It’s difficult to make a direct comparison, ITV V Charlton TV, as Scott Minto is talking to the converted but what is not in dispute is he is a true pro & does his homework. Stewart & Waddle talked Twaddle, had little insight & it was pub talk generalizations which they spouted at will. Give me Greg and Tel any time - they do their homework on the opposition, read the game well and shock horror name opposition players as they pass and aren't trying to BS the viewer. Brownie, does a good job of giving an X Players insights on the match. His years working for BBC Radio London have honed him into a class act. Yes he talks to much but I would listen to him any day over most co-commentators. It’s refreshing that he is also game to having the p**s taken out of himself. Last night Beckford, like an actor on the first night who hadn't learned his lines bombed, was it lack of prep or inexperienced or both? My hunch is the studio director was in his ear from the off, telling him to big up Gateshead, cliche small club v big club story blah blah blah. Trouble is commentators are like live news reporters , one take wonders, Beckford just blurted out his commentary, no take two or take three and no editing. It must have felt very lonely on the gantry looking down across the athletics track with his ears burning as studio director & producer were probably trying to steer the commentary. It was a big mistake for Beckford to post an apology I hope no one at ITV advised him to do this - he’s just amplified his lack of experience and added to what for him was a miserable night, hope he can move on and learn from this. A big shout out to the Hardy 400 who made the Gateshead pilgrimage trust a good night on the toon was had by all.
I feel so much second hand embarrassment looking at that Beckford video. I didn't hate his commentary, it wasn't brilliant but then hardly any commentary ever is and at least he was enthusiastic. The absolute vitriol he got for not blowing smoke up the arse of a third division club though was insane online. You'd think he'd been singing Gateshead songs and cheering when our players fell over. Imagine being so precious about football commentary that you abuse someone enough that he feels he has to make a Twitter apology because he's excited about a non-league team winning a football match. The research is never great on these things, and if we draw Man Utd away fans will still complain that the coverage focuses on them too much and they got Purrington's shoe size wrong. I'm just glad I got to watch the game on TV
Seems he’s seen the stick he’s getting and explained himself well, think that’s fair enough and quite modest. Don’t have to apologies though we’re not that sensitive 😂
All this does is highlight how fucking pathetic our fanbase can be. Part of the magic of the tournament is non league giant killers, so no wonder he was more biased towards them in his comms.
Actually I think what this highlights is just how pathetically sensitive lots of things are now.
Havent seen any comments aimed at him other than in our own match thread, but i can guess that some people will have gone OTT. But does it really need a two minute apology video? I mean, really?
The guy just can't win, can he? All that abuse and he responds. What the hell do you want?
@Grapevine49 used the word “context” in his analysis of last night’s performance. Today’s results give a wider context:
Lincoln: OUT. Beaten at home by Hartlepool even better… Portsmouth OUT , beaten at home in the 9th minute of injury time by Harrogate Ipswich, held to a 0-0 draw at home by Barrow, good luck with the replay if you can actually get there…all this despite being managed by Paul Cook.
I trust Thomas has already taken on board this wider context….
An awful lot of ex players are poor pundits - the majority of them simply aren't up to it. What annoys me the most is how lazy a lot of them are in terms of basic preparation.

The fact that he didn’t know Euell was assistant coach said it all for me. I could have done a better job than him.
good work out that also exposed weaknesses in our central defence .. hopefully this will be rectified next month as the injured will not be back in time to aid the promotion push
Adam Virgo is the best Co commentator as he does his homework and has been summarising on the lower leagues including National League/conference for the last decade.
Yet again today*, he comments only when necessary and knows how to dovetail with the main commentator.

