I thought Marcus and Ronan first half were excellent, really good. I thought the system suited them. I thought they got between Charlton, I thought they occupied really good space.
I thought it was really hard for Charlton’s six, Ben Watson, to deal with both of them, it was too far for their full-backs and centre halves to judge, so we just got them in a really lovely space and we were able to just keep playing through to them.
We forced Charlton into a formation change maybe in the 35th minute from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and they matched us up in the middle. We were getting lots of overloads and playing through them, I thought it was a good decision for Nigel [Adkins] to do that.
A manager who regardless if you think is good or not, has something positive to say about Adkins.
I think I’ll go with his opinion over the armchair managers we have

Didn’t NA say he changed formation after 15 mins ?

He gets to see us for 90 mins. The "armchair" managers pay good money to see us every week. Also he is not likely to diss a fellow manager. I know who I prefer to trust with their judgement.

It will make him feel better about not beating us if he gives NA credit rather than slating his forwards for them not beating the worst Charlton side in history .
maybe if we hadn’t started 4231, we might not have been a goal down? Just a thought
23 different starters in the League this season. 18 changes to the starting eleven in the last 3 games and probably another 4/5 this Tuesday night.
Bar the keeper no one has been an ever present in the League this season.
The window has closed and he still does not know his best eleven or formation. The first half summed it up and most of them appear not to have a clue where they were playing. I’m no fan of Watson but the fella was totally exposed on his own in front of the back 4 in that 45 minutes till half time.
And that was against an out of form Portsmouth side.
Needs 4 points from the next 2 before the international break (Rotherham looking very likely to be binned) or then it’s time to make a decision.
Lots been said already, but enjoyed this game. Draw felt fair. Pearce worries me in possession and I'm sick of us passing back all the time. Free kick in the attacking half and its back to the goalie within 3 passes. Thought Lee, Clare, CBT, Davison all had good games. Watson improved after he was paired with someone who could run. Lavelle looks calm and collected and Matthews was good today as well defensively. Stockley needs to be dropped. Not working in this formation for him and his body language is all wrong. Team do not look united.
Why wasn’t Adkins shape and set up correct from the start. He spent last Saturday telling us how he changed his shape to combat Wycombe’s threat and gone with 3-4-3 or whatever it was. Pompey look like they could’ve run riot in the first 20 mins, so it obvious he’d got his set up wrong.
We seem to be going round in circles and getting sound bites from Adkins about formations, set ups and ways of play in each post most interview. Yesterday Pompey were too ‘expansive’. I’m of course an armchair pundit, but constant line up changes and explanations of tactics all seem to imply he doesn’t know what he’s doing, and neither do we. Most winning post match interviews rarely mention tactics and formations to the best of memory.
Last season’s topic of agitation for me from Charlton TV was the constant ‘can we make the playoffs?’ As we’d all dissect the league table, the fixtures and Adkins would come on and give us his thoughts. This season’s topic of agitation is squarely becoming the ramblings about our formation and line ups.

Except a lot of us have been saying that we should be playing 442 for a month at least, to avoid Stockley being isolated. Good to get Cowley's endorsement tho. I hope Adkins is listening as well.
we witnessed our earliest leaver yesterday. As pompey celebrated their first goal the bloke next to us grabbed his belongings and left. Never to be seen again.
He heard that the European fightback was underway at Whistling Straits.

Slightly OTT mate, appreciate they were important to your good lady....but hey..perspective maybe
Game we should of won. Portsmouth are turd and we let them into the game.
What I take away from it...Stockley can't play without a partner and CBT needs to start when fit along with Davison.
If its getting there then it's taking too long
Really? Pompey should have scored at least 6. No way did we justify a point. Why Adkins benched Blackett-Taylor after terrorising Gillingham is beyond me. Gilbey playing on the wing with B-T and Kirk on the bench? They must look rubbish in training. Watson’s every contribution was a disaster one way or another.
If Adkins can’t select a sensible, settled formation, he simply has to go.

