Just out of interest, how many players short do people think we are of being a decent side for this division
    1) Macgillivray
    2) Matthews or Gunter
    3) NEW
    4) NEW DCM
    5) Inniss
    6) Famewo (but need another option to keep them on their toes)
    7) NEW CM
    8) NEW ACM
    9) Kirk
    10) Stockley
    11) NEW WINGER

5 starters plus two or three strong options to push them from the bench.

Clare and Dobson should be squad players along with Watson. Don’t know enough on CBT but will continue to assume a squad option.
I said EXACTLY this need for the squad a week ago. How is it WE know what is needed but the club don't?

That's the ball Morgan should be playing. Instead he too far up the pitch. Play Morgan like you would Shelvey.....further back.
As if the Wigan defence would have left enough space.

Why did we let Shinnie go, there was a player who could have been our number 10 a player with vision someone who could dictate play, someone who got forward and scored goals who could play that early ball down the side of the cbs . Instead of him we’ve got headless chickens in midfield who can run all day and night, but haven’t got a clue with the ball at their feet. Also when I said ts has got to get his wallet out and buy in pre season less bombarded with comments like , I like the way people spend other people’s money and other dickhead comments like that.
    1) for whatever reason, Adkins didn’t rate him
    2) to save on the wage bill
At the time I couldn't believe we got shot of Shinnie. If I recall most seemed to consider he was rubbish.
  • I have never experienced such utter dross. First followed Charlton back in 1966. Believe this is, league-wise, the lowest the club have ever sunk. Seems any clown or spiv is OK to run a football club nowadays. Seems any "has been" can still find a place in football management. Love the 21st century and  its values?

Wright, Curtis, Kinsey, Campbell, Went, Reeves, Gregory, Tracey, Tees, Moore, Peacock

All put in an honest stint. Perhaps not "World Class" footballers, but all "Real" footballers, playing under "Real" managers, with the club in "local" ownership. Charlton had a chance..........

Meanwhile Ethels (EFLs) love child sits smugly on top of the division, by design. Football, the beautiful game.........

Ffs, not another one who wants to go on about 1960 all the time
Can I start on the 1950s then.  Bartram, Hewie, Locke, Johnston, Ufton, Kiernan, Hurst, Firmani, Leary, Duffy (I saw him play once).  Can someone help me with an inside and outside left (Kiernan played there sometimes)
  • Complaining that players are devoid of confidence after booing them 3 games in seems rather senseless. And before anyone says anything, I was at MK.

I actually felt sorry for the players.  I sit right at the front of the covered end lower and they looked genuinely hurt by it and like lambs to the slaughter.

Thing is I don't think it's a bunch of players coasting along - in fact the opposite...they are absolutely trying their best it's just individually (for many) and collectively their best isn't good enough. Players like Stockley who don't stop putting their body on the line at both ends of the pitch must wonder what they're doing and what they have signed up for.

They don't strike me as a bunch of hard nut ...let's show these wanker fans and up our game but rather they will go further into their shells and lack confidence which will be a recipe for disaster.

Can't believe how early in a season a fanbase has turned on its players but it is symptomatic of the frustration and disbelief of the bullshit hype that was stirred up and a new dawn that sees an owner strutting around on the pitch to his new song whilst the squad resource appears to have been entirely neglected.

No one really believed the hyperbole of premier league in 5 years but at the same time the impression was given that we would be a competitive prospect and moving forwards football wise....not a backwards step and at best a ill thought out recruitment strategy or at worst complete incompetence/ neglectful squad building.

So whilst I didn't boo and hated seeing it and the reaction in the young players' faces I can understand why it happened.

Atmosphere felt toxic at the end of the game and it will take more than a tweet from TS asking fans to get behind the team to remedy it unfortunately.

    An excellent summary of events.

Instead of walking towards the Charlton faithful
playing your electric guitar thinking you are Mark knoffler or Eric Clapton etc etc,
wake up smell the Fucking roses and invest in your team, otherwise first or second division football is all you will ever see my friend !!!!

Lee Bowyer I miss you 👌👌👌
  • Back home & read most of the posts on here. If I really wanted to say what I think my post would remember one of Viewfinders finest. However, I'll try to keep it succinct but might ramble away at times......

MOTM MacGillivray by a county mile. Kept us in it & made 3 great saves on the first half. Added to the fact they hit the bar in the first half 5 or 6 nil wouldn't have flattered them.

