40 games in and I still can’t get excited about this team. They’re more organised and don’t seem to be as bad as defensively as they were under Bowyer, but it’s excruciating to watch even when we win, or in this case, don’t get beaten.
For want of a better analogy, I think the chance of getting in the play offs is like a doctor keeping a sick patient alive. We keep getting medication as a result of the other teams in and around us slipping up. Granted, we’re unbeaten over a run of games, but it’s very different to two years ago, the year before that and the run to the final in 98.
Today, I thought our attack was shown up to be lacking talent and skill. I just never thought we looked like scoring, even when they tired toward the end. For me, personally, let’s just put the two pillow of the head of the patient and bring this season to a peaceful end.
Absolutely spot on. The sooner this season finishes the better. Roll on next season with a better squad and let's go again.
But this season, we've very much still got a decent chance of getting in the playoffs. If we do, we could even be promoted.
Knowing full well we've a rebuilding job in the close season whatever the division, if we take the opportunity ....... surely, rather thanrebuild for another season in the Third Division, it's better to rebuild in the Championship?
I dunno, just my opinion.
100% mate, old age must be getting to @blackpool72 it has to be better to rebuild after being promoted.
First alcoholic drink since November last night. So had a mild hangover to contend with. Add into the mix that turgid borefest and the incessant, repetative droning from Steve Brown its no real surprise that I fell asleep twice during that.
Lack of options from the bench was an issue. Not sure what Shinnie has done wrong and Gilbey right?

One is contracted to us the other isnt.
They're both contracted to us... Shinnie's contract just happens to expire at the end of the season
He's a Charlton player though, we signed him permanently from Luton in February
It was a very good performance again from the boys .. think Ipswich shocked us the way they started but once we got to grips with their system we controlled the game and second half only one team in it ... Stockley should have had two and Ipswich were very lucky to keep 11 on the pitch ...
JFC and Gilbey very good in mid .. but our problem playing this system is no one close enough to Stockley the two wide-man were to far away .....
But this is a game would have lost few months, so if you can’t win the game make sure you bring home a point .. that’s why it’s a good point
Is it just me who thinks on the ball Watson is really decent and underrated .
Watson has an eye for a good pass, knows when to keep it simple and reads the game well. Good positional play and reading of the gameplay also.
He made a difference to our ball retention and passing when he came on. But your saw his slow feet earn him a booking today .... it was a poor 1st touch but no longer quick enough to recover it.
It was a terrible match and we were lifeless for 65 minutes of it. It's not 'negativity' to point that out, it's reality!
If you want to sit there and clap because in the grand scheme of things a point is a good result, that's fine, but this is the post-match thread and if people want to speak the truth about the match itself, you don't get to just label truth as negativity.
I commented earlier that I was surprised at the level of negativity.
In light of your comment, how about expressing it as being surprised by the downbeat feeling in here?
We are still in a decent position and have everything to play for. Chin up