Those slagging Watson off need a reality check. There are things he can do better but overall he played well yesterday.
He needs someone who is box to box playing with him though but he is calm on the ball.
Harry Arter however....
He's had two very good games but some on here simply don't understand what his job is on the pitch. Those same people have also fail to acknowledge that he has played two games of ninety minutes plus, while others in the squad can't manage two games a week.
Although it’s arguable that a draw was a fair result, given Charlton’s spirited second half performance, I thought that Pompey were the better and more cohesive side overall and moved the ball well throughout (not least the goalie, who I'm told has their best passing stats for the season thus far). We were all over the shop in the first half, unable to cope with their press and allowing them time and space to play through us at will. The pivotal moment was probably when Marquis somehow squirted the ball wide from 3 yards towards the end of the first half - had that gone in, I think they’d have been home and hosed.
Charlton were better in the second half - it would have been hard not to have been after a lamentable first 45 minutes - but Pompey still looked dangerous on the counter and it was certainly a point gained for Charlton.
In terms of the defence, Lavelle looks a sound player, although Pearce struggled at time, particularly when in possession and he and Souare contrived to give the ball away in dangerous areas on more than one occasion and were very fortunate that it didn't cost us. I can see Famewo and Purrington coming into the side on Tuesday.
In midfield, Arter was totally anonymous and we have to hope that being away from first team football for several months hasn’t permanently dulled his edge. Clare’s energy and ball carrying ability were a significant upgrade, not to mention his timely strike just after half time. Watson was better in the second half (a nice pass leading up to the late equaliser) and it was good to get 90 minutes into Gilbey. It is, however, abundantly clear that Nigel Adkins still has no idea as to what his best combination in midfield is. Until we get that key area sorted out, the team will continue to struggle and turn in uneven and poor performances.
Offensively, Lee is a clever and inventive player and Leko’s pace will trouble teams at this level. Blackett-Taylor was again impressive and got his second assist of the week.
The season is slipping away fast and three points are a must on Tuesday before we face a gritty away fixture at Fleetwood. If we fail to beat Bolton, I can see us going into the international break firmly rooted in the relegation zone with one win in the first 11 games. With around a quarter of the season gone, that is a pretty dismal level of performance for a club with our budget and promotion aspirations.

It's been said about seven times now, but CBT was red flagged by the physios and wasn't even supposed to be on the bench. He looks like he could be a massive player for us this season, no point in getting him injured.
Chance wise I think it was more or less equal to be honest.
What I don’t understand is why don’t we high press teams from minute one? We only seem to press in the second half after he’s reminded them at half time.

Players aren’t fit enough. Tried that with Bowyer and too many got injured. Heard an interesting belief that Adkins is slightly old school and believe the press should come from from deeper in the defensive third and not the opposition third (opposite to Leeds and City)

They did not have any sentimental value, just a decent pair of glasses that were quite expensive,it is more the principal that a,presume, fellow lady charlton Fan would just put them in their pocket, maybe ott, buts that how I feel about these sort of people.

People are undermarking Lee in Player Marks so far imo. Without him we'd have been completely sunk. He basically dragged us from total abjection to near-dominance, almost on his own
Was it him who pinged the ball to CBT to assist Davison's equaliser? I'll give it to you he did pass to Clare for the first equaliser and pressured the defence when they were in possession a bit as well as run at them with the ball.
I thought it was Watson, pretty sure Lee had been subbed by then.
That was my point though I should have been clearer.
Lee hardly dragged us from "total abjection to near dominance" you have to hand that to Adkins - all three subs made a positive impacful difference. His formation changes helped too.
I think some people are wrapped up in EL because of who his father is.
Adkins is on borrowed time, but deserves credit when it's due.
We drew 1-1. We sit 22nd in.the table. Getting a draw for us because the team HE chose himself was shit, shouldn't get him.credit.
You ok with us getting relegated, so long as we regularly get a draw, at home, from a losing position?!
We are the lowest and worst we've ever been in our history.
We drew 2-2.
If I was okay with being relegated would I state Adkins is on borrowed time?

Yeah me too. The professionals that are in the industry, paid to do the jobs.
I'll hear other opinions, but those of professionals carry more weight.
Either way, we are not in a good spot and after the next game we'll have played 10 and gained a maximum of 9 points. Having failed to gain points in at least half of our games.
The straw that breaks the camel's back cannot be far away if things don't change.
I wouldn't want any fans managing us, it would be a disaster. But sometimes fans do identify issues the professionals aren't addressing or would rather were not pointed out for other reasons.
I believe it's telling that Adkins told us that he changed the formation after 20 minutes.
Oh well, at least Adkins has a plan B.
Makes me wonder why we didn't start the match with that changed formation? We gradually looked much better for it.
I dont think a box in midfield is a long term prospect. We looked a lot more dangerous when we had a bit of width . I don’t advocate two out and out wide players, per se, but having none is madness
Maybe not. It wasn't quite what I was suggesting though.
We've started the season typically getting over-run in midfield for large swathes of games. That needed addressing.
The midfield box playing narrow, at least leaves the outside channels free for overlapping fullbacks and one player like Lee, Leko and Gilbey to move wide when building attacks, overloading or taking defenders out of position.
Of course, one these same players need to offer cover to their own defending fullback when needed.
I'm not suggesting it's the way forward but it was a Plan B ...... and it did the job when needed yesterday.
