All this does is highlight how fucking pathetic our fanbase can be. Part of the magic of the tournament is non league giant killers, so no wonder he was more biased towards them in his comms.
Actually I think what this highlights is just how pathetically sensitive lots of things are now.
Havent seen any comments aimed at him other than in our own match thread, but i can guess that some people will have gone OTT. But does it really need a two minute apology video? I mean, really?
Thinking back to previous FA cup defeats to lower league opposition like Leicester, Walsall and the draw v non-league Dagenham I'm more than happy with winning two nil and they had a few chances.
Solid enough performance and we were the better side.
Beckford got it wrong with his "Gateshead are well on top" after two minutes and "Dobson isn't dominating the game" after seven minutes. Of course the story is Gateshead not us but it wasn't good commentary. Brave to come on and post what he did and all credit to him. The twitter thread replies are funny with at least one CAFC saying abuse is wrong after calling him a bell end during the game.

So many knobends on Charlton Twitter, blocks and mutes are key
With commentary, mostly less is more. Maybe ITV producer directed Beckford to talk up Gateshead to make the game more exciting and talk up prospect of giant killing. Commentary is an art. He has enthusiasm for the game, just needs to tone it down a bit and not feel that he has talk about everything that is in his head.
The reason the game was televised was because there was a potential shock. I have no problem with that and any bias towards Gateshead in the commentary. It wasn't over the top and good luck to them, it was their moment in the spotlight.

About where I am.
Beckford was clearly gunning for an upset, and exaggerated how much they were actually in the game, example as someone said, the fact he claimed they were dominating after 60 seconds. But all that said I couldn’t give a shit really.
Gateshead's forward line were very quick, and thankfully for Cafc their composure in front of goals was lacking on the night.
Big shout out to JJ who realized he had to play a strong team. Hendo may have been the only player who wouldn't have played if League match and he was probably MOM. We would probably have lost that under Bowyer and Adkins who would have picked weaker sides.
Great experience for Deji to play in a cup tie away from home and on TV. I thought he did well and pleased the ref who was good all night spotted the gamesmanship of the forward in trying to make it look like he was failed when he went down holding Deji arm in 1st half.
Sean Clare and his pace stopped Elerewe being sent off in 2nd half by getting back quickly to be alongside when Deji fouled the forward and saved the walk of Shame and a one match ban when we are so short of fit CB.
A bit chilly last night mate? @clb74, @Covered End and myself were thinking of you last night whilst we were in the warmth of The Bricklayers in Bromley.
Beckford seems a nice chap, the hate towards him last night was bizarre. Co commentator in supporting the underdog shocker - non story
You have to expect any TV coverage to be on the side of the underdog because that's the beauty of the FA Cup after all. Putting that whole issue completely aside, Beckford was still awful last night.

This is a bit post apology. Describing general level critical of critical comments as hate is overstating it. Beckford's commentary was irksome, and mostly myopic. Also, talked (drivel) incessantly. I turned down the volume on the commentary and it was better. Beckford deserved the critical comments at the time. Hopefully Beckford will learn and be a bit more balanced & his commentary will improve. ITV production direction probably had a hand it in. Like everyone is saying, you expect that to a degree with non league underdogs on a live commentary. Everyone will have forgotten about it by tomorrow.
Have to say that I criticised Beckford on the match thread. However having just seen his video this morning, hats off to him! In return I apologise for being critical it was me being over sensitive. Mind you the main commentator I thought was awful!
As for ITV, the bias is understandable. Gateshead were the story. But there were basic errors, which are less defensible at ITV’s level.
“Is that Jason Euell,” asked Beckford at one point.
Clearly, he had no idea Euell was part of the Charlton coaching set-up. I’d have thought it was basic preparation for the match.
I agree with this, but I think Matterface deserves a bit more criticism than Beckford, personally.
He’s supposed to be the experienced professional, but he clearly didn’t have enough knowledge of the teams on whom he was commentating either.
He was clearly blagging it, trying to sound authoritative on details he’d obviously heard second hand and incomplete. There was a great example of this when he was talking about Thomas Sandgaard playing guitar - he was saying things like, “he’s played on the pitch at the Valley - he’s a pretty decent guitarist actually” as if he was there.
Amusingly, it was Beckford who exposed the bullshit by asking “what did he play?” And Matterface blatantly had no idea: “A rock tune” or something similar was his response. Idiot. 🙄
Embarrassing all round - "I want to see Dobson getting more involved and seeing him spray passes around like we're used to week in, week out" said Beckford the Charlton season ticket holder.
Everything's been said above, both commentators were awful and literally blagging it re players and history, so much verbal diarrhoea.
Yes Beckford was ridiculous in his bias in the first five minutes or so (certainly didn't warrant an apology ffs), but it was more that they were both excruciatingly awful commentators.

Sam Matterface, for some bizarre reason, thinks the route to being a great commentator is to mimic the indulgent, smug, self-important, painfully unfunny, desperate-to-be-liked, cheesy, ignorant commentary style of Clive Tyldesley. The irony is that, by doing this, he might just be able to achieve something I never thought possible - become a worse commentator than Clive Tyldesley.
Whilst not loving the commentary last night I didn't really dislike Beckford either. Thought he was upbeat and that he was enjoying the game. Slight bias towards Gateshead, just like, probably, 100% of the neutrals watching. Can't understand why people would post abuse towards him. Now, Matterface......that's a different story.
Just seen a fan has put in an official complaint to ITV over the commentary last night. Add that to the long long list of people demanding apologies and just generally moaning.
Can't take the piss out of any fanbase when we have people like that among us. Palace behaviour.
Comments
Hopefully he can improve his commentary because you cant deny his passion for the game.

Jieassimi, who’s that?

Idiot. 🙄
Robert Lee left us in 1992. Elliot was born in 94.
