brilliant getting forward in the Forest game, but was pretty average in his most recent 2 games (Wigan and Bristol) contributing no more than Solly as an attacking threat. Matthews is the player who will potentially be a better attacking wing back. If he can stay fit.
Not getting thr criticism for Purrington. He does the basics and he does them very well. Being a fullback in Bowyers system is tough - you get no support and are expected to have immense levels of fitness in order to be able to get up and down the flank particularly when we play a back 4 as there is more responsibility to be in position. The fact that he is always at least a 7 shows he does a hell of a job in a tough role. Bear in mind he hasn't had the luxury of being rotated like our right backs have
I really think this whole "not good going forward' thing has been overdone he gets in good positions and has reasonable left foot. Doesn't have massive pace or trickery but if he did he would be a winger. Has enough bout him going forward in this system to do well imo.
Sorry if it's already been mentioned as I haven't read the thread yet. Just watched the highlights and Ferguson of West Brom makes no effort to correct the ref when his team mate is mistakenly sent off. He just seems happy to crack on and let someone else take it.

Parker had about as much goal-scoring instinct as Sam Bartram, he tried hard but I don't recall him ever having a shot on target!
I recall Parker having two similar clever flicks in different games with his right behind the left. I think one was blocked the other saved by the keeper. Sure there were more conventional ones. Perhaps we can call on LL for clarification.
Of course I'm obsessed! I play up the obsession for show, of course, but I do love the guy. I'm a fan of all our players but Naby manages to combine a few aspects (derided at first, great footballer, slightly unpredictable, completely lovely human) that bring out my fandom most of all. You can see by how the North Upper salutes him that he's a legend in the eyes of many. Also one of our longest-serving players!
You'll also notice that I criticised him four times in that post. I'm not blind. But I like it when he's in our team as I know it means we'll not only defend solidly but also try to play enterprising football.
He's easily Championship level, of course - anyone should be able to see that.
Despite all your bollocks, he was the weak defensive link yesterday. He passed to them about 4 times and was fortunate our better players saved his blushes.

I suggest you go back & watch the highlights of the Bristol City game. Oshilaja put in 2 or 3 brilliant crosses from close to the byline & was in their box a lot of times teasing their full back. Unfortunately this is not part of Solly's repertoire. He is a great defender but he is not confident attacking a player or lacks the skill to get past an opponent & put a cross in. I'm not knocking him as a player....just that he is not a wing back.
Sarr has his pros and cons. With time and space he is very effective at defending and creative going forward. When surrounded by opposition players he struggles and panics.

Thats the highlights for you
KillersBeard on VP commentary was saying that Ferguson went up to the ref saying the red should have been for him
You see Ferguson walking away and getting back into position on the highlights - Yet thats a good couple of minutes after the red card has even been given so imagine he was doing that thinking that the referee wouldnt reverse the decision

Love Naby as a player but he does seem to struggle sometimes when put under pressure. Goes from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Reasonable extended highlights on Quest showing some of our other chances. West Brom also had other chances to score, a couple of very smart saves from Phillips. Cracking result!

Didnt feel as though Quest showed enough of our chances
i.e. Watching live I thought we could have scored four before half time quite easily - Instead all the highlights showed were Oztumer's pass to Bonne and the Johnstone double save
Solly's effort where he ghosted into the area was one I was really surprised that got cut as dont know how it drifted wide
Same with Livermore's challenge on Gallagher in the first minute, felt Quest could have talked about that in the contentious decisions as a red card in the first minute would have changed the whole dynamic of the game as for me a red card for a Defensive Midfielder will probably impact a team more than a Left Back would

In terms of his defending (when they were attacking him) he was almost impeccable. Defending and passing are two different things. Also your point is misleading too - he only passed to them in a dangerous area once, in midfield once, and there were a few long balls to their keeper, and every defender does that. Lockyer hit a couple out of play too.
Purrington’s place in our hearts will be guaranteed thanks to his contribution to our promotion, especially his Wembley goal. But I’ve never thought he was anything other than a “steady Eddie” Lidl purchase. Nowt wrong with that but expectations need to be realistic. He’s a good lad.
There's a very good reason that Purrington was brought back in the summer - Bowyer appreciates what Purrington brings to the defence. Purrington keeps a good shape and anchors the defence (like Chris Powell used to do), stays calm and composed, and provides a platform for the more talented to do their stuff.
Depending on the gameplan, Bowyer has even worked on him to get forward more often - more adventurous on the overlap, decent crossing ability and ghosting in on the far post, which resulted in his Wembley goal.
Recently the player had soldiered on playing with an injury which obviously affected his game; And after best part of a month missing, was rushed back at West Brom, to play the full game without match fitness.
It might not have been his best performance. But like Stevie Brown, he never lets you down.
