    Gallen had his 1 to 5 list and Lavelle was next to go if Jason Kerr the CB of St Johnstone went to Wigan, who along with Ipswich were splashing the cash in that window in League 1.

    I know of 2 lads that got trials a couple of seasons ago with a League 2 club just so they wouldn't be short in the FA youth Cup.
    One 16 year old impressed and was told it was 90% he would get a scholarship but it never came about. Apparently this club were full of promises but just used the conveyor belt of young keen footballers to fill their sides for youth matches. A Trialists were running amok. 
    The lad in question ended up at Brentford mainly because they decided to not only  have a B team but to have some academy age 16 to 18 year olds again. They took 3 lads from one South London academy.

    It is brutal and so difficult to get contracts.
    The record amount of trials that I know of is a player who was at Fulham from 6 to 14 and then during his teenage years went for trials up and down the country. I was at a FA cup qualifying match and he was subbed at HT for Glebe (Chislehurst)as he had to get to Barnsley for a week's trial ! His Agent must've got him about 15 trials over a number of years which all ended up with a No. Last I heard he was playing part time in the Athenian Premier and at 22 has maybe? realized that his dream won't come to fruition.

    Great life for the few but a hard slog for the majority.

    I don't think Lavelle had any problems settling, he was simply not good enough.

    The moment Freddie turned Lavelle for Ipswich 3rd goal at The Valley will never be forgotten. It was at that point I thought, Congratulations Sir, you are now officially the slowest defender I have ever seen (  despite some good competition  ).

    I don't think Lavelle had any problems settling, he was simply not good enough. 
    Always seemed like he was putting quite a lot of effort into trying to help Kirk settle as well. It really is a shame he wasn't better at football

    Surprised he has got a L2 deal really. Could never fault his effort but I thought he would have had to drop into the NL.

    Wonder how many of our recent failures would have worked so much better under Nathan Jones - Part of our issues of late weren't necessarily down to the players themselves, but rather the structure as a whole.

    I think Kirk is one of the few who Jones wouldn't have got a tune out of.

    Lavelle seemed a massive confidence issue with him.

    No pace and not good in the air.  I agree broadly with your point though - Lloyd Jones didn’t look special under previous managers

    He's fine in L2, a typical lower league northern defender. 

    What he wasn't, was a L1 promotion side defender. He'll always have the Brighton penalty though

    So true ..shows what appointing a good manager can do ..I think Jones would have seen through Kirk after a day

He wasn’t the worst player to ever play for us and he was always committed and gave his all. He’s good enough to play league football no doubt and I’m pleased he’s fixed up in League Two. Hope he can get his mojo back and be a success there.
    Great post and I totally agree. He always gave his all, just wasn't good enough for the level. I met him and he was a nice guy very chatty and interested in what I did for work, chatted about living in London and plenty of other stuff.

    Prefer players like this that although limited are decent people, much different to the likes of Kirk.

    Never really though t about it at the time but he probably was hard done by not playing against Man U. Fair play to him, he wasn’t annoyed at Ness and said he did well.

    Their lack of pace and mobility was pretty shocking. Llera could launch the ball though.

    Maybe, but Lavelle's memory is a bit selective.  Ness played, and played well, in the win against Brighton. He kept his place thereafter.  Lavelle had a poor 1st half (IIRC) against Oxford and was subbed for Inniss.  So arguably it was really Inniss who edged Lavelle out for the Man U game- but partly because of the Oxford shocker.

    Seems a decent guy but a perfect example of the lower-league mediocrity peppered throughout our squad from 2020-24

    Good ol Lavelle, sticking away that winning pen in the Brighton shoot out will be my lasting memory of him.

    Good call. A lot to be said about selective memory. My lasting memory of Ahadme will always be his turn on a sixpence at Roots Hall. Everything else is a blur.
