Very good positionally but last few games he's looked very uncertain on the ball. Lots to work on still.
Last few games he’s been MotM, or near it.

He was nothing other than superb today. If it weren’t for him and AMB, it would have been 4 or 5-1 which would have been a fair reflection of the game.

Lucas Ness is a really good prospect but he did make a shocking pass back which should have resulted in 3-1 but Inniss made the tackle.
That happened about a minute after I said to my mate that he’s yet to make a major defensive blunder since his breakthrough. Sod’s Law.
But what 20 year old inexperienced CB finding his way in the game doesn’t ever make a mistake like that? It only takes the ball to bobble for a pass like that to go astray. If you watch live Premier League matches you’ll see defenders on 40k a week screwing up occasionally, so a fella allegedly on £490 a week isn’t going be perfect.
We do seem to love to go OTT about players’ mistakes at Charlton. It’s almost as we’re waiting for them to happen. Penney on his debut had a difficult first half, but there were people around me writing him off after 15 minutes.

That back pass was his only mistake today , another good performance. A great prospect
There was the hospital pass to Penney very early in the game which resulted in that fantastic save from AMB to deny Charles - I'm a massive fan of Ness though, now is the time for him to learn and make these mistakes, especially if he's an asset next season

This^ and he should’ve stopped the fella getting a ball in from out wide for their winner before Innis cocked up and so should Penney albeit with a tackle from behind, just take one for the team lad! Having said all that Lucas is a great prospect but will make mistakes along the way as he learns his trade.

You are being cheeky James about Ness but I agree with your comments about Penney. Tough debut and he needs supporting not slagging off.

Of course he is learning and my answer was in response to 'Stop shouting' who said Ness was nothing short of superb. I prefer our supporters to not turn our young players into superstars while they are still learning their trade.
Great start for Lucas at Charlton but after seeing Mason Burstow score a few goals but not link up that well with colleagues, yet still get his move to Chelsea's U21's I would rather see our player make steady progress.

I expected Deji to make a big breakthrough this season but Ness has got ahead of him and has grabbed his chance.

I would like to think Daniel Kanu will make the 18 man squad as Stockley and Aneke appear to be out the picture for different reasons.

Much rather him and O’Connell together than Inniss. Had enough of Inniss cock ups costing us points. Tough game for Ness up against Charles (what a proper striker he is!) but thought he did well

He had a couple of wobbly moments today but I’m still impressed overall.

Have watched Ness more closely than any other player because my son knew him at school. As stated above he had a few shaky moments today, more than against Man Utd, but agree it’d be good to not get carried away. He’s got a level head on his shoulders anyway. .
Think Mitchell might be the next to break through.

Was about to post same. Hospital pass was the exact phrase I used at the time but my overall feeling about Ness is also summed up nicely in your last sentence.
  • Ness is okay but a work in progress. He still doesn't look confident in possession to me.

I think he’s excellent. Looks a real Charlton player. The sort we would stick with back in Curbs and Gritt days when we didn’t have a pot to p in, who then became integral parts of our success.
  • Players with 500 odd games under their belt still make mistakes - Harry Maguire is a good example. For a young lad with only around a dozen or so appearances to his name he is a cracking prospect. For the older ones amongst us, he reminds me of Peter Reeves.
  • Would like to see him on the right side CB alongside O’Connell. We would lose Inniss’ height but O’Connell is a miles better defender and very good on the ball.

Now the most important player to keep fit/in form in our squad?

Nice assist today. Hopefully we’ll see more players finding space like CBT did which makes those passes possible.

The boy is mustard! Thought Leaburn would be the next best thing but Ness is a player!

Since I saw him against Cheltenham I've been of the opinion he is our best centre back. Hopefully we can build around him rather than sell

Quality young player and, unlike Leaburn, someone I feel we can realistically hang onto.
  • Ive always liked him and commented on here a couple of years ago that I thought he was a better prospect than Elewere. I also think that Barker could come good. He is playing every week now at Wealdstone in the conference ( same level as Torquay) and they are doing OK. I fancy he could be a Stuart Pearce kind of full back !

Think Dobbo is not a foregone conclusion as POTY this season
  • Ness 1st for January, AMB second

I can't imagine many people would have expected that a few months ago!

Oh gawd, poor lad. Why do we specialise in picking up unique and nasty injuries!

It's a nasty area to injure, with little blood flow to the area meaning a slow recovery.

Fingers crossed that early diagnosis is incorrect.

5 months to the start of the new season. Under 4 months to pre-season training.

Good time to get any injuries sorted seeing as we should now be safe. But just know he'll be out until Oct time.

Should release him, make him retire, jog him on...

Poor lad just when he had cemented a place in the team as well.
