Another shout here for uncle beef. The proprietors really know their shit and as has already been mentioned a genuine cafc legend could well be chopping up and serving you the gorgeous yellow fat biltong, a couple of rib-eyes or some of the other south African delicacies they serve up.
Finding a good steak in the UK isn’t easy I find. But when you do it’s usually outstanding.
My experience tells me that it’s so much easier to find good quality cuts of meat in the US. You go to a chain restaurant in the UK and 9 times out of 10 the steak is shit. Do the equivalent in the US and the steak is another level.
Best steak I ever had in my life was in the restaurant of the most bizarre hotel I have ever stayed in before. Place called the Madonna Inn in San Luis Opisbo California.
Steak was utterly outstanding and have never had anything come close since over here.
I’ll never forget going to a swanky steak restaurant in Hampshire about 15 years ago with my wife and a couple of friends. Sarah and Malcolm. malcolm had been raised on a farm in New Zealand and wasn’t the brightest button. Harmless enough but never goi g to make a brain surgeon. we ordered some very decent steaks and when they turned up they were glorious but Malcolm was adamant something was missing. “This needs a bit of something ” he told the waiter who went through the list of options. “No, nothing like that. I want some brown sauce”
I nearly slapped him with his steak. He’d ordered a steak “so rare a good vet could bring it back” and then smothered it in HP sauce. fucking heathen

You are so right, those 2 paragraphs sum it up. I'd never eat a steak in a chain place apart from Miller & Carter, they know what they are doing and never had a bad one there
When I hear people ordering steak in harvester or brewers fayre places it makes me wonder what they are expecting from a steak and are probably confused why some people rave about good steak. All about the quality if the meat and why I get so worked up about how people accept processed, intensively farmed poor quality meat that has been packed with antibiotics and then pumped full of saline. Not fair on animals, the populations health, or the environment
Best steak I've ever eaten bar none was in a tiny little Argentinian restaurant in fuerteventura that sadly no longer exists so its only those who discovered this very well hidden gem who can appreciate how good their Argentinian special was. Mind blowing and cost about 12 euros
Always found American steaks great on size (if not too big) and the restaurant experience but I’ve never been that fussed on the taste. Give me grass fed every time.
I was told ribeye should be medium rare, will try medium next time based on this.
@holyjo I hope you enjoyed it, whatever you went for.

One trick that improves shop bought steak is leaving it uncovered in the fridge for a couple of days before cooking. The crust is miles better that way and the meat underneath much more tender.
Almost always Ribeye for me and medium rare. Have had rare a few times and a bit too chewy for me. The flavour in a ribeye is unrivalled.
Gaucho is great, been to the one in the o2 a few times and they do a decent brunch deal if you can get a crowd together, went before the Ukraine game this summer, was about 12 of us, unlimited steak and booze for 2 hours, came to about 60 a head.
Best steak i have had in London was at STK last summer. Went with work but prices were steep.
Actually had a ribeye last night at Buenos Aires Cafe in Greenwich was quite nice although the mrs got a sirloin that was pretty crap, can get lovely sirloin of course just find BA a bit hit and miss with their meats, especially post lockdown, been a few times and been a bit disappointed.
Has anyone been to le relais de venise l'Entrecote? Theres a few around the city, just continuously bring you steak until you say stop, either medium or rare no inbetween.

Mental place. The pink leather, the urinal and the rooms...
This thread reminds me of a true story, that always makes me smile, when I think about it. Once , at a family dinner out, with my wife's parents and her brother and sister, with their partners. The waiter comes over to take the order and eventually gets to my sister in law and he asks her what she would like. She replies " I'd like the steak please " , lovely replies the waiter and asks " and how do you like your steak?" Then she says " I like it a lot " , quite genuinely. Followed by much laughter around the table and a dumb struck waiter.
Watched the John Torode’s Argentina program, all about 🥩 a real eye opener.😋
I was in Argentina last year, had some outrageous steak one place I went (Don Julio) was the best I've ever eaten. Their style is very different from our cooking methods, usually long and slow (bit similar to those in the southern US), I think the Argentinian beef is quite lean so it lends itself better to a longer cooking. I recommend going to anyone but if you are a meat eater you are in heaven, not just the steak but choripan on every street corner, morcilla (blood sausage) and traditional sausages were also great.
In Amsterdam a few years ago and there seemed to be dozens of Argentinian Restaurants. Has that always been the case in Amsterdam or is it a new thing (do the Dutch have "Argentinians" like we have "Indians")??

There is small Argentinian restaurant I have visited in Amsterdam a couple of times (and I can’t remember the name - probably all the weed I smoked out there) and the steak is excellent.
Another top notch one was in Valencia - you pick your cut and then cook it yourself on a hot plate at your table.
I’m terms of having one in England - Goodman’s is my favourite- never had a bad one in there.

salad followed by steak with french fries and their famous sauce, nothing else on the menu.

Fillet - rare if you’re having a good drink after

I’m obviously going for the Rib Eye Medium.
