  • That's bizarre. The policewoman's acting like she's a holiday rep working at a resort.

    Just just seen your link.
Thank you for that. It looks quite civilised.
Very civilised, I'm wondering if they brought them sandwiches and tea, followed by a piece of cake.

The the word is people could massively help the environment if they stopped eating animals and fish.

You're actually probably more right than you know... If you do know then you're a genocidal maniac.

If everyone on the planet stopped eating meat and fish the farmland made available wouldn't be big enough to feed the population.

In short you'd have to either cultivate more land for farming and thus destroy more green spaces or watch the population shrink as a result of starvation because current farmland cannot provide for those that mixed varied diet farming can.

Realistically you want more vegans and vegetarians for animal welfare purposes so you're dressing it up as for the environment.
I read somewhere once that it takes a thirt of an acre to feed a vegetarian for a year, but an acre and a half to feed a meat eater.
I wish I had verified statistics for that.
Do you have any scientific information with regard to more land being needed for crop growing than for meat production?

Is there a video of the tea and sandwiches event?

  • Any coppers on here able to explain this tactic?

    I'm lost for words.
    Operation scaredshitless?
  • Far from it, it’s very believable, par for the course in UK now.

Whilst other countries would have hosed the fuckers off the road and got the traffic moving we hold their hands.

Why do you think thousands are crossing the channel in rubber boats, we welcome them with open arms and a nice warm cuppa.
Lemme get this straight, you’re upset that our old bill don’t have a license to smash heads in when they fancy it?  That’s a bad thing now 🤔
  • I've read too many instances of people missing cancer treatment etc to have any sort of sympathy for these tree hugging arseholes and their cause. Cannot believe that the police dont just drag them off the road and nick them immediately.
    Where?

On the actual insulation topic specifically for Landlords.

Landlords are soon going to have to upgrade their properties to EPC level C or above (2025 for new tenancies, 2028 for existing) assuming it passes through parliament etc. For your average 1920/30's property etc that will mean in most instances internal insulation to walls as well as under floor and potential triple glazing and in some instances new boilers etc.

Going to be very interesting how this is dealt with. I'm a trustee of a local branch of a friendly society. We have 53 properties that currently aren't C or above.

We have the capital to do the work if we wish, however it's probably unlikely we will as it simply won't be cost effective/return on capital to do so and part of the rules is obtaining the best possible return for the society's members. So we are talking next week around selling the properties starting probably early next year, so sadly we'll be ending tenancies over the next 6 years and at least 53 families will have to find a new place to live.

PS, to make it even more topical all the properties are in Dartford!

Yes. But the very difficult target of 2025 is impractical.

And again, you're not thinking about the 100 of thousands of shared ownership properties or those built recently but before the current Building Regulations Approved Document L1b which improved the U value requirements 10 years ago.

Current regs are being reviewed, so who knows what the new requirements may be.
I heard an expert on the radio say that the demands were realistic. Not sure he said necessarily in the time frame, but he definitely said they were realistic.

    https://news.sky.com/story/fossil-fuel-companies-are-suing-governments-across-the-world-for-more-than-18bn-12409573

Fossil fuel companies are suing governments across the world for more than $18bn (£13bn) after action against climate change has threatened their profits, according to research conducted by campaign group Global Justice Now and provided exclusively to Sky News.

Five energy companies, including British companies Rockhopper and Ascent, are using a legal process that allows commercial entities to sue governments under international laws governing trade agreements and treaties.

These corporate arbitration courts operate outside of a country's domestic legal system.

According to Global Justice Now, which has collated publicly available information, five of the largest lawsuits under way are being brought by TC Energy, RWE, Uniper, Rockhopper and Ascent Resources.

Maybe turn the hate towards the real enemies.

Yes, the governments that signed so much power over to the corporations by signing up to the trade agreements on such terms in the first place. We were warned about this.

In terms of this protest though, the objectives of the protest aren’t really anything to do with fossil fuel companies. It’s about trying to influence government policy.

