That might have been the most complete performance I can recall from a Charlton Athletic side of the last 20 years. Plymouth are a good, good side and Ryan Lowe was my choice after Bow left, we haven't just totally dominated, out fought, out worked and out played a mickey mouse team.
Ben Purrington is in the form of his life, Elliot Lee is a true legend in the making, truly he is playing below himself but he is such a good example with his work rate. Akin Famewo was a tower at the back and dominated a very decent number 9. DJ completely roasted their left side and ran himself into the ground. Connor Washington remained a threat throughout and whilst George Dobson/the white Kante has set his bar really high and had another inspirational game today. And Alex Gilbey has also made himself undroppable, truly sets the standard for lung busting runs.
I'm so so happy with the turnaround and more than anything the absolute effort and desire being displayed, thats all I ever want from a Charlton team and to see some of the genuinely decent footballers we have leaving it all put there every game makes us a horrible prospect for anyone in the league
Agreed, i thought it was brilliant near the end they played a short corner and three of our boys absolutely sprinted towards them to stop it.
Adkins midfield was always being out numbered, Jacko has corrected that by playing three at the back with wing backs who have defensive nous covering. Adkins downfall was he either didn't want to change his system or he didnt know how to.
Not only that, Jacko has picked the three players who bring a balance of technique and ground covering energy.
That may be down to more time on the training ground getting those players to understand and believe in the system.
Incredible turn around of form and atmosphere. All happening without the services of Innis, Lavelle, Matthews, Leko, Stockley and JFC to name but a few - huge pride and thanks for all the boys, JJ & JE 💙
Absolutely incredible how Dobson couldn’t get into the match day squad under Adkins. Total misjudgment on his part and shows that Gallen once again has an eye for a player.
There’s definitely connection to the players now that there wasn’t before, you couldn’t pick out a bad player today, Alex Gilbey is a real unsung hero amongst many unsung heroes over Johnnie’s first few games, he does not stop running in that midfield.
Missed today as I am out in Fuerteventura, but sat in our local here and used their WiFi to watch the game on Charlton TV with my dad. The rest of the outside terrace were watching the rugby and intrigued to know what we were watching and screaming for on the iPad. The landlord has promised to try and get the next couple of games on at least one of their screens for us.
That really was a superb performance. I have no idea where those possession stats come from - can’t be true surely - but I thought we were excellent. Plymouth really were 2nd best, although I did worry when they attacked in the first half.
Can’t fault any single player in that performance. Said it on another thread that it was right that Thomas speak to other potential managers but, every time the team put in a performance like that for Johnnie, they are making any conversation with an outsider ever more difficult.
So tell me Harris (or whoever), what exactly do you think you can add to what JJ & JE are doing now?? Thanks for popping in, don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out!!
We were very good today, apart from a couple of moments in the first half I thought we dealt with Plymouth attack very well. Famewo the standout for me.
One good thing, good job there is no VAR in this league otherwise DJ would have conceded a handball penalty in the first half. Lucky it was at our end not theirs
Loving the sour grapes on the Plymouth forum claiming it was our cup final. Brilliant performance, made a team playing very well look average at best. So many players performing at levels you wouldn't think possible after seeing them under Adkins.
Hope the Plymouth lads aren't too disappointed at missing out on the open-top bus parade they had arranged in expectance of their win.
Cup final? I thought plymouth was a made up place by the Ginsters marketing team until I heard Josh Widdicome mention it on a podcast.
Ha ha ...... I know what you mean. Plymouth is a tiny little hamlet of 250,000 people and a catchment area of a further 1 million.
Ginsters might sponsor Argyle, but their pasties are made in Cornwall. Nobody in Cornwall will eat a Ginsters pasty.
Today, I finally realised the veracity of that old adage, often used in a sporting context :
"There's no "I" in "TEAM".
And, in addition, another comes to mind....
" All for one and one for All ".
Both phrases epitomise the work ethic that one very special man has instilled in his players - something which had seemingly gone AWOL under the previous incumbent.
Together with self belief & confidence in each one's ability, he and his trusty assistant, have transformed a group of honest, but confused individuals into the team we all hoped we'd see this season.
This afternoon, we were privileged to witness this incredible turn around in all its pomp. And what a glorious spectacle it was !
As a wise pundit on Quest stated tonight " The Johnnie Jackson Revolution".
So, as we bask in the warmth of a fantastic performance & count the number of sleeps until we go again, there is surely only one question that our owner needs to answer.
One really great thing from today was the potential it could have to help build our support. A few times when we were winning in the second half and the place was rocking my attention was drawn to the lower part of the the north end of the East Stand and the rows upon rows of young kids that were having the time of their lives. If even but a few of those youngsters find their way back to the Valley on a regular basis it will be a brilliant outcome.
When you arrange these sorts of games with some incentive to bolster the attendance success will in a large part come down to the uncertainty of the on the field performance on the day regardless of how good the planning and execution are. Pleased for all those who grafted to make todays initiative possible that their efforts were rewarded with interest.
Had to smile after the game as a gang of 7 year old ultras were giving it the big Red Army - Red Army along Charlton Road
The only slight concern I can see is, how do the players keep that level of intensity up, and over two thirds of a season where they’re playing catch up? The lads put such a shift in against Rotherham and Plymouth that by 70mins many of them were cooked. I hope they can do it.
Really great valley day today, up there with some of my favourites, despite the queues to get in and missing the first ten minutes. Pretty obviously not opening all the west upper turnstiles for a sold out game was going to result in that. Plus the electronic scanning thing is rubbish. At one point they opened the exit gates and people surged in.
Hopefully there’s some sort of review.
Anyway, was able to quickly forget all of that, and hopefully the first timers did too. This team puts in a shift like few others I’ve seen. Every one of them.
Special mentions for Dobson (lad can switch on the afterburners when he chooses) and Famewo, closely followed by Gilbey and DJ.
But for me Elliot Lee the standout. For a flair player, his work off the ball is exceptional.
I don’t know why it is, but over the last 30 years or so the successful DNA of this club is modest players working their nuts off for a manager who’s an ex player. Would be incredibly brave stupid of TS to go against that now, as much as we surely need to find another formula at some point!
Wish they didn't blare that song out after a win like that. Was so loud and drowned out/ diluted the authentic atmosphere and crowd noise. Not necessary.
Don’t need that bloody song and don’t need the Red red robin after the game either. I want to hear the fans singing not some shit heavy metal.
An outstanding all-round team performance and an atmosphere that everyone there will remember for a long time. It must have been everything that Thomas was hoping for and it was tremendous to see a near capacity crowd enjoying such a great occasion.
As Ryan Lowe was gracious enough to acknowledge, Charlton were the better side and well deserving of their win (Lee Johnson take note). A fine first half where we came out of the blocks really quickly and got Plymouth firmly on the back foot. We pressed effectively as a team and had the upper hand, with DJ leading Plymouth’s left back a merry dance. He put over several inviting crosses but, without Stockley to contend with, their central defenders handled them well.
We started the second half quickly although, just as Plymouth seemed to be getting a foothold in the game, Ben Purrington popped up with a fine finish.
As the game wore on, we sat a little deeper, kept our shape, defended well and looked to spring Plymouth on the counter. The tactics were spot on. We never looked in any real trouble defensively and created a number of chances on the break, with Washington finally converting one after a lovely through ball from Lee dissected the defence. We could easily have had a third and saw the game out comfortably, including the 6 additional minutes which the officials somehow found from somewhere.
We defended very well throughout, with Clare, Pearce and Famewo all very impressive. The midfield trio played extremely well and, offensively, DJ had an absolutely outstanding first half. Davison and Washington worked very hard without getting too much joy until the game opened up in the second half and Conor finished well. It was good to see Mason Burstow getting a taste of the action, as we’ll certainly be needing him over the next few weeks.
A big week ahead and we have to hope that Pearcey’s injury isn’t too bad, as we’re fast running out of central defenders. We could also do without Akin Famewo picking up a 5th yellow, failing which we’ll be left with a makeshift back line of Gunter and Elewere.
Another outstanding result and performance for Jacko and surely his permanent appointment will be confirmed over the next fortnight. An external appointment would represent a significant risk and would be deeply unpopular with all our supporters, given the extraordinary turnaround that Jacko has achieved. Nor can we afford to fanny around for too long, as discussions with potential January recruits (whether loanee’s or permanents) will very shortly be beginning in earnest. No clubs or players will take us seriously if the managerial position is still up in the air and we cannot afford a repetition of the late and unsatisfactory recruitment earlier this year.
Let’s hope we can push ourselves firmly into the top half of the table by the end of this year and position ourselves for a strong second half of the season.