Only Kirk looks any good from the new players we've brought in. Dobson is not good enough if you are looking for promotion. Dobson & Watson is worse than Pratley & Watson.....and I didn't think I'd be saying that this season.

We still have no creativity in midfield. No Parker or Shelvey. No Kinsella or Stuart. No one to pick a pass. I thought it might be Morgan's time but sadly it's not. Might be out of position & better a bit further back but still a lot of running around with no end product.

Never liked 1 up front. Especially if the players around him are not picking up the loose balls or knock downs.

Been saying all summer we need a small pacey striker. Should have prioritised a 20 goal a season machine - doubly so when Aneke left. We are so poor up front its unreal. I dont care what the BBC stats say, I dont think we had a shot on target (unless is was down the JS end). In comparison theh scorelld 2, hit the bar & MacG saved at least 3 more.

The fact we still have no left back is criminal. Gunter is ok there but has no attacking threat. Has to turn back & cross with his right......which slows everything down.

No idea what the next 10 days will bring but I can bet you the 3 or 4 loans will not be good enough to get us top 6 this season. What am I saying.....we need players to get us up the table & secure first. Dont think we will go down but bottom half will be about our level.

I don't want to gloat but I've been saying all summer the transfer policy was "off" and I kept on being told to wait until Aug 31st. Hope you're all pleased with yourselves and as walking is brilliant I'm going to copy Mr Positive from now on because he must be right & I must be wrong. At least Wigan knew that getting players in before August was the better ploy.

    Finally.......

I dont think I will be going next Saturday. I'm having eye surgery on thursday and so will have to recovering at home. Shame as it's going to be a relegation scrap between 2 non scoring sides. 3 goals between us in 8 games. What fun that is going to be.

Fucking hell we haven't been that bad have we!?!?!?

I thought that today was probably the best I’ve seen us play this season (seen three of four games) but sadly that isn’t saying too much.

It is interesting to read the majority of the XI getting coated on here by one poster or another-in the main I saw players giving 100% for the team but sadly, at the moment, we just lack quality particularly in the attacking third.

In saying that, one thing that did piss me off and led to us conceding the opener was our wingers not tracking their full backs. We’re Charlton, not Barcelona, and these bods need to realise that they need to do their bit defensively and not just stand around like dickheads especially when they haven’t beat their man for most of the game nor put in a cross in anger. I know it’s his debut but if Blackett Taylor stays with his man, they don’t score. In a game that tight, the finest of margins are so important and we can’t keep doing it.

Curbs said much of this post match. It was clear from the studio vibe that it’s quality and not effort which is lacking, which in many ways is so much worse. Very big couple of weeks ahead.
  • Feel sorry for the players, who are being let down as much as the fans. What we don’t know is what Roddy, Gallen and Adkins are saying to Sandgaard. If they are not telling him the squad is seriously inadequate then the fault is with them. If they are and he is not listening it’s with him. Maybe it’s a bit of both.
No disrespect, and I know TS is a little wet around the ears but I reckon my old Nan could tell the squad is inadequate

They give their all for the shirt, and I won’t deny them that. We have all seen enough chancers in the past nicking a wage wearing red but most of these fellas are just not good enough but that fault lies with the senior management who thought otherwise.
I think many of them would actually be good enough as part of a squad with another solid four or five players in the mix as well. The problem we have is that is our first XI and they are miles off.

What was really telling today about our prospects in the short term is that, despite me saying that it was the best we’ve played, Wigan, who haven’t been great this season and weren’t that hot today, still defended better, had a much better shape and looked far more dangerous going forward than us.
  • Maybe now we all know Lyle Taylor is a very average Championship player, and Notts Forest as crap etc........can we get get him back on loan 😂😂😂

TS was meant to be our saviour.

After all the crap with Roland, we said we have our club back.

New owner, experienced manager, a structure, a plan and all that.

The missing piece is we have no TEAM.

Its 50% weaker than last year and 200% worse than the year before.

    Albie a No. 10??? - do me a favour
    Gunter at LB??
    Watson anywhere near the team???

One dimensional pattern with all the pressure on Stockley.

The club has accepted this position and some fans may even accept.

I will always be a supporter, but I will not go to any games again until I can see some proper investment in a TEAM.

Kirk must be thinking "what the F**K have I done"?

Roland pissed us all off, but this is no better. Sorry to be so blunt, but I saw this coming weeks ago.

You weren't the only one I can assure you but I'll bet there will still be people arguing that the transfer window is still open & we'll soon have a squad challenging for promotion. To those I'll say take your head out of your arse.