I don't know if there's anything in this, but it seems to me that defenders tend to make better pundits than forwards. A naturally gifted striker like Beckford might not have had to give too much much thought to organisation and tactics, their role was rather more je ne sais quoi. For defenders though, other than bravery and brute force a major part of their job is reading the game always looking for problems.
Gateshead fan in peace, thanks for the great game and attention the game brought for us, as well as some much needed money for our fan owned club. We've got a good little team and will probably finish in the top 3 this season. Just found out that your all time record appearance player- Sam Bartram 1934-1956 559 App was from Gateshead (Jarrow small town within Gateshead borough). Quite an interesting link between our area and yourselves that many missed.
I am not going overboard on the performance. We avoided a potential banana skin and a cup shock. Get in, win nd get out again. As for the commentary that was a different story. I missed the first 7 mins as I am recovering from illness and was tired with a headache. We had possession but we couldn't create chances in the first 5 mins of me waking up. We were going on the attack and (he wound me up by saying things like Gateshead were on top? By then I had seen 5 mins when we had most of the ball, then he started pratley going on as though Gateshead were Brazil and Charlton were Premier League and then spent 99% time talking about how good Gateshead were, There was no commentary on the game from him, A few examples were when Stockley got fouled twice, and as he was so busy speaking about a completely different game to what I was watching he kept saying "oh I don't know what was happened there".... then stated the bleeding obvious "oh he is rubbing his hip there, He must have hurt his hip. I don't know how". Annoyed me with how he was saying about "purrington", mentioned about "Elliot Lee being a Charlton fan as he used to watch his Dad play. WTF? He was born after. Between them mentioned about TS playing his guitar on the halfway line.... and what song did he play?".. Lovely research.... "I was expecting him to say at leat "Mull of Kintyre or something". I don't ex[ect him to know about Charlton through and through but at least get your facts right. We don't do cups, know something about the team, comment on the game in hand, I don't mind biasness towards the underdog. As someone said, if the foot was on the other foot, 99% of us would support the underdog, but it was terrible. Anyway, he has co

I've seen worse teams than Gateshead at The Valley this season (including us before Jacko took over). I think if your strikers had had a bit more composure we might have been looking at an upset. Good luck for the rest of the season and glad you've put your ownership troubles behind you.

All the best for the season … I was impressed with your approach to the game

Really impressed with the football you played and you have some real pace up front.
Nice to see a fan owned club doing so well and I hope you get promotion this season.
Just a couple of lingering thoughts from Friday: 1) Hendo is still a good shot stopper. And he always was. His issues with us the first time around were fitness, distribution, and coming for crosses (something he never did). Given that McG doesn't come for crossed but is also a good shot stopper, a lot comes down to distribution. McG's isn't bad but isn't great. Hendo's looked alright but not great. It wouldn't necessarily surprise me if at some point this season there's a battle for the #1. If nothing else, depth is a good problem to have.
2) Deji both showed why he has so much promise, but also showed how raw he is. He did alright all things considered in the end. But I suspect he's going to need a loan playing regular men's football to further his development. You can see why Gunter has been picked ahead of him in the league. You can also see that Deji has the tools to be a really good defender as he ages.
3) We really got undone quite easily at the back. Runs from midfield and runs beyond by their forwards seemed to really catch us off guard. It seems like it's been an issue for ages, certainly was under Bow. A better side puts 3-4 past us and we can't really complain.
4) This wasn't a great performance but the job was done. Despite the fact that it left me slightly worried for our season going forward, how we read and react to this tie really has all to do with Ipswich and Cambridge and nothing to do with this match itself. These matches are a hiding to nothing. But if we show some of the same weaknesses in the league that we showed on Friday, then there's cause for some concern.
5) Maybe Thomas was a little more savvy than we gave him credit for in waiting to appoint Jacko full time. 4-6 points from our next two games should see Jacko get the job. Maybe even 3 points. But anything less and it will come down to how we play. The honeymoon period is over. Teams have seen how we play under Jacko and had time to adjust. And now Jacko and Co have to, in turn, adjust. The ability to adjust is what makes good and long serving managers in this game. I think it's good precedent that Jacko has made some good halftime adjustments so far. But how we do over the next week will be a really good indicator of Jackson as a manager.

Sam Matterface knew it, but chose to run with the Elliott Lee watched Newcastle before he was born angle
best of luck for the rest of the season and good luck on the promotion hunt

Yep, @Heedfan you played well, and it was a good job for us your forwards didn't really have their shooting boots on. Our Club Museum is sponsoring the stand at Boldon CAFC, the club that Sam Bartram and Jack Shreeve (goalie and left back respectively when we won the FA cup in 1947) started their careers at.

Both Beckford and Matterface were piss poor and need to watch the Man Utd game from Thursday night on how to commentate on a game. Drury and McCoist are the masters at it.
Amazon seem to have hit a sweet spot with commentary, actually a bit of a shame they only have 2 rounds of games a season

Does new caretaker manager bounce beat Long caretaker manager on Tuesday ?
l couldn’t give a shit, I watch more than I listen. But Christ it must have been shit if he’s apologising for it.