They were on holiday for the first 12 games
I wouldn’t say they were cooked. Pressed less most definitely but Washington, Lee and Gilbey were making a nuisance of themselves, pressing and driving forwards right up to the 96th minute.
Absolutely gutted I wasn't there today as I tested positive for
Covid Really wanted to take my boy to a packed valley for once.
Brilliant performance by the boys today so nice to see a proper team
again. Coyr
Hope you've just got a mild case @Nicholas, and that there'll be another close to full house in the near future to take him to.
Thanks mate just ate a teaspoon of English mustard for the sake of it tasted nothing 🤦♂️

No we didn't, we made them look shit. If Stockley played yesterday, we win that by at least 4.

Then he needs to start behaving himself !!
We bumped into Stockley and Inniss at lunchtime before the game at a cafe in Sidcup. Both were more than happy we stopped for a chat and were very engaging, I can’t believe how well spoken Jayden is. Another guy sat in the corner listening to us quietly with the occasional interjection in the conversation. When we left all four of us looked at each other and questioned who the other guy was and then realised it was Adam Matthews. He must have felt left out as we discussed Ryan’s recovery progress and Jayden missing three games. Sorry Adam if you are reading this.
As for the game. The most happy I’ve felt leaving The Valley for many a year. All the players were immense but shout outs especially to both Clare and DJ, both playing out of position but playing themselves into a new one, Dobson, fast becoming my favourite current player, but my MOM was Famewo who was outstanding.
Comments
Argyle were way behind any of that.
Anyway, the only stat that ever mattered was Charlton 2 Argyle 0.
great to have a fuller ground, wasn’t the same as the semi but different occasion of course
Should Washington shoot from the right more often, he seems to fail from the left so glad hes starting to get in his groove
ps I’m starting to waver on when decisions should be made, that result should seal it really

And better than the Donny play-off semi in one aspect at least - we won the game!