What I meant was Gilbey will be here next season- Shinnie probably not.
I like what The Red Adder is building. He has chosen who he feels is the best 11/12, and chosen his system. These players at last know what they are supposed to be doing, and are laying a foundation for other players to slot in. One or two changes per match maximum may be made in the upcoming matches, and these players will have no doubts about their role in the team. The manager is therefore giving us the best possible chance of promotion this season with what he has available.
If he fails this time around, I think next season we will see what he really wants, and I am confident that he will succeed.
A dreary game in which we were slightly the better side, without really deserving to win
While Bowyer made far too many changes in personnel and tactics, Adkins to me is going too far in the other direction, and as a result we're becoming predictable. The same formation 3 games running with no changes of shape to give the opposition something to think about. EVERY corner aimed at Inniss at the far post.
I'm puzzled by the lack of subs too. It's not just about fresh tactics, it's also to give fresh legs and preserving players for Tuesday. Gilbey definitely faded, and how long can Stockley keep playing full 90s as a battering ram lone striker before he pulls something?
I wasn't happy with the bench before the match anyway, a striker that he clearly doesn't rate, 2 non pacey midfielders and 3 defenders - why do we need 2 centre backs and a RB on the bench? How many times do teams EVER bring on 3 defenders as subs, as opposed to changing 3 midfielders and attackers? Baffled why Morgan wasn't on the bench or someone from the U23s, as we had no pace and energy on the bench at all.
Everything today was a bit mediocre really. The ref was rubbish, and even the camerawork wasn't as good as it normally is.
It may not be pretty to watch, but we are becoming a bit more efficient and a bit harder to beat, just at the right time of the season.
In Bowyer's last three games, two wins and a draw, all against lowly opposition, we averaged 58% possession, with 11 shots on target from 41 (27%). Our opponents had 9 shots on target from 20 (45%) In Adkins first three games in charge (not counting Wimbledon, as it was Jacko's team), all against top half opposition, we averaged 41% possession, with 11 shots on target from 27 efforts (42%). Our opponents have managed 12 shots on target from 33 efforts (35%).
To me, our better shape and organisation has yielded (roughly) 15% more shots on target for us and 10% fewer shots on target against us, all against better placed teams and with 17% less possession per game. Ugly but effective, whereas Bow's teams were ugly and chaotically inconsistent. We have a better than 50/50 chance of making the playoffs if we continue, or even maintain this improvement. If we do make it into the top six, I'm not sure any of the other three teams will see us as an easy touch.
Adkins may not be making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but he is at least making a purse. (This season, and for the latter half of last season) Bowyer had a sow's ear but didn't have a fucking clue what to do with it.
It’s stressful viewing cos we’re so close but I fear there won’t be any cigar . It’s frustrating just watching Gilbey, DJ, Millar, run in to the oppo defender or lose the ball cheaply and weakly time after time , Stockley flicks on no one near enough . We’re just gonna be shy and I never fancied us to win yesterday we’re just too punchless in front of goal . Ipswich flew out the blocks but once we weathered the storm we didn’t quite have the guile to break them down and they were there waiting to get beat .
As usual with every Charlton matchday the Valley Pass was the highlight with Morts , Benty and Minto making me flick my Charlton custard everywhere although it has to be said that was the worse directing with shit replays when action is taking place and appalling camerawork for some time . you just know it’s some unwashed pisshead student someone who was in the pub smashing back jaegerbombs on Friday night , they were all over the oche , crap .
don’t think we’ll make the play offs Oxford or Pompey to pip us and with us playing some tough games.
Not surprised really, our good mini run had to end at some point.
As we have discussed on here before the lack of a genuine goalscorer is going to be a real problem for us - and that’s what is happening.
With a Lyle Taylor or BWP in the team we probably win the game 1-0 but we are playing one striker and two wingers with mediocre goal scoring records.
Still, another clean sheet bodes well for the rest of the season and we still have a reasonable chance.
A draw against Ipswich hasn't ended our good run, it's continued it. Unbeaten in nine.
Yes, I think we should have won but with Aneke and Washington out we and Ronnie seemingly out of favour, we will struggle to score on occasions. I think Adkins emphasis is on keeping clean sheets as much as anything and we did.

Don’t blame the cameraman blame whoever was doing the live mix , there were plenty cameras their to cover the action

