  • Not pretty, but not all bad. Did what we had to do. We were the better side, by a small margin, and we got a win. As ever, I was impressed with Dobson. Henderson made some great saves, but was very cavalier where he let the ball land. Great to see Stockley back. Leko had a decent late cameo.

Was getting a tad annoyed with Beckford, but he redeemed himself with the 'took him on a tour of Gateshead' comment.

Up until that last triple scramble Gateshead barely got across the half way line in the second half. In the first half we let them have too much space on the wings. But second half we stopped that and bossed the midfield. I have rarely felt so relaxed in a game after our second went in.
Our two main problems were clear tho. We need another proper experienced centre half in 4 weeks time to make up for the crocked ones. And we need another striker as we rarely look like scoring from shots inside the box, tonight's was a deflection.
Gateshead should have scored in the first minute of the second half. And our second goal was offside!
  • Is it just me or does Graham Stuart look like he should be behind the bar at the Nags Head?
Many years ago, I bought him a drink in La Rascasse in Beckenham.
    He didn't reciprocate.
  • The good points. We won. Err, that’s about it. A more clinical Gateshead would have scored four or five. We looked pretty poor for most of the game. A harrowing experience listening to Matterwank and Anthony Joshua. Shows that there’s not a great deal between the better sides in the various leagues sides when you get below championship level. A banana skin avoided but not a particularly encouraging couple of hours.

May I just mention we are Cafc, league1(div.3), not CAFC premier league anymore,we were being set up for a big kick in the nuts tonight, the pre match, the commentary and even after apparently it was them that missed chances. We did a good enough job away at a shithole to get into the next round. Even some comments here are throwing in negatives over the positives. We as a fan base really do need to be realistic about where we are as a club and stop expecting premier league quality in league 1, just support our famous club instead of putting the boot in and enjoy as much as we can. I do get a bit cheesed off when people write, we won and then highlight the negatives. Anyway we’re through and and it’s pleasing to be able to either hope for a big team at home, or a small one to get through to round 4!!. What would be best?
I'd love us to go Spurs - 12,000 allocation I would think

    Well said 100% this.

On the last point I would rather a small team next and hopefully progress up the prise money ladder. I dont think I would enjoy watching us play a top Premiership team at the moment and that isnt being negative it's just a realistic view of the outcome 🙄

    That's balanced analysis surely.

Or are you sort of person who slags the team off when we lose, even if we played well and were unlucky?

Yeah, I’d agree,I’d rather progress especially with our cup record, seen us get stuffed a bit too often recently!! 🤣

I'd gamble that we'd set up to take it easy. We never really got out of second gear. We never looked worried. The only position I was concerned for was the defence and Gateshead exposed their lack of pace multiple times, but our keeper was more than equal to the best they had.

Our best players were Henderson and Stockley, with no one else really doing much worth talking about.
  • FACup always susceptible to a shock. Live on ITV. Job done. Didn't think we were bad at all. Look forward to a decent draw for once. Ipswich next. Need a decent performance and result after the last two league results.
  • Thought Hendo parried a few saves that he could have held but maybe I’m being critical, we done the job, could have been a banana skin but our class showed in the end
  • Think a replay would have been fair on Gateshead, we were poor but was always gonna be a tough game.
  • Posting without reading. My summary:

    - terrible ground to watch football, glad I didn’t trek up there
    - Gateshead were good, I was pretty uneasy all first half
    - not a great showing from us at all but hopeful of a much better showing in different circumstances on Tuesday
    - not really seen the hype about elerewe yet, thought he looked shaky/ vulnerable but lots of time to improve
    - would like Villa Park, Goodison or St James park in rnd 3
    - Jermaine beckford is an awful co commentator

  • Enjoyed that and nice to see the team on proper telly even if the commentary was shite. Come back Tel, Greg snd Brownie!

Some good performances out there from us, in the end we were too good for them. Sure they had chances but because they are National League players, they couldn’t take them. Well played young Deji, he did well tonight and showed enough to get a chance in the league. Still not really sure why Ben P loses that goal - would it have been an og had it glanced in off a defender? Still, they all count.

Absolutely not, I call it as I see it, I know we can’t win every game and we don’t which I accept. If the team show pride and give 100% I’ll support all the way, which I do. In these apparent balanced analysis the positives are generally brushed over.

    All Gateshead on the highli
  • It's worrying that the old chip over the top kept finding us caught out. We were lucky they couldn't shoot straight.
  • I know it’s all hypothetical, but I think we’d have lost that under Nige.
Definitely especially with the centre-back shortage. People slightly ignoring that when knocking the defence tonight.

This a football forum for fans to express their views. Are we all meant to just say yay we won and be happy? It’s fair constructive criticism and I’m sure Jackson isn’t happy with how many chances we gave up tonight, in fact you could tell from his interview he wasn’t. We should always be looking at ways to improve.
And expressing my view is what I’m doing, would you rather play well and lose, or average at best and win?, With due respect JJ is not going to read or listen to any constructive criticism on here. All those chances created by them resulted in a 2-0 win for us. Games aren’t won by what could have happened. If we’d have missed our chances and lost, would you say we were unlucky?, I doubt it. As for wanting to improve, absolutely we should and I’d suggest we have and are, let’s not forget the stuff we have seen at the start of this season.
  • Well it's a good job that Gateshead didn't have their shooting boots on, or we could easily have lost that, given the number of good chances we let them have. Really going to need to do a lot better defensively against Ipswich on Tuesday.

Well I thought it was pretty poor. We were playing the league equivalent of Welling & Dartford and they had a good 5 or 6 chances that could easily have been goals. How we kept a clean sheet I don’t know and Henderson was clearly our man of the match. We had more control of the game second half as Gateshead ran out of steam, but even then they still carved out clear cut chances.

But none the less we are through, we get the rare excitement of the 3rd round draw and a long shit journey home for the camp has been avoided. We need to be better than that in the league games coming up though.
Non league has changed quite a bit. They are not part time postman anymore, they are full time professional footballers. They had pace up front and these players will be picked up by league 1 and  2 clubs in all probability. They are not mugs.

As with all leagues though, putting the ball in the net is what counts. They didn’t, which is why they are playing at that level and we won.

The same is highly likely to happen to us as bigger clubs join the competition. Good result and we move on to Tuesday.
    Spot on.