That’s the thing though. Some people would be quite happy for the Old Bill to smash in the heads of those that they deem worthy of such treatment but would cry like little bitches if the same treatment was meted out to those they empathise/side with. The term ‘double standards’ was made for such folk.
    A couple of points

    - I don't expect the police to smash anyone's heads in. Just to clear the highway in a timely manner (this may have happened, I don't know) and not kiss up to people who are flagrantly breaking the law in front of em (as per the video shows)

    - Why do you think I'd cry like a bitch if I was dealt with like that? I ain't cried since I was about 14 years old.

Well my 35 years working in repair, maintenance and improvement of social housing properties at various levels up to Director of Property and Estates and with multiple construction and management qualifications, including three years specialising in energy saving policies and improving U values across a massive variety of housing stock, both in new build and specifically retro fitting to 'difficult' properties as well as dealing with real social issues relating to them like the massive rise in fuel poverty as well as published papers involved in our managed experiences in the European wide experiences as well as heavily involved as a specialist in fire safety working with the Government on the Post Grenfell issues would suggest your radio expert is talking complete and absolute bollocks.

Be nice to know exactly what the new Building Regulations regarding compliance across the whole review, testing regimes and completely rewritten Approved Documents are going to be and how they tie up with the revised British Standards.

Thank you, I was just about to post something similar. I was not suggesting heads get smashed in, just move them off the highway as quickly as possible.

That video is shocking, they were breaking the law.

Impressive CV. However, these guys also say it's a good idea, albeit ambitious.

As @Gribbo has pointed out, they're already doing it in France.

Those demands - especially 2) are not only impractical but impossible to enforce.

My house - feck off with your insulation products
I'm allergic to any fibrous material and/or current insulation materials
I live in a Grade 1,2*,2,3 listed building
How do you insulate 13.5" solid brickwork without significantly decreasing the size of my property internally/ ruining it's appearance externally?
What additional ventilation do you provide to prevent interstitial condensation?
Who's going to extent/alter/adapt by internal services so they still operate and are serviceable?
Who is going to adapt my internal and external disabled adaptation so I can still enter, exit and get around my property?
I'm only the Leaseholder, you'll need to get serve notice on the freeholder. They live somewhere in Scotland, Nigeria,  Brazil. Malaysia. Latvia, Pakistan, but I haven't a clue where.
My roof has been leased to my Solar Panel/PV energy supplier. You'll need to serve notice on them, but they went bust a couple of years ago and I've no idea who has the contract now.
Who is going to pay for 500k plus party wall agreements that may be required - and more importantly who's going to enforce them?

If any one of those protesters have considered all those issues - and without others that I can't roll of the top of my head - in their DEMANDS, then I'll wear one of @Henry Irving's cardigans for a month.

Who and what gives them the right to demand something? I demand their punishment is to dip their head in a bucket of pig shit for 30 seconds.
Maybe fitting an XXXXXXXXXXXXXL Henry's cardigan round you house would solve?
A hoodie would sort the roof.

Serious amount of what aboutery on here. No change ever happens without disruption. Disruption causes inconvenience. Think of all those poor shop owners whose windows got smashed by the Suffragettes.
There is a separate debate to be had about the class privilege of these protestors - if this disruption was being done by a more working class group I can guarantee that the batons would be out and the police would not be holding back. That said,  when the petrol tankers had rolling blockades against Blair, the cops were pretty hands off then too.
And anyone who thinks the govt are doing anywhere near enough about climate change has not been paying attention. Yeah, I know China and other places need to do more, but we can only do things where we have some influence. And the only government we can currently influence is the British.
The suffragettes did a lot worse than just smashing windows!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffragette_bombing_and_arson_campaign
Suffragettes took action against the refusal of government to change discriminatory laws directly affecting the lives of millions of women.

Contrast with a specious cause with little support and no logical basis to justify it. Instead objective is to get attention for an entirely different problem not directly within the government’s gift to resolve.

if argument was for government to spend £x instead of £y on carbon reduction it would at least have a crumb of logic.

    No comparison I’m afraid.
