We mentioned on commentary about positive financial impact on Gateshead. But let’s not forget that we got £60,000 TV £25000 Prize an I would guess £15,000 gate money. These days £100,000 is a significant sum for us. Just shows making the effort can pay off…..
More articulate in that than he was last night. Is it asking too much for him to do a bit of research before the game instead of just pitching up cold and spouting drivel?
Seems he’s seen the stick he’s getting and explained himself well, think that’s fair enough and quite modest. Don’t have to apologies though we’re not that sensitive 😂
We were fortunate not to concede a goal that would have totally changed the complexion of the game but we controlled the second half well and deserved the win. My main concern is just how vulnerable we looked to balls played through and behind our defence. And that wouldn't have been resolved through the presence of Innis, Pearce or Lavelle, none of whom can turn rapidly or are particularly quick. Any League One opposition managers or scouts will have clocked that one.
I'd gamble that we'd set up to take it easy. We never really got out of second gear. We never looked worried. The only position I was concerned for was the defence and Gateshead exposed their lack of pace multiple times, but our keeper was more than equal to the best they had.
Our best players were Henderson and Stockley, with no one else really doing much worth talking about.
I'd say we were set up to contain them and quickly strike on the counter - Jacko has been saying he'd done his homework and knew Gateshead would start brightly and carry the game to us.
Gateshead were always going to give it a go and unsettle us. It wasn't our Cup Final, but it was Gateshead's. And they played like it, as you would expect.
It made sense with Ipswich on Tuesday to just get the job done last night. No injuries and a win ! What's not to like ? The other great point is that the loan players played which hopefully means their clubs are not planning on recalling them in January
Err - I thought Gateshead did a very decent job for a full time non league outfit but the game was done after an hour.
I know it is a sacrilegious thought but opposing sides are allowed to have goal scoring opportunities. Notably so when their League 1 opposition are without 4 first choice defenders. Inniss, Lavelle, Pearce, Matthews were all missing.
It is called context. It was not about pace. It was about reading the game and adjusting.
As it happens I thought it was a terrific learning experience for Elerewe. He had his challenges but won through. Gateshead did a good job in targeting and isolating him. It is not rocket science. To stop the 1v1s there were 2 options.
1. Start Dobson deeper. He was too often caught in no mans land. Once you shut down the early 1 v 1 you can still step out to close down the space in front of the back 4. 2. Preferably Clare develops his understanding of the RCB role. In a back 3 he needed to work centrally in dropping alongside Elerewe with Jaiyesimi starting deeper to cover any wide left attacking threat. As with Dobson once you have deterred the early 1 v 1 you then step out to play your normal game.
While neither Clare or Jaiyesimi played badly neither adjusted positionally to provide the cover Elerewe needed. They are both new to their current roles.
Gateshead not so much passed through the Press they simply ignored/ exploited it. They had 2 half chances in the first 10 minutes, one counter breakaway chance 7 yards out when Clare was out of position, while a 2nd chance was created by poor central defending by Elerewe - he was outmuscled and the ball dropped/ was fed to Campbell.
The first minute 2nd half chance was poor concentration by everyone where Henderson also made a meal of saving a decent strike. Washington then mishit his shot 6yds out before we clinched a second from whereon the game was mostly done because Gateshead then had to chase the game.
Yes Gateshead had another pressurised miss on circa 75 minutes where Elerewe was again left 1v1 and there was last minute goal mouth scramble.
Gateshead in many ways delivered a classic non league set up with invariably 8 or even 9 players behind the ball to then break quickly. For us with a midfield built around a strong running modus operandi there was bugger all space to run into.
Shock horror - opposing coach uses tactics to test our defensive inexperience and negate our strengths - who’d have thought it?
In the end we overcame the challenges, largely controlled the 2nd half and the job was done.
Elerewe was a real plus. Gilbey and Lee struggled with the midfield congestion while Jayiesimi, Purrington were both wasteful leaving Dobson with nowhere to go. Our delivery in the final third was not good.
We had 20 opportunities in and around their penalty area and even allowing for their defensive intensity our crossing and targeted passing was simply not clinical enough.
Due credit to Gateshead for closing down the spaces.
Morecombe and Shrewsbury, without the intensity of a cup match, largely did the same.
