Can't read the article behind a paywall but the headline is not at all promising.
  • Very disappointed and completely baffled by this

Maybe Charlton Women would’ve been better off without his involvement

All a bit weird. Just, why?

Surely you’d gauge their opinion if it’s even necessary.

Can this be raised at the Fans Forum this week? As a really really bad idea

Other than people telling you it's bad, why is the term "ladies" now seen as bad?

I've always been confused about this and no one has ever given a clear answer, Google included.
  • Ladies scans better than women for the next song lolz

Good grief. Just as well he won't be up to speed on ancient English slang. He'd probably have opted for Charlton Sorts.

For my part, I'm not bothered whether a sports team styles itself ladies or women.  There are more important battles.

What does exercise me is that any man - even the owner - feels he has the right to change the name against the clearly expressed view of the women players in the team.

If this report is accurate, it's time to wind your neck in, Thomas, and get that ego of yours under control!
  • Massive fan of Sandgaard and everything be has done but think he is shooting himself in the foot with this.

It is clear from that report that there is staunch opposition for it internally which means surely you would just quietly drop it before letting it get to the point that it's getting leaked to the national media. The club feels in a positive place at the moment in terms of the great work JJ has been doing and the recent stadium initiatives (An idea Sandgaard deserves huge credit for) so why risk that all for the sake of a name change that doesn't appear to be pleasing anyone?

Players don't appear to like it and you can bet that sponsors will be pulling away if they get even the faintest hint that there may be controversy attached to this name change.

I'm not saying it is anywhere near the same situation but I lived near Hull at the time their owner proposed changing their name to Tigers and his absolute insistence on following that through until he was formally stopped by the FA ruined his relationship with fans and that relationship is still broken to this day.

Really hope this is quickly reversed.
  • Leaving aside the debate about whether it's right or wrong from a terminology and diversity perspective, I just can't work out why a guy seeking to be popular and successful wants to make a decision to change something with universal opposition. It feels like a totally needless conflict and a distraction from the real challenges.

Someone in that board room needs to be able to stand up in the meeting and just say no.
  • I mean, is it that hard to ask what they want?
He doesn’t care clearly. Does what he wants.

Can't read the article behind a paywall but the headline is not at all promising.

Charlton Women are set to rebrand as ‘Charlton Ladies’ in a shock decision that its players have labelled “insulting.”

The move to drop the moniker ‘women’ in favour of ‘ladies’ is understood to have been driven by Charlton’s owner, Thomas Sandgaard, the Danish-American businessman who agreed to a historic takeover of the women’s side in February this year.

A senior source at the club said the decision has sparked outrage among players, who branded the move “insulting” and “derogatory” in a club meeting with Sandgaard last Friday.

Karen Hills, who took over the championship side earlier this year and enjoyed a successful playing career with the Addicks between 2001 and 2007, is also said to be staunchly opposed to the idea.

Such are the players’ frustrations that they have reportedly drafted a letter to the Professional Footballers’ Association in a last-ditch attempt to block the name change, although Charlton have already listed the women’s team as the ‘Ladies’ Team’ on its official club website

  • Only thing I can think of is the fact that Sandgaard has tweeted a few times saying: "Congratulations Ladies" when they've won - Does he find the terminology of the word "women" wrong? - Would hope Doctor Raelynn Maloney would have been able to advise.

Just hope that the internal meeting went well enough on Friday to calm everyone down, and that this article isn't a stronger push from whoever felt that they werent listened to during that meeting so feel further pushback is required.

Is there a mens team called the guys or blokes team?

Men's teams and Women's teams helps the argument of equality.

I believe it's the implication of the word that evokes an image of well-mannered, do as your told, demur 'ladies' of decades gone by. We are not in that time anymore and the women should be able to decide for themselves what their team is called, rather than having "ladies" forced onto them by a middle aged man.
Thanks Callum - I did wonder if that was the case.

So are all the top sides called ‘ladies’

Im struggling to get my head wrapped around even the consideration to do this.

Wouldnt it be nice to just go a month without something fucking weird happening at this football club.

    But it's men's football not gentlemen's football.

All 12 teams in the Women's Super League use "women".

Can’t think of anyone in WSL or Championship that still uses Ladies