The director sometimes stayed on the close up camera rather than the wide shot for too long, and a couple of times the wide shot camera lost the ball, which it shouldn’t. And at least twice they were on a reply while a corner was taken, which was poor. So both at fault I’d say.
Looking at other sides fixtures it is still an enormous ask for us to make the play offs.
Oxford could quite conceivably win all 4 or certainly 3 of their remaining games (74/75 + better GD)
Pompey you’d expect to win at least 3 of their 5 (min 74 +GD)
Lincoln have a potentially tricky run but morale back up again now. Only 2 wins from their 6 puts them on 75 +GD, burton away, hull home and posh away next before us. If they don’t win any of those 3 and then we could beat them they may still be catchable.
Blackpool have a favourable run hard to see them not getting at Least 3 wins from 6 (min 77 +GD)
4 wins from our last 6 would leave us on 75 with inferior GD - that would be a great end to the season but I’m not convinced even that would be enough. I think 4 wins/12 points is the minimum required, but we may need even more points on top of that.
we need Aneke back, stockley is good at what he does what is not a goal threat other than from set pieces.
only saw the first half hour but u would have thought switching to 442 and introducing schwartz and shinnie at least for the last 15 might have been the way to go but the comments i heard was that we came on strong in the last 15 or so anyway? just don't get the feeling this is a promotion season but will be a bonus and losing to ipswich would have killed us so a draw and portsmouth loss keeps us in the hunt of that bonus so not a do or die game anyway
That was awful I want my £11.50 back Apart from the first 15 minutes when we weren’t playing Ipswich were dogged but as poor as any rabble we’ve seen Absolutely there for the taking Tough to beat a side when barely 8 or 9 of your team choose to be involved for most of the game. Gilbey DJ and Millar just about managed an hour of effort between them Gilbey contributed during his cameo but the other 2 not so much Referee was embarrassing booked Dozzell after a string of minor fouls then let him off a blatant handball AD’s face told us he knew a red card should follow but no the wanker in the black bricks it and lets AD get away with everything for the remainder of the match Only subbing Pratley was bizarre Saving him for Tuesday fair enough but we were toothless against piss poor opposition Almost any change was worth making especially with 3 chumps achieving naff all Odd
One thing we have learned this season is that chasing a game isn't a strength. The reason, IMO, we do so much better away is because we ensure we are solid, have a threat and we let the home team make a mistake or open up. At home, we feel more of an onus to force things and teams do what we do away, to us. A solution is to play at home in a similar way to you play away. The issue is the away side may not be as open as they would be at home.
Given the league situation, I would have expected Ipswich to view yesterday as a must win game. Instead, I think they viewed it as a stop the rot game and they have pretty much given up on promotion. So it meant a dour game with few chances. I think it was a major issue for us that we had two key forwards out so our ability to step up a gear was limited. We were crying out for Aneke for the last 20 minutes.
We are in a situation where we have to chase the points, not opponents. 74 seems a decent target and to get it we are looking at 3 wins, 2 draws and a defeat. We have some tough games but it is better to go into the play offs on a run. Sunderland have a real issue as logic would say to them to rest players, but they really need to find a run of form to take into the play offs with them.
We have gone from 1 win in 10 form and losing to Burton to 9 matches unbeaten with 7 points from 3 games against teams around us, jesus christ you would think we had lost to Greenwich Borough.

Excellent post. Think we probably came up against side yesterday who were playing for pride and nothing else.Adkins was worried about going for the win and leaving ourselves open for the counter. Ipswich would have probably just kept to the same formation and grounded it out for a point.
Not what you expected from a team on their last possible chance of making the play offs.
Not major fussed we didn't win as Sunderland was a real bonus of 2 points. Simply have to get 6 points minimum from our next 3 games. We then go into a very tricky May in a strong position. Hopefully Lincoln have one eye on the play offs and then Hull are champions when we play them.
My thoughts about this season is we’ve been more or less a work in progress the entire time. I suppose Mr Adkins is at least moving in the direction of a settled side.
A bit of an odd question, but do you think we will stronger next season if:
- We miss out on the play offs this season by a whisker - Sneak into the play-offs but do not make the final
I don't see us as a promotion team this season, as much as I would like us to be.
Personally, I do not think it matters as most of our squad are here for the short-term, loan or out of contract. If Morgan, Vennings,AMB etc were playing week in week out I would say play offs for the big game experience but with current teams makes no difference IMO.