It was always going to be the challenge when opposition coaches started to study the tapes. We don’t yet have the bodies at the moment to freshen up/ modify the 3-5-2 press template.
Can players continue to develop and grow within the system? You would certainly hope so. Equally one or two injured players returning and one or two additions would give Jackson the options he needs.
I feel so much second hand embarrassment looking at that Beckford video. I didn't hate his commentary, it wasn't brilliant but then hardly any commentary ever is and at least he was enthusiastic. The absolute vitriol he got for not blowing smoke up the arse of a third division club though was insane online. You'd think he'd been singing Gateshead songs and cheering when our players fell over. Imagine being so precious about football commentary that you abuse someone enough that he feels he has to make a Twitter apology because he's excited about a non-league team winning a football match. The research is never great on these things, and if we draw Man Utd away fans will still complain that the coverage focuses on them too much and they got Purrington's shoe size wrong. I'm just glad I got to watch the game on TV
Quite rightly every non Charltonian should’ve been rooting for Gateshead. I was hoping and expecting a more biased load of talk during the match, but it didn’t feel too bad to me. Get in, win, get out.

Our defence played a very high line. It pushes us up the park and compacts our midfield. Although that always give the possibilty of a ball over the top exploiting the space behind. As we saw last night with Gateshead's gameplan.
We even did it to them with Washington's superbly timed run and cross for our 1st goal.
Oh piss off Jermaine, shouldnt have to apologise for something like that
It was the least bad bit about the commentary.
Absolutely, everyone knows that in any competition the neutral fan will nearly always root for the underdog.
The FA Cup even more so.
He is not a neutral fan, he is co commentator. If he wants to make a career in the role he will have to work harder on the balance, and more importantly show he can bring an insight from a professional footballers experience. I don’t think he did that and I think he now understands why. That said, it is a highlight in their players careers, their families, and most of all, their fans. I don’t think anyone begrudges them a bit of bias in the commentary.

We were fortunate as you say, but I think you’re perhaps wrong with the issue not being resolved with a back 3 of Lavelle, Innis and Famewo as I think their positioning and knowledge of the role counts for so much. Remember we were playing with a central midfielder and a raw 18 year old in the role.
Full respect to Gateshead though. Williamson has got them playing excellent football and I look forward to seeing how they do in the rest of the campaign.
All this does is highlight how fucking pathetic our fanbase can be. Part of the magic of the tournament is non league giant killers, so no wonder he was more biased towards them in his comms.
A lot of people critical of our performance, fair enough. But where's the credit due ..... for example our superbly worked 1st goal?
Washington timed his run to perfection, taking the ball to the byeline - and his chip across the face of the goalmouth was meat & gravy for the onrushing Stockley. But just as importantly, the 2 defenders trying to challenge Stockley are on a hiding to nothing, rushing in facing the wrongway.
If they had got to the ball before Stockley, it would almost certainly have been an own goal. That Washo cross from the byeline was a defender's nightmare. Impossible to defend.
Hopefully, a couple more quid in the January budget to sign that needed striker.
Burstow cramped up badly after just an hour last Tuesday against Villa U21s - and subbed. I'd wager the Meds team told Jacko he was not to be risked so soon - especially if he's to be needed on the bench v Ipswich next Tuesday.
Bit of an odd one wasn't it. I felt we were the better team but they had the better chances. As I'm kept on being reminded on here.....lower league strikes are lower league for a reason. Replay that game & put Arsenal in Red and us in the other kit. Washington skies one over when through & Morgan misses one straight after the restart. The team in red are more clinical without pulling up daisies. Keeper makes a couple of good saves & team not in red also hit the bar. Plucky underdogs but that's cup football.
Only troubling thing for me is Deji being caught out a few times by the ball over the top / down the side. He's strong & has great distribution but doesn't have the pace of a Gomez or Rufus. But he's young & currently all we have at centre half. Also prefer him to Pearce.
On the positive side. Leko looked sharp when he came on & I thought Dobson and Lee had good games. Great run from Washington for the opener (hands up all those who thought he was offside..✋) and I'm giving the 2nd to Purrington (I thought if a shot was on target then a deflection didn't count).
All in all job done. Dont really care who we get in the 3rd round except not another league 1 side.
Agree with most of that Golfie.
(Which, to be honest, is now worrying the life out of me. Nurse!) ;-)