  • Normally I go to a game and if we lose and play poorly I can go back to Thailand and think I won't have to watch that again for another year or so; at least that was the case until Valley Pass came along; I watched most games last season. Were there any performances as disappointing as that? Yes, including the Crewe and Accrington games at the end of the season along with most home games early in 2021.
But I can't think the same way any more. I'm in England for two years and although I haven't bought a season ticket I'll be getting along when I can.
I hope I see something better next time.

Unfortunately “positivity” is often synonymous with “wishful thinking”. I honestly think if there was a realistic shared view on the situation we wouldn’t be here.
  • @golfaddick Good luck with your operation. If all goes well pop down to The Valley and see if you can get a game. Even with an eye patch, you'll be better than half the first team.

My pre-season optimism for us to be in the mix for automatic promotion has been replaced by deflating realism that we simply don't look anywhere even remotely near that. I wasn't expecting anything but a scrappy, tight game today, but it's a real kick in the nuts to capitulate in such a way to lose 0-2. Wigan created more chances and looked better in the first half, and honestly, on balance, they'd be disappointed to only come away with a point. We should have been able to hold on to the point, but I think be barely deserved it and didn't look even close to nicking it.

We're playing some really dire football right now and, quite rightly, a lot of the ire is directed at the midfield. Apart from a small number of games, Watson does look like he's stealing a living - he's slow, passive and ineffective. He doesn't care at all imho, and shouldn't be anywhere near the squad outside of an emergency. JJ would do a better job. Dobson does get stuck in to try and break down play, but in possession of the ball, he's pretty limited. Clare has looked inconsistent and lacking the quality distributing the ball as well. I've had a lot of patience with Morgan in the past, but the start of this season was his chance to show his quality and being the player we want him to be - he simply hasn't shown that quality and looks out of his depth in the middle of the park. All 4 of them have regularly looked guilty of not being available for passes from our CBs and not driving the play forward. Our natural wingers are starved of the ball because there isn't the desire nor composure from any of these players to take control of the games.

Gilbey is being somewhat touted as a player to solve this issue, but I'm not sure he's going to being to make the impact we want. If we are missing anyone, it's JFC. He's the closest to quality we have on the books, but it's going to be a long time before he is back. The best choice for now is probably Dobson plus A.N.Other to come in on loan or, preferrably, on a permanent that is box-to-box, can carry the ball and draw players in to make space for Kirk/DJ (who both offer our best threat going forward). Clare and Morgan should be squad players, whilst Watson can disappear as far as I am concerned.

Ultimately, our forward threats are all nullified by the lack of a midfield to link play - we'd look weak right now even if we had the forward line of PSG, because they simply don't get the ball. We're very predictable to play against due to a complete lack of dynamism in midfield. We create nothing because of them. I think more offensive full backs would help, but the lack of a Cullen/Bielik/Gallagher/<insert midfielder of even moderate quality> is killing us. If we don't bring one in, a top half finish looks like a pipe dream.

I've not seen a Charlton midfield look so toothless for a long time. It's putting more pressure on our defence and starving our forward players. I don't expect us our fortunes to change any time soon without some quality added in the middle of the park.
This sums it up. Great post.

Missed the first 10 mins, but for much of the game I thought we did well, but it was always the final pass that was lacking.
I don’t like criticising individual players, especially when they give 100%, but Morgan seems to have the ball more than any other player, and because he doesn’t use it very well our half decent build up play comes to nothing. An upgrade could make a massive difference.
The other thing is that our wingers both had decent games, but because we don’t get enough players in the box their crosses come to nothing. You won’t find Watson or Dobson in the box. Nor Morgan very often. DJ arrives too late, if at all. Kirk, who’s a league above, gets in the box quite well, and you can see him getting on the scoresheet.
So two better midfielders, one being a playmaker, are what we need, plus a back up CB. A left back too, ideally.
  • Dare I say it but the reason we have lost today is more because Albi  is not there yet more than any other single reason.

He tries hard but he lacks confidence at creative midfield play and should have been substituted much earlier on. It’s more a case of keeping him on to give him confidence than anything else and that’s never a good move. Not a great lover of bowyer but he would’ve pulled him off at half-time. The trouble is who do you put on instead of him? We have no Josh Cullen or Jake Forster-Caskey right now.
We had zero midfielders on the bench, so Bowyer would have looked a bit dumb if he’d hooked him at half time.
