The Open 2021

In order to try and take our minds off tomorrow nights game for a short while, I think we could give predictions for the greatest golf tournament in the world...The Open.
This year its being played at Royal St. Georges (a great course and really difficult if the wind is blowing!)
So who do we think will be 'Champion Golfer of 2021?'

Still a few days to go, but for me I'm backing Rahm, Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick and Thomas for starters, but will also see how this weekends Scottish Open unveils!
Thoughts or suggestions?

  • Got tickets for Friday but must admit I’ve not thought about it yet! Anyone but an American is my initial request.

Lucky you!! Im with you on anyone but an American, however Thomas is a good golfer and is my only American pick.

Points towards knowing where to miss + needing a good scrambling week. Sounds a bit like Cam Smith. Will probably put a couple of pounds on him, Leishman, Grace & Thomas.
  • I'm going Sunday, never been a Golf tournament before.

Keep an eye out Suze, also there on the Friday!

Can't look beyond Rahm at the moment, man is in serious form.
  • Got tickets for Saturday, cant wait. Really hoping Westie can win but Rahm is on fire at the moment.
  • I’m there Saturday. Apart from the fact that it’s a bastard journey from SE London I’m looking forward to it. My three new favourite golfers are Marcus Armitage, Richard Bland and Bob McIntyre so I’m hoping they make the cut so I can follow one of them.

Have booked a park and ride car ticket but looking into train options too. When I looked last year (when we first had the tickets) I booked a house in Margate. I thought I saw a train from Orpington to sandwich though which is an option. Or another station on that line?

This will be my 3rd open. Not looked at the course yet but at Muirfield and Lytham st Anne’s and my mum sat on the 14th green or another middle hole in the stand for a few hours watching loads of people come through the hole before and teeing off on the next hole as well as the one we were on. With a pair of bins. As it’s a links course you can see lots. We then chose who we wanted to follow for their last few holes. Then refreshments and then follow someone for their first few holes again and plonk down somewhere else for a few hours in the afternoon. Much prefer it in real life to tv. The greens look flat on the tv but unbelievably huge and bumpy in real life.

Yeah I live in Bromley so I can get a direct train to sandwich. It just takes forever! The blokes I’m going with have hired a minibus from sidcup but then I’ve got the hassle of getting there and they’re not getting picked up after till & 8! I don’t think I’d last till 8! I was thinking of driving to somewhere like paddock wood and getting the train from there but then I can’t have a drink. Think I’m just gonna stomach the long train journey 👍

Friday is great, watching players right on the cut mark giving it everything, good choice.

Drive to ebbsfleet for the speedy train and pick up car the next day?

Yeah fair call. I may consider that.

You do have to book a seat on the train in order to do that so prob have to decide soon!

Watching the Scottish Open at the moment and Westwood is in fine form, currently the joint leader. EDIT Now the sole leader!
For those of you going I'm envious to say the least, I've been to The Open at St George's and what a great course it is. I followed Langer when he was at his prime!
I learnt to play Links golf at the course next door 'Princes', the Open was held there back in the day and I think it was Gene Sarazan who won there.
I played there a lot in late 70's early 80's.
Hope you all have an enjoyable time there, but I hope the wind is blowing, makes it so much more difficult and a proper test of skill!
  • Got a ticket for Sunday as well as Friday now. Paid a bit OTT which I'm now regretting, if the player withdrawals are anything to go by there'll be loads of tickets available later in the week.

Very wet weather down there today but the weather for Thursday to Sunday is glorious, just needs a little more wind at the weekend.
  • The weather looks good for the 4 days - sunny spells, around 20 degrees, but gusty winds over 20mph each day.   Think that will help the links Specialists and I have a feeling DJ (who was practising down there yesterday), Spieth of the Americans.   I think the links loving Brits will do well too - got a sneaky feeling for McIntryre.... big things I expect of him this week.

I’ve  just  realised why hotels in canterbury area are so expensive this weekend. Going to a wedding inbetween canterbury and sandwich on friday and looking at hotels for the night the prices are crazy.

@supaclive McIntyre is a good shout, he plays links courses well, I've also a sneaky feeling for Westwood and Poulter.
Yet to finalise my bets but it certainly won't be Dechambeau, I hope he screws up big fashion, but we do need the wind to blow and change direction over all 4 days!

Westwood ran out of steam after two good days golfing and I think he'll make the cut and be top 20 but I am not sure he will win it.   Poulter is in fabulous form and nothing would make me happier, but I do think a younger gun with a bit of nous will win.

If the wind remains the same direction, Bryson will love that.   The course looks good, but the rough isn't waist high and he could overpower it... sadly...

I like his edge and everything but he is just a little bit OTT
  • I think lowry will put up a v good defence of his title. I think Fitzpatrick and schauffele will also show well but I would plump for JT as an outright winner
  • Shame about the rough not being a little more difficult, don't want waste high as long it's a genuine penalty.
  • I watched a "flyover" of the course put up on YouTube by Golfworld. I'm assuming its recent as it shows quite a few stands up (commentary mentioned  DJ going OOB so it cant be from the previous Open held there). Fairways & greens look in good nick but some really dodgy bunkering (especially the Himalayan on the 5th) and lots of scruffy areas between tees & fairways and greens & tees. Thought the flyover was in springtime looking at the state of some of the bunkers......hopefully just done on a bad day or they were still preparing them.

I have a friend down there today at practise and he says the rough is lush, thick and gnarly.   They've had a ton of rain down there recently so it could play tricky!

It’s been ‘improved’ by Mackenzie & Ebert, the R&A’s go-to guys. They love the waste area, blow-out look - Princes next door has loads of sandy scrapes now, the new hole at Hoylake has, Royal Porthcawl has, even Lytham’s started adding them… I guess it’s meant to appear more natural but I don’t like it, I think it’s an ugly contrast when riveted pot bunkers are nearby.

They also took out the central fairway bunkers on the 18th, presumably on R&A advice/approval. So that definitely won't be the stern test of Opens past.
  • Don't follow Golf that much but Matt Fitzpatrick seems to have a very good all round game an played well all 4 days at the Scottish Open so am going to have a small EW interest in him at 40/1

Lush ankle high is good in my book, especially with the seed heads on.
  • Weather looks good for the week with relatively light winds, so Royal St Georges may not be quite as tough as it has previously played. As for the fancied runners Schauffele is now the highest ranked player without a major following Rahm's US Open win so i will probably back him. Will also pick out a few at higher prices but not sure who yet.

Snap. I really don't know what the best tactic is in terms of spectating. Follow a group or plot up.
