After the shaky first 15 we narrowed to 5/6 so had a nibble on that, so nice to start the weekend with a win and a win
  • I enjoyed that. The stand-out performances for me were DJ, Dobson and Lee but the ultimate performance has to be the Gateshead fans' rendition of 'Respect' by Erasure. I never thought I'd hear that as a football chant. Whatever next? 'Smalltown Boy'?

We are playing Cheltenham away on Jan 15th, so we will be drawn away to Cheltenham on the 8th. It won't be the featured game of the weekend.

I was a bit concerned by how easily they were able to create some very good opportunities as on another day we concede a couple there, but a win is a win and in all honesty we probably could have gone up a couple of gears if it came down to it.

Glad Elerewe put in a decent performance as he's been poor the last couple of times I've seen him.

Roll on the 3rd round. Hope we can go out in a blaze of glory

I know it’s all hypothetical, but I think we’d have lost that under Nige.
Definitely especially with the centre-back shortage. People slightly ignoring that when knocking the defence tonight.

Knocking a defence which had a shut out. It may have been last ditch, it may have been physical, but it was effective.
    Love the desire and commitment.
Big respect for the fans that taught them that desire and commitment by being there on a Friday night.

A major factor was surely poor finishing by the Gateshead forwards, especially Campbell

Then a couple of decent saves by Hendo

Generous to credit the defence for that

    PWR.

A hiding to nothing match for us which we completed in a professional fashion. Credit to Jacko. I am normally bricking it during these kind of matches fearing the worst (Northwich Victoria) but despite Gateshead creating a number of decent chances for themselves I never felt any apprehension that we would lose.

Likely to be an away at Huddersfield or equivalent in the 3rd round but you never know.

Important now to recover well and go out and get 3 points against Ipswich on Tuesday.

    Jacko deserves the job.

Jacko said the same as my thoughts.
All that mattered was winning the game without injuries.
    Mission accomplished comfortably.

But isnt the goalkeeper part of the defence?

One could argue that being made to rush results in poor finishing. A goalkeeper is an instrumental part of the defence and I expect GK to make saves.
If the defence concede goals we are all quick to identify what they do wrong. If they don’t concede surely we have to give them some credit as opposed to giving the credit to poor finishing from the opposition.
The improvement under JJ cannot be put down to poor opposition, especially given our appalling lack of fit centre halves.
I would humbly suggest that it is not me that is being generous.

Think we were a bit lucky today, and it was worrying how many chances Gateshead created. Apart from that, job done.
Obviously Millwall away for me (always good to tick a new ground off the list) and then Liverpool away after that.

PS I think we could still improve our running when we have the ball. Too few options for the man in possession.

Not very convincing, was it? If Gateshead could shoot the result would have been very different. We could use some of their speed up front too, had us beaten whenever there was a chase for the ball. Always good to win, but we were lucky. Thought the ref was better than we see in the league.

Bit of an odd one wasn't it. I felt we were the better team but they had the better chances. As I'm kept on being reminded on here.....lower league strikes are lower league for a reason. Replay that game & put Arsenal in Red and us in the other kit. Washington skies one over when through & Morgan misses one straight after the restart. The team in red are more clinical without pulling up daisies. Keeper makes a couple of good saves & team not in red also hit the bar. Plucky underdogs but that's cup football.

Only troubling thing for me is Deji being caught out a few times by the ball over the top / down the side. He's strong & has great distribution but doesn't have the pace of a Gomez or Rufus. But he's young & currently all we have at centre half. Also prefer him to Pearce.

On the positive side. Leko looked sharp when he came on & I thought Dobson and Lee had good games. Great run from Washington for the opener (hands up all those who thought he was offside..✋) and I'm giving the 2nd to Purrington (I thought if a shot was on target then a deflection didn't count).

All in all job done. Dont really care who we get in the 3rd round except not another league 1 side.

I know it's hypothetical, but we'd have lost to H&W under Nige, so we wouldn't be playing this match...........
  • Ben Pure-ring-tongue ………….purrrrrington you cnuts

result all important and of course a few changes but the last two league and this  cup game scares me , we’ve gone to the level of oppo and Looked shit
I need a convincing performance against Ipswich to change my current view because for now this is looking like a dead waste of a season .

I’m in the Huddersfield away cup draw camp …. So both sets of fans can complain they couldn’t get a duller draw .

full respect to the travelling Addicks -tips hat 🎩
  • I think last night showed the strength of the English football pyramid. Gateshead played decent football and Stockport should have got a result against Rotherham.

Plenty of half decent sides in tier 5/6.

The amount of Charlton fans just wearing a jumper was quite impressive.

I have said I suspected it before but you could see last night that Watson is definitely playing a part, advisory at least, in the set up. Great on JJ to use the experience around him IMO.

I thought above all else last night was a great game in Deji's education. We definitely seem to have a bit of a player there. The sharks will be circling.
  • This was a good test for Deji, they had some quick forwards, and I thought he got stronger as the game wore on.Non league football has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 10-20 years.I saw pre season game against Darford and was very impressed with the way they played their football, same tonight. No more just hoofing it up in the air, these guys can play.We have a thin squad defensively,so not sure if a long cup run will do us any favours, but I suppose we should enjoy the moment after years of going out early.
  • Crewe away will be rearranged I guess as it clashes with the FA cup 3rd round, once the cup draw is made on Monday night, will the rearranged Crewe match be announced next week?
