  • Really confused as to why Zak Crawley isn’t available, Dan Lawrence for Essex was in the same position and is playing today. Would have thought Zak would be chomping at a bit to play today. Strange decision
  • 46 mph winds forecast at Chelmsford for 11 o’clock and remaining above 40mph for most of the day.

I would imagine that he is trying to protect his England position such as it is. The less games facing the new red ball in optimum bowling conditions the better it is for him. Lawrence doesn't bat up top so has the luxury of someone else seeing off the new ball. Lawrence may also feel that he has to show decent form to secure that number 4 slot especially if Pope shows some early season form. Crawley may also want to have a week of training with RTD to iron out those technical issues.

Kent won the toss and elected to bowl. We've left out Stewart and Qadri from the 13 named - five seamers and DBD opening with Compton and Muyeye batting at 4

Apparently he’s been hitting runs in his last few games which has made Surrey think twice of the decision to let him leave, not entirely sure how many he has hit but it’s touch and go at the minute
Patel is opening for Surrey today, alongside Burns

On 40 off 39 balls, clearly just being linked with us, has transformed him as a player

Only just seen this. No chance were we gonna let him leave, behind the scenes they've earmarked him as the replacement for Stoneman at the top of the order since last season. Particularly with us unsure how much Burns is going to be available it would leave us with no openers at the club. Hes highly rated in white ball too after his season in the 50 over comp last year and he is expected to captain teh club in that format this year if the scumdred doesn't come calling. Cant believe there was ever any legs to this.

5 right arm seamers plus DBD making a 6th. Enough variety?

Not the greatest of first sessions to our season. Having put Essex in, they are 86-0 off 29 overs. Browne 48* (91) & Cook 29* (85).

Sadly, apart from the lack of a spinner, we don't have a red ball left arm seamer in the squad - Klaassen is away with the Netherlands and will only ever be used in white ball and the other seamers, namely Stewart, Podmore and Singh are all right handed. I don't know what it is about this country but the likes of Australia and Pakistan seem to produce countless left armers by comparison.

We’re at the game and Browne and Cook look untroubled.

Frozen, miserable and low on optimism.  It’s like watching Charlton.

    Perfect.

Can't someone on the farm call Cook away? Urgent lambing issues or problems with the tractor  ;)

210-0 off 80. New ball being taken. Here's hoping it's better for us than the old one. It can hardly be much worse!!!!

Bird with his two wickets today has taken almost as many as Miguel Cummins did in his whole spell with us last season. Cummins, incidentally, does not appear to have played a pro game anywhere since his final one for us last June. I think they call that "being Kentised".
